About the College Located in the foothills of the majestic Adirondack Mountains, the Hamilton campus is set on a hilltop that overlooks the Oriskany and Mohawk valleys of Central New York. The surroundings are rural and lush, consisting of rolling terrain, gentle hills, wooded glens, dairy farms, fine old houses and tree-lined streets. Yet Hamilton’s location puts it within easy range of New York, Toronto, Boston and other major northern metropolitan centers. The College, chartered in 1812, is coeducational with approximately 1,800 students. Its strength lies in highly regarded academic programs administered by a deeply committed faculty who welcome close collaboration with students. Fundamental to a Hamilton education is the faculty’s expectation that each student develops the ability to read, observe and listen with critical perception, and to think, write and speak with clarity, understanding and precision. Hamilton graduates can be found making important contributions in nearly every professional field, and because of the College’s educational contributions to their success, alumni remain enthusiastically loyal to and supportive of the College. As reflected in applications for admission, Hamilton is considered one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country. And because of the large number of applications that the College receives each year, the student body is unusually diverse. Students come to Hamilton from all parts of the United States — indeed, from all parts of the globe. In such an environment, students learn to appreciate differences and prepare for life in an increasingly global society. In evaluating prospective students, the admission committee looks for academic achievement as well as personal accomplishments outside the classroom. Thus, both the athlete who excels on the playing field and the musician who participates in a community ensemble have the talents the College is seeking.

Athletic Facilities Consistent with the classrooms, laboratories, libraries, studios and other facilities that support the academic program, Hamilton College’s athletic facilities are exceptional by nearly any measure. The diversity and quality of these facilities emphasize the school’s commitment to the development of both the mind and the body. Steuben Field is home to Hamilton football and lacrosse. The 2,000-seat facility received major renovations in 2009, when an artificial grass surface was installed. The approximate cost of the upgrade was $1.35 million. The balance of the funds were contributed by Hamilton alumni and parents of current studentathletes. Outdoor facilities on campus include the natural grass William D. Love Field used for men’s and women’s soccer; the Walter H. Pritchard Track; the artificial turf field for field hockey; the Royce Baseball Field; the Ferguson Intramural Softball Field and the nine-hole Tompkins Golf Course. The Russell Sage Rink, the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House, the William M. Bristol, Jr. Pool and the Little Squash Center are the indoor facilities. The $6.1 million squash facility opened in October 2006 with 10 regulation-size courts, including two with exhibition gallery seating. The Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center opened in October 2006. The center houses a dance studio, room for aerobic/cardio training, space for resistance and weight-training, a multipurpose exercise room and a three-story climbing wall. The state-of-the-art facility triples the current space for fitness activities on a campus where approximately 75 percent of the student body -- and many members of the faculty and staff -- work out regularly. The Blood Fitness and Dance Center is a 30,000 square-foot facility with 9,600 square feet used for fitness and weightlifting. Precor cardio equipment is featured in the fitness area. The equipment includes elliptical machines, treadmills and stationary bicycles. The weight training equipment is by Cybex and includes power lift, hammer strength and positrac.

Program Overview Michael de Percin ‘15 leads Hamilton College into its 122nd football season in 2014. The defensive tackle made the 2013 NESCAC all-conference first team after he finished the year with 32 tackles, including 9.5 for a loss of 31 yards, two sacks and a forced fumble. Chase Rosenberg ‘17 ranked fifth in the conference in passing yards and total offense yards per game as a freshman. Linebacker John Phelan ‘16 was eighth in the NESCAC with 8.1 tackles per game and he also intercepted two passes. The team captains are Nick Noonan ‘15, Vince DiCindio ‘15 and de Percin. The season gets started at Tufts University on Sept. 20. The first home game of 2014 is against Trinity College on Oct. 4 and Bowdoin College visits Clinton on Oct. 11 for Fallcoming and Family Weekend. The Continentals host Williams College on Oct. 25 and the 35th annual Old Rocking Chair Classic against Middlebury College will be played at home on Nov. 1. An artificial grass surface was installed at 117-year-old Steuben Field in the summer of 2009. Three of the most prolific players in program history graduated the past two years. James Stanell ‘14 made the NESCAC all-conference team in each of the last two seasons. Stanell is in third place on the team’s all-time rushing list with 2,138 yards in his career. He is one of just four players in program history with more than 2,000 rushing yards and he finished his career with 23 touchdowns. Linebacker and two-time all-conference selection Mike MacDonald ‘13 is one of two players in team history with 300 or more career tackles, and Jordan Eck ‘13 ended up in third place on the Continentals’ all-time passing yards list with 4,948. Edwin Sweetland was one of the first men to walk the sidelines as head coach of the Continentals. Sweetland guided the program to an 8-2-1 record in 1899 and then was the head coach at Syracuse University the next three seasons. He came back to Hamilton to lead the team to a 6-3 record in 1903 before he moved on to Ohio State University, where he was the head coach in 1904 and 1905. He went on to be head coach at several other schools including Colgate University, the University of Kentucky, Miami University, West Virginia University, Tulane University and Alfred University. He was Kentucky’s first athletic director. Forest Evashevski guided the Continentals to a 5-2 record as head coach in 1941. Evashevski went on to lead Washington State University for two seasons and the University of Iowa for nine more. He coached Iowa to two Rose Bowl victories, and the Football Writers Association of America recognized the 1958 team as national champions. Former players have gone on to great things in the coaching ranks as well. Herb Hand ‘90 is the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Penn State. Sean Ryan ‘94 is the wide receivers coach in his eighth year on the staff of the NFL’s New York Giants. Joe Gilbert ‘87 is

10

the offensive line coach in his third year with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, and Tim Berbenich ‘02 is an offensive assistant with the Colts in his 11th year as an NFL coach. 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the lone unbeaten team in program history. The Continentals were 6-0-1 in 1958 as a 12-all tie with Hobart College was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season. Hamilton enjoyed eight straight winning seasons from 1960 to 1967. The 1963 team finished 7-1, which remains the highest number of victories in one season for the program since 1900. That 1900 squad ended up 8-1 and would have been undefeated and unscored upon if it weren’t for an 11-0 loss to West Point. In 1984, Steve Stetson guided the Continentals to a 6-1-1 record with the help of Associated Press Little All-America selections Seamus Crotty ‘86 and Mike Lentini ‘85. Hamilton finished with a winning record 10 times from 1985 through 1996.

Program Overview A total of 18 Continentals have earned 20 All-America selections since 1941. Running back Eric Grey ‘93 and offensive lineman Joe Gilbert were first team All-Americans in 1991 and 1986, respectively. Grey holds the school record for most rushing yards in a season. Jeff Hewitt ‘74 played 10 games for the Dallas Cowboys in 1974 after signing with the team as a free agent. Hewitt was an honorable mention All-America college division pick as a defensive lineman in 1973. Four members of Hamilton’s celebrated 2006 defense made the NESCAC all-conference team, including rookie of the year John Lawrence ‘10. Lawrence finished his career with three all-conference awards, including first team in 2009. The Continentals ranked seventh in NCAA Division III in scoring defense in 2006 with 10.3 points allowed per game. Hamilton blanked two teams that year and didn’t allow more than 20 points in any game. The last time the Continentals had more than four players recognized by the NESCAC in one year was 2001, when five were honored.

Led by all-conference defensive lineman Burke St. John ‘11, who was voted to the 2009 East Region’s allregion third team by D3football.com, Hamilton finished third in the NESCAC in pass defense (207 yards allowed per game) and fourth in total defense (330 yards allowed per game) in 2010. The Continentals tied for second in the conference with 20 sacks, and Jim Forrey ‘13 was a big reason why. Forrey led the NESCAC with seven sacks and 14 tackles for a loss. Academics play an important role within the program. Cory Glover ‘16, Jeff Jenkins ‘16, Simon Jia ‘16, Robert Miles ‘16 and Alex Mitko ‘16 earned spots on the 2013 NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team. Three players, including Pat Donahoe ‘16 last year, have made the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) academic all-district team since 2011. Ted Finan ‘12 and Jacob Sheetz-Willard ‘12 were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which is the nation’s oldest honor society, in 2012.

2014 Game Day Hamilton Football Alumni Network (FAN) Leadership Award

During halftime of today’s game, co-chairs of the Hamilton Football Alumni Network (FAN) Steve Kenny ‘69 P’07 and Jerry Pitarresi ‘71 P’08, P’10 and Director of Athletics Jon Hind ‘80 will present Hamilton assistant football coach Paul Adey with the FAN Leadership Award. The award is presented to a Hamilton alumnus, parent or friend who has made outstanding contributions and demonstrated dedication to the football program. After the game, a reception honoring Paul will be held in the Emerson Lobby of Alumni Gym at 4 p.m. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet Head Coach Dave Murray. Paul has coached at Hamilton College for 32 years. He has coached three All-Americans, 23 NESCAC all-conference selections and two conference most valuable players, two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) all-conference honorees and one ECAC player of the year. Paul was a member of the coaching staff in 1985 when the Continentals were ranked 20th in Division III at the end of the season. Paul currently works with the defensive line and is the athletic department’s strength and conditioning coordinator. He oversees all aspects of strength and conditioning for more than half of Hamilton’s 29 men’s and women’s varsity intercollegiate programs. Paul has worked with seven All-America athletes and two national champions. He was inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame during the 38th annual ceremony this past summer on July 27.

Hamilton College Football Sportsmanship Pledge During halftime of today’s game, Hamilton’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will announce the Hamilton football sportsmanship pledge, which will be read by three members of the women’s lacrosse team. As a scholar-athlete and representative of not only myself but of the Hamilton College football family, my family and the greater Hamilton community, I commit myself to adhere to the following tenets to help promote sportsmanship both on and off the field: • I will play with my heart and talk with my shoulder pads, refraining from derogatory comments towards opponents, officials, fans, coaches and teammates. • I will accept the outcome of each game and each practice regardless of how it aligns with my preferences, congratulating my opponents, being grateful for the opportunity to compete and perceiving instances of defeat as opportunities for improvement. • I will be relentless in the pursuit of success and when it comes I will accept it with humility and graciousness, knowing that success is more than what the scoreboard says. • I will respect my opponents, officials, fans, coaches, myself and teammates at all times. • I will play for the love of the game and will always give my full effort out of respect for the game, the opportunity I have to play it and those who join me in it.

About the NESCAC Founded in 1971, the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) is a group of eleven highly selective liberal arts colleges and universities that share a similar philosophy for intercollegiate athletics. The Conference was created out of a concern for the direction of intercollegiate athletic programs, and remains committed to keeping a proper perspective on the role of sport in higher education. The formation of NESCAC originated with an agreement among Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University and Williams College first drafted in 1955. Along with these four institutions, Bates College, Colby College, Hamilton College, Middlebury College, Trinity College and Tufts University are sustaining charter members. Connecticut College joined in 1982, bringing the Conference’s membership to its current total of 11 institutions. NESCAC members believe intercollegiate athletic programs should operate in harmony with the educational mission of each institution. The Conference is committed to establishing common boundaries to keep athletics strong but in proportion to the overall academic mission of the member institutions. In pursuit of this mission, the Presidents of each NESCAC institution control intercollegiate athletic policy. Conference tenets are usually more restrictive than those of the NCAA Division III with regard to season length, number of contests and post-season competition. NESCAC institutions also believe athletic teams should be representative of the entire student body. Thus, admissions and financial policies are consistent with the NCAA Division III policies that prohibit athletic scholarships and award financial aid solely on the basis of need. In 1999, the NESCAC formally became a playing conference and now sponsors 26 conference championship sports (13 for men and 13 for women). Member schools offer extensive and broad based intercollegiate as well as club and intramural opportunities for both men and women. With member institutions sponsoring an average of nearly 30 varsity programs, NESCAC provides more than 7,500 opportunities for participation in intercollegiate competition at the Division III level. Teams and individuals have achieved success on both a regional and national level. During the 2013-14 academic year, 53 teams participated in NCAA team championships. NESCAC studentathletes claimed 18 individual national championships and NESCAC teams won six national team championships. Milestones 1890 - A motion to organize a varsity football team at Hamilton passes by three votes. October 15, 1890 - Hamilton defeats the Syracuse Athletic Club 56-0 at Riverside Park in Utica in the school’s first varsity contest. 1899 - Hamilton plays a school-record 11game schedule and goes 8-2-1. One of the two losses comes at the hands of the famed Carlisle Indians, coached by the legendary Glenn “Pop” Warner. 1900 - The Continentals are ranked 10th in Walter Camp’s College Football Poll as they go 8-1, losing only to West Point. Army scores the only 11 points allowed by Hamilton’s defense all season. 1916 - Hamilton upsets Columbia, 14-7, with William M. Bristol, Jr. at quarterback. 1940 - Hamilton shuts out Union, 13-0, in the last game of Arthur Winters’ 14-year Hamilton coaching career. 1941 - Milt Jannone leads the East region with 16 touchdowns in seven games as the Continentals finish 5-2. 1948 - Donald M. Jones is hired as head coach, beginning a 28-year tenure that would be the longest in Hamilton history. 1958 - The Continentals blank Union, 18-0, behind Mike Slattery’s three touchdowns to cap a 6-0-1 campaign. It remains the only undefeated season in Hamilton history. 1963 - Hamilton goes 7-1 and is ranked No. 10 behind leader Delaware in the final Lambert Poll of Eastern schools. 1966 - Tackle John Siebert is named MVP of the ECAC’s newly formed Division III. 1967 - After losing their opener, the Continentals run off six straight victories with three shutouts and a 15-10 win against Union in the season finale.

1984 - Hamilton wins its last four games to finish 6-1-1 under head coach Steve Stetson. One of the great upsets in Hamilton history, a 10-3 defeat of undefeated and second-ranked Union, closes the year in front of 5,000 fans at Steuben Field. 1985 - Coach Steve Frank leads the Continentals to a 6-2 record and a No. 20 ranking in the NCAA Division III poll. 1986 - Jim Korfonta ties Milt Jannone for touchdowns in one season with 16. 1991 - The sixth-longest rivalry in college football ends when Hamilton loses to Union, 51-17. Eric Grey breaks Jim Korfonta’s single-season rushing record by running for 1,439 yards. 1996 - Quarterback Dan DeBlois and running back Scott Milleisen each break team records. Milleisen breaks Eric Grey’s rushing record with 2,640 yards on the ground, while DeBlois sets records for career and season completions and passing yardage in a season. Oct. 16, 2004 - QB Brandon Holtslag sets a NESCAC record with 509 total yards and ties a school record with four rushing TD’s in a 51-48 double OT victory vs. Bowdoin at Steuben Field. 2007 - Joe Rinaldo sets a school record with 138 career receptions.
