FEBRUARY PROGRAM – Harriet Hargrave “Top Ten Tips to Becoming a Better Quilter”

From the President’s Scrap Bag Where did January go? For QBTS it was a very busy month. August Cole’s visit and then just two days later, a retreat at Ft. Caswell made the month fly by. Attendance at the January meeting was over 110 and our membership hit 174. Wow! Longevity pins were given out at the meeting. Three members received pins for over 25 years as members by QBTS. Nancy Lewis has been a member for 28 years. If you think you should have received a pin for 10, 15, or 20 years of continuous membership, please see me before the February meeting. Another quilt favorite is coming back this month. Harriet Hargrave will be our special guest in February. Many members of QBTS wanted another opportunity to learn more from her. A special thank you to June Bell, a new member of QBTS, for volunteering to take over the position of Assistant Treasurer. Nancy Heck, President

National Quilting Day Get ready to spend a day quilting and having fun with friends and other quilters. National Quilting Day is Saturday, March 17th. We will meet at First Christian Church (where the guild meetings are) from 9:00 - 3:00. There will be several options for you to work on: 1. Neo-Natal Quilt. This quilt will be given to the babies in the neo-natal unit at New Hanover Hospital. It is a pattern that uses 5 inch squares in lights and dark/mediums or brights. We will have squares cut, but if you have scraps that you would like to use, feel free to bring them along. You will need about 50 lights and 50 dark/mediums. 2. Habitat Quilt. This quilt is given to the new homeowner of a house built by Habitat for Humanity in Wilmington. This is a pattern of houses that uses 2 1/2 inch strips. We will have strips cut, but again, if you have scraps you would like to use, bring them with you. You will need 2 1/2 inch strips for the sky (blue) and strips for the houses (house colors or novelties.). There is a border of piano keys (can use same fabric as houses or floral prints that would look like a flower garden around the edge.). 3. Any project that you would like to work on. It should be a great day! Bring a lunch and your sewing supplies. We will have a sign up at the next meeting, or you can email Carolyn Baker [email protected]. Please let us know what you want to work on, so we will make sure to have enough fabric cut. See you there!! Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington

Workshop News Augusta Cole‘s classes were great. We should be seeing lots of curved log cabin quilts at ―show and tell‖ throughout the year. Augusta is such fun – no wonder people want to keep bringing her back! (She is teaching ―Snappy Squares‖ at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, July 1-6. Check it out at www.FolkSchool.org) Harriet Hargraves‘ Machine Quilting Class: As of this writing there is one opening in the Monday & Tuesday, February 27-28, session and two openings in the Saturday & Sunday, February 25-26, session. If you are interested, let me know as soon as possible. If you know a non-member that is interested, they are welcome to sign up at an increased cost of $70. Remember B.J. Berlo‘s sweatshirt jacket we all swooned over at the Fashion Show in May? She is going to be teaching us her technique on Saturday, March 24. It will be an all-day class, and tuition is only $10. Registration will be at the February Guild meeting; if you won‘t be at the meeting, just contact me directly. Anne Hope Marvin is teaching Hawaiian appliqué (handwork) on April 14. Cost for class is only $10, and registration will be at the February Guild meeting. Again, if you won‘t be at the meeting, just contact me directly. And, please keep sharing your ideas. All of the above classes were scheduled due to requests by Guild members. Mary Ann Kotas [email protected] 383-0901

REMINDER: If New Hanover County Schools close because of a storm or other emergency, Guild activities will not meet.

QBTS 30th Annual Quilt Show 2012 WOW – this year is moving on quickly! Hard to believe this is now February, and we only have a few more months before the Quilt Show. We hope all your projects – quilts, boutique and resale items – are going along great. I know I need to work a little faster on a few of mine! Just to remind you yet again that this year the Quilt Show will be at the Baptist Activity Center in Wilmington and open to the public all day Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24. Thursday night will be the private reception for the Quilt Show entrants, their guests and our members--admission free if you have a quilt in the Show. We will have more on the reception, quilt registration dates, and volunteer signup sheets later in the spring. We are still in need of volunteers to head up the Hospitality, Transportation, and Signage. If you can help in any of these areas, please let us know. The Quilt Show Committee has begun holding our regular monthly meetings – 5:30 p.m. at the church prior to the regular Guild Meeting. Thanks much, Dianne Putnam and Cynthia Helms Quilters by the Sea Guild of Wilmington

NOTE FROM AUGUSTA COLE with her hint for keeping control of those scraps. I couldn‘t quite remember all the sizes; so I contacted her to refresh our memory-Newsletter Editor

Please tell the group how wonderful they are and I miss them. I think your area would be a fabulous retirement spot :-) Who knows what will happen after my 3 remaining years. I cut 6" and 5" squares, then I cut strips and/or squares from 4-1/2", 2-1/2", 2 " and 11/2". They need to be cut for the sizes they use most often. Remember "Variety is the Spice of Life." This not only gives me vintage fabric, but saves space in my fabric storage drawers. Happy scrappy quilting, Augusta

If you still have a quilt(s) that you would like to have displayed at the NC Aquarium at Ft. Fisher, please contact me so we can set up a time that I can get the quilt. I need all the quilts by Feb. 15th. Either email me or call as soon as possible. [email protected] , 371-0426 or 371-0501

Quilt Fabric: Fabric will be available for sale from the stash of Myrtle Bergman, who is downsizing due to moving. The fabric will be set up in the kitchen starting at 6:15 prior to the Feb. 27th meeting.

Dearest Customers and Friends, It is with much regret, that we must announce the closing of The Country Collection Quilt Shop in Jacksonville, NC. This closing has come about due to the decision to retire, after many years of business in both Jacksonville, and previously Kinston. While this decision will be in the best interest of the shop, it comes with sadness for many of our customers have become our good friends. We look forward to seeing many of you in the shop, as we have reduced all our merchandise storewide by 40% off retail/sticker pricing. During this going out of business sale, we will no longer be honoring competitors coupons, nor guild discounts- as the 40% across-the-board reduction on all merchandise will supercede all other discounts. All merchandise sold will be on a final- no returns basis. Fabric purchases are limited to a minimum 1/2 yard cut. Our sale will begin on Wednesday, February 15th and run on our Wednesday through Saturday schedule of shop hours 10am to 4pm Wednesday through Friday, and 10am to 2pm on Saturday. Please note that although the sale begins on the 15th, the shop will be closed during the week of February 22nd through 25th, due to prior commitments. We will reopen the following week on Wednesday, February 29th. All merchandise will be sold on a first come, first served basis- so please do not hesitate to come early on as the sale begins, to get the best selection in high quality quilting supplies. Nothing will be held back, entire stock is represented in this sale. During this sale, understandably, there will be no special orders taken. We want to thank all of you for your continued support over the years we have had the shops open, and hope that we provided many opportunities for starting and finishing projects- as well as some sharing and learning experiences. We have enjoyed your friendship and patronage, and hope to continue to see many of you in the quilting circles we all have our private interests in.
