FLYING HIGH LOCAL exporters are celebrating soaring successes with a night of flying fun - so loosen off your safety belt, sit back and enjoy the journey. It's the 26th year of the fabulous Bay of Plenty Export NZ Awards and this year's unique theme is the 1950s Golden Age of Air Travel. Finalists throughout the Bay of Plenty are gearing up in glam 1950s garb - reminiscent of a time when flying was a luxurious

experience for the affluent - to celebrate exporting achievements. This garb may include posh 1950s traveller attire, rock and roll getups, aviation themed or black tie, says executive officer Melissa Conrad. “We thought this would be a fun theme, celebrating a time when air travel was very glamorous with copious amounts of leg room and pampering... and it's in-keeping with our exporters as 'flying high' and

aviation is obviously an important part of their business. This is how some of our exporters get their products to market.” The fun 1950s theme and “flying to export success” play-on-words will be the background to the export awards where local companies get to shine and receive the recognition they deserve for their exporting successes. Each year organisers strive to think of outrageous, fun-powered themes to create

A CELEBRATION OF

the “event of the year” and it is always something out of the ordinary. This year the sponsors of the Bay of Plenty Export NZ Awards decided to show off their acting skills and sense of humour in a hilarious video which perfectly showcases the theme for the awards night, the people involved and the fantastic sponsors. The teaser video was released in March and has revealed some surprising comedic talents in the mix. View the video on www.bopexportnzawards.org.nz

EXPORTING SUCCESS EXPORT New Zealand has once again, been staggered by the popularity of the awards night.

They also had the most amount of entries this year - and the judges had some very hard decisions to make.

Table tickets have been snapped up within 24 hours of going on sale.

“We did have more entries than previous years and a number of businesses missed out on becoming finalists - it is hugely competitive.

Melissa says the quick turnaround was pleasing and the new social media and Export Awards website played a part in the events sell-out success.

“But it is a positive as it's indicative that businesses are doing very well in the Bay of Plenty.”

Award categories are; the YOU Travel Emerging Exporter of the Year Award, Page Macrae Engineering Innovation in Export Award, Beca Achievement in Export Award, New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Service to Export Award and the ultimate prize - the Sharp Tudhope Lawyers Exporter of the Year Award.

The awards are held to showcase the success stories of local companies and to inspire others. Finalists are all businesses that are contributing to growing the local and New Zealand’s economy.

Again, this years’ principal sponsor is Zespri International and Melissa says the export awards could not go ahead without the support of all their sponsors, many of which have been continuous sponsors for over 20 years.

There are five awards for excellence which culminate in the awards ceremony on June 24.

NZ MANUKA GROUP RECOGNIZED FOR

WORLD LEADING INNOVATION

EASTERN Bay of Plenty business, New Zealand Manuka Group, is a finalist for the 2016 Innovation in Export Award and company founder, Phil Caskey, is a finalist for Services to Export. Phil’s incredible contribution to innovation in the wider Ma¯nuka industry, and as the driving force behind the company’s growth, has positioned this business as a world leader.

The Innovation in Export award recognises Bay of Plenty businesses displaying outstanding innovation in exporting. The winner must illustrate how innovative strategies and

practices have contributed to exporting success.

Originally established as a honey processor, NZ Manuka Group (NZMG) continues to invest heavily in scientific research and development, discovering new opportunities and markets worldwide for its Manuka products, available under their Melora and Kiwi Manuka brands, as well as the pharmaceutical grade agar. Through this focus on R&D, NZMG is now the biggest producer of Manuka oil in NZ. Sustainable harvesting of its Manuka plantations provides the brush from which oil is extracted plus ensures the trees flourish over their 20-year lifecycle. “We sell Manuka oil for its wide benefits to our customers around the world where it is used in many applications such as cosmetics, soaps, shampoos and creams,” explains CEO, Karl Gradon.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Service to Export award No finalists for this award, just one deserving surprise winner on the night

However, the opportunities for Manuka oil are much further reaching as the group is now establishing through its recently launched Manuka oil verification and quality rating programme called MßTK®. Manuka oil tested for the presence of Manuka ßetaTriketones is graded according to

the percentage of ßeta-Triketones found in the oil from 10+ through to 40+. “We have our own in-house scientific research facilities, chemical and microbiological staff and labs, and we are collaborating with other NZ scientists to extend our knowledge for future higher added value products as well as a fuller understanding of this now economically important natural resource.”

THE STORY OF

STREAMLAND HONEY PLANT LTD.

MID-January 2014 we started works to transform a newly completed engineering building into a modern honey packing plant located in the heart of Rotorua. We pre-ordered plant and equipment from New Zealand businesses like Crystech in Tauranga and Hunter Filling Systems in Hamilton which had proven industry experience, reliability and excellent customer support. Streamland Honey Plant produced its first batch of honey in mid-March 2014. We source bulk honeys from all over New Zealand from more than 40 beekeepers. We test and grade those honeys, then create our blends and pack to order into jars mainly from 250g to 1kg, occasionally specialised packaging as per order. We pack a full range of Manuka honeys, which carry the UMF quality mark. In our range we have monofloral honeys like Rewarewa and Pohutukawa.

In November 2014 we launched our Lemon ‘n Honey product. Sales out-stripped production and grew rapidly. In 2015 we launched our Cranberry ‘n Honey product. Again we experienced significant demand. Our flagship brand is Streamland. We export to China, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.

We also contract pack honey for a select number of key clients. We are focused on producing a high quality product and our customers have appreciated this and demand has increased significantly. We have remained neutral and operated with integrity and this has allowed us to develop strong relationships within our industry. As a result we have been growing at more than 100% per annum. We started with four staff, me and my wife included. We now have 12 staff and we have become a multi-million dollar business exporting hundreds of tons of New Zealand honey worldwide tucked away in beautiful Rotorua.

Manuka is becoming recognised worldwide for its unique properties. Our Manuka Honey is UMF rated and is a certified New Zealand made product. Enjoy the deliciously pure taste of nature’s nectar.
