Working to improve the quality of life for disabled children, young people and their families in Derby City and Southern Derbyshire

February 2018 Bulletin The Department of Education has issued a policy update on 23 January 2018 on ensuring families have access to information, advice and support about SEND services and provision. ·

“We expect existing Independent Supporter providers to continue supporting parents and young people until new arrangements are developed in each local area. We expect existing Independent Supporter sub-contracts to novate to the new contractor in the first instance, pending the development of new arrangements in each local area.”

Good News, we will be able to continue to support families through the Education, Health and Care process, including attending Annual reviews until March 2019. Our Independent Support Team can be accessed through our Single Point of Access on 01332 785658. The Family Support team would appreciate your ideas on speakers, activities, or information you might like to see at the support groups. We very much value and appreciate your input and support. The children have enjoyed some fun days out as well as some brilliant themed days at Umbrella House. We welcomed 2018 in with a New Year’s party and even had a special visit from Mrs Sparkle. Mrs Sparkle showed the children some amazing magic tricks, sang songs, danced, wiggled and even painted some of the children’s faces! The children had so much fun and there were smiles galore! All of the children, staff and volunteers are looking forward to some more exciting trips in 2018.

What’s happening in Umbrella Young Adult Services INDE The young adults have had a wonderful Christmas here at Umbrella! The groups have enjoyed a variety of festive days out as well as some Christmassy activities at Umbrella House. The INDE group took part in a secret Christmas mission to make presents for their families. They made beautiful wreaths to hang up at home, miniature iced Christmas cakes and a Christmas plant pot with a cyclamen in. After all this hard work, the group enjoyed a festive buffet and even pulled a cracker or two before finishing off the day relaxing and watching ‘Elf’.

Come and have your say……. Umbrella are undertaking a research study to review our Young Adult Services. This is a wonderful opportunity to evaluate our current services and to take a look at future development of services to ensure we give young adults support they require. Even if you’re not currently accessing our services please do come along and let us know your aspirations for the future! If you are a parent or carer with a young person who is aged 16 years and over we would like to invite you along to one of our consultation events.
