FAST FACTS AND FIGURES

June 2012

Our business Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has in just eight years established itself as the world’s leading airline. Set up by Royal (Amiri) Decree in July 2003, Etihad Airways commenced commercial operations in November 2003 and has gone on to become one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of commercial aviation. This airline has received a range of awards that reflect its position as the leading premium airline brand in the world, including ‘World’s Leading Airline’ at the World Travel Awards in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Its main business is the international air transportation of passengers. Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays, Etihad Cargo and a global contact centre organisation as part of its commercial group. In order to meet predicted fleet, passenger and destination growth by 2020 – which plans for more than 25 million passengers to fly to more than 100 destinations aboard a fleet of 150 planes – the airline will need a workforce of approximately 20,000 people. In 2011, Etihad Airways saw passenger numbers rise to 8.3 million, a 17 per cent increase from 2010. The airline reported a full year EBIT of US$137 million, on revenues up 36 per cent to US$4.1 billion (2010: US$2.98 billion). The financial results for 2011 included earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and rentals (EBITDAR) of US$648 million, with a net profit of US$14 million. The record result exceeded the airline’s 2011 target, which was to break even.

Our community

Employee growth Number of employees

Etihad Airways employs over 9,700 staff representing more than 126 nationalities, 8,181 of whom are based at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi. This diverse workforce is our most important asset, and their wellbeing is critical to our successful growth and sustainability. In addition to very competitive compensation packages we continue to invest heavily in making this a good place to work.

10,000

In the local community and across our network, we continue to invest in people – empowering and developing individuals to take up meaningful economic roles in their communities. This commitment is no better illustrated than at our home base in Abu Dhabi by Etihad Airways’ career development and nationalisation programs. Further afield, we support a range of educational initiatives to develop both business skills and artistic talent in all disciplines.

5,000

Our sponsorships Etihad Airways supports a number of leading sporting and cultural events in the United Arab Emirates and around the world. The airline’s major sponsorships include the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Manchester City Football Club, Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Sport Australia Hall of Fame, GAA Hurling All Ireland Senior Championship, Harlequins Rugby Football Club and V8 Supercars Australia.

Our environment Etihad Airways has a comprehensive environmental strategy which makes provision for emissions reduction, waste management and efficient resource utilisation. However, as part of an industry heavily reliant on fossil fuel, particular focus is placed on emissions management and climate change as airlines face increasing pressure to take proactive measures to reduce their dependence on oil. Over and above the significant investment in our modern fleet of 67 aircraft, we continue to implement initiatives that drive improved fuel efficiency and reduce our emissions and this is clearly reflected in annual efficiency improvement across our fleet. Equally importantly, we are committed to play our role in what we see as the most important carbon abatement strategy, namely the development of a commercially viable biofuel. Working with the Masdar institute, Boeing and Honeywell’s UOP, Etihad will invest US$2 million over five years in a biofuel research and development project investigating salt-tolerant sources of biofuel in the desert coastal regions of Abu Dhabi.

As a natural consequence of living and working in a multinational, cosmopolitan city and by virtue of our own diverse workforce, we see it as a priority to connect people, support projects and initiatives that facilitate ongoing dialogue and engagement to promote cultural awareness and understanding. As a driver of tourism, we play a critical role in promoting the Emirate’s rich culture and heritage. Oxford Economics has calculated that when all of these factors are combined, Etihad Airways made a total economic contribution of nearly US$7 billion (9.6 per cent) to Abu Dhabi’s non-oil GDP in 2011.
