President’s Message Story by Nicole Boggs

Happy New Year

A Toast January is a time to celebrate the New Year. At the OCR towers we have many things to celebrate. The distinguished highlight of 2011 is our 50th anniversary. Orange Coast Region was chartered on January 6, 1961. A grand celebration is planned for fall of 2011; keep your eyes posted for more information to come. Or if you have some great ideas, shoot me an email at [email protected], we would love to add you to the planning team. Speaking about the team, OCR would not be such a wonderful club if it

were not for each and every wonderful volunteer. Every job big and small is so important, from Maryann Marks our Pando Production Director to Patricia Lynn Taylor the Breakfast Club Greeter. If you get a moment thank a volunteer for their time. I know I am ever so grateful for all of the great activities and welcoming atmosphere each of these volunteers helps to create for our membership. In December OCR celebrated three of our outstanding volunteers. Each year we honor a male and female enthusiast of the year and, at the discretion of the president, the special President’s award. This year’s recipients truly gave 110%. I think 2010 was one of the biggest years for tours. From fall to summer we were having one a month, sometimes even two. All of these tours, in addition to being my right hand man, were the hard work of our male enthusiast, Gordon Williams. Our female enthusiast of the year could very well be my ghostwriter. We were all impressed with the witty Holiday Ball emails sent out to round up

FEBRUARY 2011

the troops. She wows us every month with amazing new, unique Porsche apparel; it is hard to not come home with something new after either breakfast club or autoX. But most of all, I am appreciative of Monica Asbury’s willingness to step in and help without even being asked. Most recently, she volunteered to organize the 50th anniversary celebration, quite a production in itself. The last award, the President’s Award, went to an entire family. This family wins the most auto-X jackets and can pretty much coordinate an auto-X single handedly. They’re the key to timing, have made remarkable contributions to the club through the new website and dealer sponsorship program, in addition to frequent stints as being club photographers and contributors to the Pando. If you have not guessed it, Team Scheussler is the go to family for the club. A big thank you to Bob, Lisa, Karin, Kris and Lori! Looking forward to the New Year with our great OCR family, hope to see you soon!

There has been some controversy in the OCR Office Suite high atop the aerie we call our home. It seems some people want to say twenty eleven and others want to say two thousand eleven. This may all seem a minor disagreement to you but you must know that this kind of obsession over the merest of details is

How it all works out then You’ll notice I used the full cognomen for the club; Orange Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America. I suppose to be super correct I would need to note that we are in “Zone 8” of the Porsche Club of America. Our overall organization is, of course, the “Porsche Club of America”. And within this organization there are Zones, we happen to be in Zone 8. Within the zones are regions and the regions are named, not numbered, which (Continued on Page 24)

A Couple Porsches for a Porsche Couple Story by Doris Chilton Photography by Scott Chu Photograpy As a first generation American, I spent much of my youth with five uncles that loved sports cars while my parents were finishing their degrees and working in to support the family. I grew up as a tomboy, playing with RC cars and toy planes. At age seven I was old enough to reach the top of the bookshelf with the help of a chair. I waited with great anticipation for my uncles to leave the house to attend their classes so I could play with the model cars carefully perched atop and presumably out of my reach. I remember every year my father and uncles would take time off to go to the LA Auto show, and of course they had no choice but to take me too. At eighteen, I got my license and my father let me borrow his Toyota Sienna. Yes, I was able to drive a mini van that can! After weekends of driving my grandmother around to temples and supermarkets, I proved to my father that I was a safe and responsible driver. However after my experience of driving a mini van, I knew in my heart that my dream car would be a two-seater!

Doris’ first car ever, 2005 Gray Scion TC

I finally got my wish a couple of years after meeting my dear husband Tom, when we both decided it was time to upgrade my Scion TC (with its back seats folded to the down position to simulate a two-seater). This is when my love for Porsches phase began. Tom suggested that I look into a Boxster as he

felt it would fit my personality... small, zippy and fun in the sun. When we drove by the dealership in Newport Beach, I saw an 08 Boxster Spyder on display. Decked out in gray racing stripes and white rims, it looked like my kind of car! Let’s just say we kept on making excuses to go to Newport for dinner for the next couple of months.

The white 2008 Boxster with blue top & white rims

a Panamera Turbo, he became intrigued. Sitting in the car, the myriad of buttons made it feel like the cockpit of an airplane and when we experienced launch control the thrill was greater than any roller coaster. We were amazed by the handling and control you have during take off... it must be why they call it launch control. After scouring dealer inventories online for a car with the exact options we wanted, including red seat belts and dials, we found one that fit the bill at Rusnak in Thousand Oaks. We knew we had to see it in person, as the Aqua Blue Metallic paint was difficult to evaluate in the pictures online. So, we made the trek to the dealer. In person, we felt it was spectacular! This was one big fish we weren’t going to let get away. We were in great shape! Tom was thrilled, and I woke up every morning looking forward to driving my Boxster.

However, one day after a family dinner we left a little early to look at cars at Circle Porsche. It was then, once again, that I fell in love with a white Boxster sitting proudly on the show room floor. We returned the very next day and took it home. I gave it a sponge bath every other day and found excuses to go to places where we normally walked. At Tom’s 2010 Panamera Turbo. “Amazing! I didn’t think it was possible to make the seats look like new!” (Barry, Fullerton) Barry was just like many of you; he loved his car and wanted it to look its’ best and was disappointed with the way his leather seats looked. They weren’t in bad condition but they were showing the signs of wear. He didn’t want to spend the $1500.00 + labor* or more that it would take to replace the leather and so he thought he would just have to live with it. He didn’t and neither do you! He called Pioneer Leather Restoration, Inc. Since his leather was in good condition except for the appearance, we came to his home and re-applied the finish coating that is found on all upholstery leather. Three hours and $295.00** later you see what his reaction was. Call today to make your Porsche leather seats look like new and, as a bonus when the work is performed, mention this ad and we will give you for free a leather cleaning and conditioning kit (A $12.95 value). All work is guaranteed. * Source GAHH Upholstery

OCR Holiday Ball Story by Nicole Cooper-Boggs OCR’s Holiday Ball was once again the party of the year. Folks dressed to impress, Fast Freddy and Cooper Boggs were decked out in their holiday vests. Mary and David Hong hosted a great silent auction overflowing with goodies and toys. Garey Cooper, our MC, entertained us with a spectacular show that was stolen away by the comedic relief of his beau Maxine. After the dinner plates were set, OCR president Nicole got the evening ceremonies on a roll. The special President’s awards were given with glee to Miss Monica Asbury and the Scheussler’s family that makes up quite the team. Our evening would not be a party with out a dance. Did you know that Don Readdinger can do the chicken dance? Thank you to all for making this a spectacular ball.

Crossing The Border Story by L.B.Moore OCR / GPX Joint Photo Rally Sunday, October 24, 2010 dawned without rain for the first time in ten days! The Rally Gods were working for us. The hardy rally participants began arriving at Frisco’s Car Hop Diner, adjacent to the traffic circle in Long Beach, at 8:30 am. I say hardy because the past two weeks of wet weather scared a few members off. Registration went off without a hitch thanks to Gloria’s preparation and Judy Lech’s able assistance. We had 22 registered cars signed in by the time the Drivers’ Meeting started. At this meeting the participants discovered the tasks before them were to: 1) follow the route; 2) find the objects in the eight pictures provided and record the order in which those objects appeared along the route; and 3) find the answers to the three Bonus Questions. Piece of cake...right? Well, apparently not quite. Read on. The route instructions contained only one none-straight-forward element. Some instructions were designated for 12

the ODD numbered cars and some were designated for the EVEN numbered cars. This resulted in half of the participants seeing one sign that the other half did not see, and vice versa. Thus, by the end of the rally each half finished having only been able to find seven of the eight objects in the pictures. This caused some consternation among the teams and some errors. The additional challenge(s) had to do with the Bonus Questions, details to follow. At about 9:30, Marty Goldsmith, my GPX Rally Co-Master, began sending each of the participants out onto the route in aprox. 30-second intervals. The route began with a climb up Signal Hill to Skyline Park on top, which afforded the participants

The silent auction team, Mary and Dave Hong

a spectacular panoramic view of Long Beach, the harbor, San Pedro and the Palos Verde Peninsula. Again, thanks to the Rally Gods the view was there and impressive. Next, the participants drove down the backside of the hill, alongside Long Beach airport (and under the runway), past Cal State Long Beach (cool pyramid), and then south and east to The Border. The Border was the San Gabriel River that is the administrative boundary line between OCR and GPX regions, the

Jim & John’s Northwest Roadtrip Story by Jerry Ainsworth “Jim & John” are pseudonyms my brother Mike and I adopted during the cold & dark Alaska winters when boyhood playtime usually involved zooming our model cars around the house. The rationale for these aliases is lost in time but I faintly recall this change in identity happened shortly after I saw “The Greatest Show on Earth” when I became infatuated with Betty Hutton. I somehow morphed into the character of John Hutton. I told my brother his new name was Jim and he was married to Betty Grable, one of the most popular pin-up girls of WWII. At 4 years old he couldn’t fathom the meaning nor object but at least this one time I did right by my little brother. Growing up in Anchorage in the late 50’s meant the only “live” sports broadcasts were via radio and the home teams were the NY Yankees, SF 49ers and Washington Huskies. Coincidently, one became life-long fans of those teams.

Last October Mike called to tell me he was going to visit our uncle in Salem who was opening an antique auto museum. He also had business in Bellevue so I thought it was a perfect time to take in a U of Washington football game before the renovation of Husky stadium. I had never seen a football game in Husky stadium so I told Mike it was road trip time in the Porsche. My brother quipped, “sounds like Jim & John’s next adventure”. Luckily, I was able to get UW/ Oregon State tickets at the terrific discount price of only 3 times face value. I picked up my brother in the Bay Area and a short, 14 hours later we were in Seattle. It was sunny all the way with stunning scenic views of the Pacific Northwest. The next day with boyish enthusiasm, we drove to Husky stadium 2 hours early only to be met with an almost empty parking lot. I thought that we had been projected into the twilight

zone or at least into the Alzheimer’s zone. Ticket information said the game started at 1 but we found out it was changed to 7:15 PM for television. This minor inconvenience allowed us to lunch with our nephew at Ivar’s on the wharf, partaking of the best clam chowder in Seattle. Lunch was followed by perfect seats on the 45 yard line and a nail-
