description Using highly flexible glass fibers ipf fiber optic amplifiers constitute a functional unit that is capable of implementing through-beam and diffuse reflection sensors. Fiber optic amplifiers operate with modulated infrared light. The entire electronic package has been assembled in a robust aluminium diecast housing. The adaptation of the fiber optics is achieved via a knurled nut with M18x1 thread and a sealing ring. Using a potentiometer the sensing range and/or operating distance may be adjusted internally. The devices can be switched between pnp and npn. A selection can also be made between light-on and dark-on modes. description The use of fiber-optics in optical electronics is very useful. The ipf fiber glass system consists of a functional unit made of a flexible glass fiber optic cable and the optoelectronic amplifier. The exceptional advantages of glass fiber technology are used in connection with a series of high-grade amplifiers as versatile glass fiber through-beam sensors and glass fiber diffuse reflection sensors. ipf fiber optics consist of a bundle of individual glass fibers, each around 50µm thick. The respective fiber optic amplifiers transmit modulated IR light. This is conveyed through the fiber optic glass fibers according to the principle of total reflection. The individual glass fibers consist of core and cladding glass. The beam of light entering into the core is conducted through the glass fibers by means of reflection on the contact surfaces core/cladding (see respective illustration). ipf electronic gmbh

The sensing range “s” depends on the glass fiber diameter, the reflectivity (surface condition) of the object as well as the angle “α”.

description The devices in the OL15 series are designed for the highest levels of performance with small dimensions (miniature housing). Despite the compact design, the user benefits from robust, industrial strength devices with all protective functions. Fiber optics are fitted in front of the transmitter and receiver. They are the extended eye of the photosensor. As the fiber optics only have small dimensions and are flexible, scanning tasks in places which are difficult to access can be completed easily. In addition, no electrical voltage is transferred. description The OL10 series sets a new standard for optical sensors with fiber optics. The extended operating distance and sensing range resulting from the use of a new optical lens, the optical data transmission function and the external sensitivity setting (optional) represent just the most important features of this multi-intelligent fiber optic sensor amplifier. A new 4 element LED has been provided as the light source, making it unnecessary to install a voltage adjuster to stabilize the transmitting power. The OL10 range is specifically suited for frequently changing production sequences, when several sensors are used as well as when a very accurate sensitivity setting is required. Typical applications are the detection of contrast marks and metal pins, film width recognition, object recognition, recognition of very small objects on robot arms and conveyor belts. cation with the assistance of the operating mode selection switch. The installed IR-port enables the synchronization of up to 4 amplifiers and the passing-on of the settings to up to 15 further fiber optic amplifiers. An integrated function allows for a reduction of the transmitting power via a push on the button. This way strongly reflecting and highly transparent materials can be measured without any problems and without saturated operation. The OL100346 offers further functions: window compensator, difference and alarm output function.

Various cables are available for supplying fiber optic amplifiers with operating voltage and for selecting the outputs .The master cable sockets contain voltage supply and an output, the slave cable socket only contains an output. For these, the voltage supply is looped through via the connector. All design variants are available in lengths of 2m and 5m.

If several sensors are needed in a production line, devices are networked. With one single command, settings can be copied and/or accessed from the respective memory. When a batch change takes place in the production process, the sensors are adapted by activating only one single function (remote data load). On account of the structure, it is equally possible to dismantle individual amplifiers without having to move or dismantle amplifiers standing on the left or right. description Article OL100370 is an amplifier for fiber optic cables made of plastic fibers. It does not only offer the usual standard functions, but also a number of useful special functions. Despite the many related adjustment options, simple operability takes center stage. Setting is intuitive, with the aid of 3 buttons. Teaching takes place at the push of a button or externally via the remote teaching function. The intensity of the transmitter LED can be reduced at the push of a button. As such, without working in saturated region, heavily reflective and highly transparent material can be measured without any problems. The device has an ECO mode for saving energy and a key lock function for preventing unauthorized operation. The amplifier is best suited for operation with our wide range of fiber optic cables which are made of plastic fibers. 2.2mm and can be conveniently adapted to a smaller diameter using our reduction sleeves. description The ipf plastic optic fiber systems consist of a flexible plastic optic fiber with a sensing head and an optoelectronic fiber optic amplifier. The principle of operation is similar to a through-beam sensor or a diffuse reflection sensor. The optoelectronic fiber optic amplifier includes transmitter, receiver, evaluation electronics and amplifier. It uses e.g. visible red light (660nm), which is transmitted through the fiber by the principle of total internal reflection (see figure “reflection inside a plastic optic fiber”). We offer a wide choice of sensing heads that can be adapted to suit varying field conditions. E.g. as a diffuse reflection sensor or as a through-beam sensor with axial or radial light ipf electronic gmbh

emission or with a 90mm flexible stainless steel sleeve which is even capable of “looking” round corners, if needed. The advantages of plastic optic fibers are the small bending radii. The fiber optics are bendable in any directions within the stated bending radii. It is also possible to cut the fibers in the field to any desired length using the fiber cutting tool AL000007.

reflection inside a plastic optic fiber
application The excellent optical and mechanical characteristics of ipf plastic optic fibers mean they are particularly well-suited to the sensing of small objects in production and automated systems, especially where difficult environmental and installation conditions exist (e.g. in environments with high levels of vibration). As no electrical energy is transmitted over the fibers it is possible to use them in applications with high magnetic fields and with high levels of electrical noise or in radioactive environments as well as in explosion-hazardous areas. In these cases it is necessary to mount the amplifier away from the hazardous area.

Plastic optic fibers can be found in a wide variety of industries including machine building, chemical, pharmaceutical, ceramics and plastics.
notes If there is too much of a kink in the fiber optics, or if they get nicked by sharp objects, then this will cause a dimming of the light in the fiber optics. In case of high mechanical stress (e.g. bending or squeezing for many times) the plastic optic fiber can be damaged at the highly stressed points.
For the installation it must be considered that ipf plastic optic fibers can only be used for applications within the temperature range -40 C to +80°C. For higher temperatures use ipf glass fibers. Chemicals such as organic solvents or gasoline may damage plastic optic fibers.

notes concerning the following fiber optics When using an OL10034x series amplifier, it is possible to set four response speeds. The light intensity of the transmitter LED changes with the response speeds. This in turn results in a change to the operating distance. The stated operating distances correspond to those of the red light device OL100340 in the programmed mode "STD". When using other amplifiers, it is possible that the achievable operating range (sensing range/operating distance) may differ from the stated values!
