St. Agnes School: Lighting the Way as Peace Builders

“Peace be with you…” John 20:19 Dear Friends of St. Agnes School, Peace is a pervasive theme woven throughout the Gospels. In Luke’s telling of the birth of Jesus, a multitude of the heavenly host proclaim to the shepherds near Bethlehem, “Glory to God in high heaven and peace on earth to those on whom his favor rests.” After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the frightened apostles in the Upper Room and bestowed the gift of peace. Peace is God’s gift to us. Peace in the scriptures is more than calm and the absence of violence and confusion. Peace is God’s vision in everything that a person needs to be fully human. To wish God’s peace for another means a willingness to do what I can to bring that about, in other words, to be “peace builders.” In this issue of Spirit we wish to acknowledge and thank so many persons who have contributed to the 2010-2011 Annual School Fund. Your contributions enabled our school to install new playground equipment in the first phase of creating “PeaceBuilder’s Place”, a tribute to the PeaceBuilder’s Program that is part of our St. Agnes School atmosphere. Thank you so very, very much! And may the peace of the Lord be with you always! Blessings, Fr. Bob

Lighting the Way as PeaceBuilders

The theme for the 2010-2011 school year was “Let your light shine.” As you will see in this Newsletter, our student, staff and parent PeaceBuilders do, indeed, allow their light to shine for one another, for our community and for the world. I am very proud of all of these “PeaceBuilder” leaders! Thank you to all who share your support with our school community. You light the way as PeaceBuilders for Catholic education. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and treasure with us! For the 2011-2012 school year, our theme is “Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace.” As St. Agnes PeaceBuilders, we want, like Jesus, to reach out and touch the lives of others with the gift of PEACE. The St. Agnes PeaceBuilders’ Program is three years old. The goals of this program include: creating a healthy and safe environment conducive to learning, developing positive relationships, and teaching nonviolent attitudes, values and beliefs. Are not these the Gospel values that our Catholic schools teach? Is this not what we pray when we sing: “Make me a channel of Your peace; where there is hatred, let me bring Your love; where there is injury Your pardon, Lord.” You are invited to join our St. Agnes students, staff and parents as we daily pledge to be PeaceBuilders…

I am a PeaceBuilder. I Pledge… -To praise people -To give up put-downs -To seek wise people -To notice and speak up about hurts I have caused -To right wrongs -To help others I will build peace at home, at school and in My community each day.

Wishing you peace, Sr. Joan

Second Grade First Eucharist

After many months of preparation and study, the St. Agnes Second Grade and PSR Students participated in receiving their First Eucharist on April 3rd. Personal banners representing what the sacrament meant to each student graced the Gathering Space. The new communicants led their families, relatives and friends beautifully, in prayer, as they all gathered to celebrate this sacrament.

Oklahoma where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain... The Jr. High performance of Oklahoma enjoyed four showings, with one of those being a sold out dinner theater catered by Texas RoadHouse. The proceeds from the dinner theater went to two different missions: Global Brigade in Honduras which is a medical mission that St. Agnes alumnus, Jessica Taylor is involved with and the Holy Childhood Association. Mrs. Cour and the students worked very hard crafting their performance and it was evident in every show. They took one of their performances on the road down the street to the Sacred Heart Convent Motherhouse where their talents really shined due to limited props and no stage. Hats off to a fine performance by the St. Agnes sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

May Crowning

The eighth grade and first grade students led the May Crowning for the St. Agnes student body and faculty. At the end of the May Crowning ceremony, the eighth graders received their class ribbons which were pinned into place on their sleeves by their teachers, Ms. Harris and Ms. Rang. The ribbon symbolizes their many achievements and approaching graduation.

Hanging with Sr. Joan “Principal for the day” and “Lunch with the Principal” again made for some lively bidding at the St. Agnes Auction. There were two winners of “Principal for the day”, John Schmidt and Nicole Swehla. Each experienced a day as principal visiting classrooms and “working” alongside Sr. Joan during a “typical” school day. Matthew, Tucker and Beth Von Behren were delighted to have “Lunch with the Principal”. They were able to leave the St. Agnes campus with Sr. Joan for lunch at a destination of their choice-McDonalds!

St. Agnes School 2010-2011 Annual Fund Donors The 2010-2011 goal for the Annual Fund was $77,000. Thanks to your generous support, we met this goal. I am grateful for all your gifts of time, prayers and financial commitment that keep the Spirit of St. Agnes alive. Thank you for being a light that shines for our St. Agnes children and for supporting St. Agnes’ mission of Catholic Education. Our St. Agnes students and staff hold you in our daily prayers. Wishing you God’s love, grace and light. Gratefully, Sr. M. Joan Sorge, O.P. Saying “Goodbye” to St. Agnes PeaceBuilders Mrs. Lyn Drainer’s name is synonymous with commitment, not only to her 3rd grade classes that she has taught over 24 years but to the whole school. Mrs. Drainer has been a regular at many school activities throughout the years. She has been the faculty liaison with Parents’ Club and a member of the MAGIC Match committee. Mrs. Drainer’s love for reading is a trait that she has passed on to many of her students throughout her years at St. Agnes. She also has been an integral part of the “Read-In” that is enjoyed by students third through eighth grade during Catholic Schools Week. When the Shurley English program was introduced at St. Agnes, Mrs. Drainer rose to the occasion. Her enthusiasm for the program was an inspiration to the rest of the faculty. Mrs. Drainer’s talent for bringing out the best in her students is a blessing that we will all miss. Mrs. Drainer received the “Crystal Apple” award from Horace Mann in honor of her years of teaching.

Mrs. Jackie Hartman knew that she wanted to be a first grade teacher since the time she finished second grade. Mrs. Hartman was very committed to her first grade students. During her 24 years, she always made it a point to reach out and call every student’s parents during the first two months of school. She was an active member of the M.A.G.I.C. Match committee and served as a part of the Late Day Administration staff. Mrs. Hartman plans to enjoy more time with her husband and visiting her sons. She will also be cheering her favorite team the “Fighting Illini” to victory. Mrs. Hartman kept her faith growing by being a part of the faculty “Why Catholic” group. She shared her faith with her “little ones” through her love of Bible stories. Mrs. Hartman was awarded the “Crystal Apple” from Horace Mann for all her work in the classroom.

Mrs. Johanna Grandchamp came to St. Agnes a little over four years ago. She was the 7th grade Homeroom teacher, the 7th and 8th grade Math teacher and 7th grade Religion teacher. During her years here at St. Agnes, Mrs. Grandchamp was the coordinator of Math Counts and during the last two years also served as the faculty coordinator of Scholastic Bowl. Mrs. Grandchamp was also involved in the faculty and staff “Why Catholic” group. She was an avid sports fan and was in attendance at many Jr. High games with her family. When asked about the students at St. Agnes, Mrs. Grandchamp commented that she always enjoyed seeing the difference in the students’ behavior from inside to outside of the classroom. Mrs. Grandchamp said she would miss the camaraderie of the faculty but she looks forward to being able to spend more time with her family.

Ms. Ashley Levan, joined the St. Agnes staff this time last fall and students welcomed her to our school community and now we are saying “Goodbye”. In just one year, Ms. Levan was a very strong presence at St. Agnes as she gave guidance to individual students and classes. She showed a deep understanding for students but also challenged them as they grew. Her guidance will be missed. We wish her continued success as she embarks on her educational journey for a PhD at Brigham Young University.

Eighth Grade The 2010-2011 school year was a busy one for all of the eighth grade students at St. Agnes. There were many hours of studying, tests and paper writing, service hours fulfilled and extracurricular activities. Confirmation was celebrated on April 1, with Bishop Thomas John Paprocki conferring this Sacrament. After receiving their ribbons during the May Crowning, the eighth graders returned to St. Agnes school that night for the fourth annual lock-in. The evening’s events allowed the students to share memories, reflect on their time at St. Agnes, and look ahead to high school. Energy was plentiful throughout the night and into the next morning. No Sleep! The eighth grade joined together to dedicate a bookcase for their fellow classmate Evan Hoffman. Jeff and Myra Hoffman also joined in the dedication and donated several books from Evan’s own personal library. The bookcase and reading nook are now part of the St. Agnes Library for all students to enjoy. Graduation activities included an eighth grade dance on May 13th, planned by the Room Parents. Sr. Joan joined the future graduates in a well deserved Pepsi Pause with the Principal. This “Pepsi Pause” is a time for Sr. Joan to talk with and listen to the eighth grade about issues that are important to them and provides an avenue for them to relay their thoughts and feelings on their experience and suggest improvements at St. Agnes. The eighth grade breakfast on May 17th welcomed the 2011 class into the St. Agnes Alumni community. An awards ceremony on May 18th awarded the students for all of their hard work and dedication to their studies and extra-curricular activities. A Graduation Mass was celebrated in the evening with Fr. Bob followed by the presentation of diplomas. The newly graduated students returned to St. Agnes the next day to board a bus to take them on their much anticipated class trip to St. Louis. St. Agnes wishes all the new alumni blessings on their future journeys.

evanwalk On Sunday, May 1, over 500 people gathered at Lincoln Park in Springfield for evanwalk, to remember and celebrate Evan Hoffman on his 14th birthday. Evan would have been an 8th grader at St. Agnes School last year, but passed away after a 2-year battle with cancer in June 2010. Many St. Agnes students, faculty and parish families were among those gathered for the walk, picnic and balloon release. Fr. Bob provided a special blessing, and Sr. Joan did the honors of picking the winning 50/50 raffle ticket. The event raised more than$17,000 for the Evan Hoffman Children’s Fund at St. John’s Children’s Hospital.

MAGIC Match and Leadership Donors Appreciation Dinner The St. Agnes M.A.G.I.C. Match Program Sponsors and Annual Fund Leadership Donors enjoyed a “Cinco De Mayo” appreciation dinner. The appreciation dinner recognizes those for their generous financial gifts to both our M.A.G.I.C. Match program and to the St. Agnes Annual Fund. Chris Sommer (Harper Oil) was the 2010-2011 recipient for the Children’s Awards. The Children’s Award recognizes the continued exemplary contributions of our time-honored M.A.G.I.C. Match supporters.

Parish Picnic- “Party with the Pope” Why wait to celebrate…that was the thinking for this year’s St. Agnes Parish picnic. Many parishioners and school families enjoyed the picnic. The highlight was honoring Mr. Pope for all he has done over the years. Les Pope was not retiring but the Parish wanted to recognize him for all his years of service to the St. Agnes Parish and school community. Mr. Pope started working for St. Agnes in 1989. He has tirelessly, and faithfully, maintained the church, rectory and school buildings. He also has taken care of the grounds, mowing in the hot, hot summers and plowing in the frigid winters. Thank you for all you do for us here at St. Agnes, Mr. Pope! We are blessed!

Young at Heart (YAH) It's been an active year for the “Young at Heart” group at St. Agnes.  Since September of 2010, they have enjoyed four potlucks, four Grapevine Socials, held a Games Day, a Health Fair and a Blood Drive.  YAH also took two trips, one in December to Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville to see the Christmas lights. A second trip was in April to the Conklin Barn II Dinner Theater to enjoy a prime rib buffet dinner prior to a hilarious comedy “Run for Your Wife”. A full bus of 56 people made the trip. Everyone in the group was “Young at Heart” ranging in age from mid forties to late eighties. The trip was successful in bringing a divergent group of parishioners together for a fun event.  Additionally, YAH members went to the Muni as a group to see Guys and Dolls in July.  Many more activities are planned for this coming year.

“Moving On!” May 20th was a big day in the lives of some “little people” here at St. Agnes School. This day marked the end of preschool and the beginning of new experiences for many. Parents, grandparents and special people filled the seats of the gym to watch the preschoolers perform many of the things they had learned throughout the school year. The program was accented with the “Days of the Week” song, a song about Noah’s Ark and the PeaceBuilder’s Pledge. The pledge is said by the whole student body together every school day during Morning Prayer. The program was completed with Sr. Joan giving the preschool students their “Moving On” certificates.

Elegant Event

The St. Agnes Kindergarten classes came dressed in their finest and used their best manners for the fourth Annual Elegant Event. Young gentlemen escorted young ladies to have their pictures taken and then returned to their respective classrooms for an elegant sit-down lunch complete with dessert followed by dancing a waltz. The children practiced their manners and money counting skills as they ordered their dining fare from parent waiters and waitresses. The theme of this year’s Learning Fair was The students discovered that it can be fun to get Reading. A stage presentation of “The dressed up and use their manners.

Bookworm” was presented by the third graders and their teachers. The students and their families were invited to tour the school to partake in the many classroom activities. A special thank you to the Reading Committee, whose initiation of the “Family Projects” enlivened the halls with posters, t-shirts and dioramas depicting a favorite family book.
