Feeding America Diabetes Initiative Food Boxes for Clients with Diabetes

Improving Food Access for Clients with Type 2 Diabetes !

Feeding America Diabetes Initiative food banks supplied Diabetes-Appropriate food to clients through monthly or bi-monthly food distributions. !

Food distributions included pre-packed boxes of nonperishable foods as well as fresh produce, breads, dairy, and frozen meats. !

On average, boxes cost $13-$20 per client and were intended to support meals for 1-2 weeks.

Client Feedback • Clients need to cook to use the items in the box - make sure they utensils and other equipment • Recipes & tips to use the foods in the box are valuable • Include spices and cooking oil in the boxes • Food boxes introduced new products that they’ll try to incorporate into their diet, especially fruits & vegetables • Felt that diabetes was in better control due to food
