FALL 2013 Winchester Public Library

Research from Home or at the Library Writing A Paper? Buying a Car? Researching Stocks? Fall is upon us and it’s a great time to remind ourselves of the wonderful resources available in the form of databases at the library. Whether you are a student writing a research paper, a music lover who wants to download music for free, or perhaps planning a trip and want to learn a foreign language, library databases are a great place to start—and you can access most of this information in the privacy of your own home with a computer and your library card. I like to keep an index card in our home office with our library number and PIN so everyone in my family remembers to look there first before spending countless hours sifting through the internet.

Researching a database from the Library

What is a Library Database? Library Databases… • C ontain information from published works in which the facts have been checked, including magazine and newspaper articles, encyclopedias and other reference books. • O ften contain full-text articles that you can print or email. • A re searchable by Keywords, Subject, Author, Magazine Title, Date, etc.

Researching a database from home

• P rovide citation information: Author, Title, Publisher, and Date of Publication.

• E xamples include: Morningstar Investment Research Center, American History Online, A-Z Maps, Britannica Online, Consumer Reports Online, and many more!

• P rovide information that is not considered general “internet sources” and can usually be used for school reports.

• A re available to everyone in the library. If you have trouble with database access or use, please call the Reference Desk at 781-721-7171 x20.

From the Director . . . Our current fiscal year began July 1 and included funding for Saturday hours year-round. We are pleased to report that a total of 16,738 people visited our Library on Saturdays this summer. Our budget also includes funding to reduce our reliance on private donors for Sunday hours. After seven years of seeking private donations for Sunday hours, we will include Sunday hours in our annual fiscal budget. Rest assured, gifts we have received from generous individuals to fund Sunday hours will be used accordingly.

News from The Children’s Room Another magical Summer Reading Program with over 600 participants was bookended by two magicians this year. Magic Dave and his bunny Hocus kicked off “Dig Into Reading,” and magician Mike Bent fascinated everyone at the final party with his “Readers of the Lost Book.” The various programs highlighting our theme were well attended. Pumpernickel Puppets, “We Dig Dinosaurs” with Diane Edgecomb and all Kidstock programs in our Meeting Room were standing room only. Many sign-up programs had waiting lists. The Underground Animals Game created by Robert was a real treasure. Most of the children who registered played the game more than a half a dozen times each. Just imagine over 600 children pushing a button, and then trying to decide which of six underground animals to uncover in order to match the animal of the day. Now imagine each child doing this more than five times, hoping to win a prize by matching the right underground animal. It was a busy and surPRIZINGly satisfying summer!

In October you will see changes in our magazine and computer area. Reference materials have been relocated and more comfortable seating will be arriving. Another table is being added for desktop computers to provide more space for computer users. We are always striving to make your Library as welcoming and functional as possible. Be sure to visit our new website or stop by the Library. We have something for everyone. Guaranteed.

Free Music!

Freegal is a downloadable music service available to Winchester residents. All you need is your library card number. Freegal offers access to about 3 million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists.

A Message from the President of Friends Welcome to the Fall edition of Speaking Volumes, the Friends of the Winchester Public Library’s twice yearly newsletter providing information on what’s happening at the Library. We hope you will enjoy reading about the children’s summer program. Perhaps you will find a book group to join or a lecture to attend. We are very lucky to have an active and supportive Friends’ board. Our program committee, Jann Sheehy, Margaret Pulsifer, and Jeanne Joy, has an interesting and varied program of speakers this year beginning with “Drinking Boston: A History of the City and Its Spirits” on October 1. See the full schedule elsewhere in the newsletter.

In total the collection is comprised of music from over 10,000 labels with music that originates in over 60 countries. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. Winchester residents have a weekly limit of downloads.

I would like to thank all those who contributed to the Friends. Without your support, we would be unable to provide funding for the programs, materials and services that are outside the Library’s budget.

Go to winpublib.org, then eLibrary, then Digital Music.

Karen Martin President, Friends of the Winchester Public Library
