From The Deputy Principal From the Deputy I hope you and your family had a relaxing break during the holidays and that you found lots of ways to keep warm. It is wonderful to see the children engaged in their learning and enjoying being back with their friends. Fr Fred We congratulate Fr Fred who has been appointed parish priest of the Adelaide Hills Parish from August 10, 2014. It is with great sadness that we farewell Fr Fred from All Saints this week. Fr Fred has been a wonderful role model for the children, staff, parents/carers and members of the community and has led us in many memorable masses and liturgies. We will miss his visits to the classrooms and the many rich discussions he shared with the children. We wish Fr Fred all the very best in his new role and we will offer our prayers for him as he takes up this important ministry. Tomorrow Friday, 1 August at 9:15am we will be holding a liturgy in the hall to farewell Fr Fred and thank him for all the great work he has done at All Saints. We invite all parents/carers and members of the community to join us in this celebration. Morning tea will be provided for parishioners and families after the Liturgy.

Children and families are currently donating books for The Great Book Swap. After the parade children will have the opportunity during the day to purchase a book for a gold coin. The Great Book Swap encourages reading and also raises funds to support Indigenous Literacy. Thank you to those who have already donated books, we would welcome many more. The basket is located in the front office. Gina Cusano, who does a wonderful job of coordinating the week, would appreciate some help with the Book Fair held in the Resource Centre before and after school. If you are a registered volunteer with a current Police Clearance and are able to help please contact Gina in the Resource Centre. Safety Using The Loop The Loop continues to be a busy place for drop offs in the morning and collecting children in the afternoon. Drivers are not permitted to park their car or leave the vehicle as this holds up the traffic. The safety of the children is paramount. We ask all families to be cautious when using the loop and in particular to observe the road rules in relation to the roundabout. We appreciate the many drivers who display patience, courtesy and common sense. Sculpture Gathering We are very excited about designing a new sculpture for our courtyard. Already teachers and children are talking and thinking about what this new sculpture might look like and are coming up with ideas. On Thursday, 7th August at 2.15pm we will be gathering with Anna Small & Warren Pickering in the staff room to discuss and share ideas. You are very welcome to join us. Office Closed Please note: due to an important staff meeting the front office will be closed at 3.30pm on Monday, 11 August. Helen Ward’s Retirement This week a letter from Paul Sharkey, the Director of Catholic Education, announcing Helen Ward’s retirement was sent home via the children. This letter is also available on the school website: Helen Ward letter. Helen will retire at the end of this school year. We thank Helen for all her hard work and commitment to All Saints over the last 9 years. We will miss her greatly and wish her all the very best in the next stage of her life’s journey.

Book Week, Week 5 (18-22 August) This year’s theme for Book Week is “Connect to Reading". This theme certainly promotes the importance of reading for all of us. During this week the children will be participating in activities in the Resource Centre and attending “The Right Balance” performance in the hall. The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Resource Centre where books can be purchased before and after school all week. The Book Week Parade will be held on Friday, 22 August at 9.15am in the court yard Helen Thompson (weather permitting). At All Saints we encourage parents/carers and children to Deputy Principal create and make costumes out of materials from home. 2

The Year 2/3 children helped to build a roof for an orphanage in Africa!

Benvenuti al Termine 3, spero che voi abbiate passato una buona pausa! (Welcome to Term 3, I hope you all had a great break!) For the first few weeks of this term we will be learning about L’Ambiente (The Environment). The four main environments that we shall be focusing on are Il Deserto (The Desert), L’Ambiente Marino (The Marine Environment), L’Ambiente Nebbioso/Nevoso (The Misty/Snowy Environment) and La Foresta (The Forest).

It was so exciting to hear news that the money raised from the ‘African Concert’ had already gone towards building a roof for an orphanage. As soon as the money was sent, the roof was up within days! The children are feeling so proud of themselves and the difference they have made to the lives of children in Tanzania. Summer (2C): I think we raised money to build the roof so the children could sleep in their bedrooms. It makes me feel really good because they finally get a bedroom. Cameron (2P): It makes me feel great because our concert money went all the way to Africa. Kayla (2HR): I feel happy for them that they have a roof and they don’t get rained on or cold. Charlotte (3P): I am happy and proud that we got enough money for them to build a roof. Annabella (3D): It made me feel happy for the orphans that they get to sleep somewhere else other than their classroom. It’s helpful for the teachers so they don’t have to do any difficult things like trying to find them a comfortable place to sleep in. Jared C (3O): It was really cool because it would be hard to make it. I think the children will love it! Inside the classroom, it would feel calmer now.

The younger children have begun by meditating to calming sounds of il deserto (the desert) and then brainstorming their own vocabulary lists related to this theme. Once establishing which words they wish to learn in Italian the children were then able to create desert landscapes that they will label in coming lessons. We have talked about how deserts in Australia vary from those found in places such as Mexico and Egypt. I bambini (the children) have been particularly fascinated with gli animali (the animals) found in the respective deserts so we will look closer at these as the term goes on. So as we look ahead to another exciting term in l’aula d’Italiano (the Italian room), cordiali saluti come al solito (best wishes as always), Il Signor Vaudo e La Signora Pardoe

What is a Play Pod? A Play Pod is a large shipping container full of materials and equipment (loose parts) that can stimulate, facilitate and enhance children’s play. We are now in the process of filling our Play Pod with materials for the children to explore. We have created a wish list of ‘loose parts’ that the school community may be able to help us with which includes: electrical cable reels, plastic crates, old hammocks, old style telephones, cardboard tubes, PVC pipe off-cuts and connectors, cash registers, plastic pots and buckets, foam off-cuts; fabric, netting, saucepans and boat oars. If you are able to donate any of these items or have anything else you think would be useful, please do not bring them in just yet but leave your details at the front office. Thank you Play Pod Committee

Share our common love for books while raising money to support Indigenous literacy

RESOURCE CENTRE This year the theme for Book Week is: “Connect to Reading” August 18-22 Information about Book Week has gone home this week and is also available on the school website: Book Week flyer. I am seeking volunteers to help sell books at the Book Fair during Book Week. If you are a registered volunteer with a current Police Clearance and can spare some time before and after school please see me in the library.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Children, teachers, staff and parents/carers bring a book from home that you really enjoy but can bear to part with. A book that you think a child will love just as you have. Place your book in the basket in the front office before 22 August. The Great Book Swap will take place after our Book Parade on Friday, 22 August. Bring in a gold coin to select a new book you would like to take home and enjoy. All proceeds will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, to support literacy in Indigenous communities.

"Not only does The Great Book Swap Challenge encourage reading but it raises funds for kids in remote communities who don’t have access to books. Everyone wins.” Author: Andy Griffiths

The Premier’s Reading Challenge closes 5 September so please keep on reading. When forms are complete please hand them in to Gina in the library. Gina Cusano Resource Centre 6
