REUNIONS CELEBRATED

Class of 1954 - 55th Year Reunion- April 19, 2009 Left to Right / Row 1—Dolores Markech, Gloria Teeling Hagstrom, Catharine Palcer Campe, Margaret Grealish Mathes, Barbara McClure Mette, Patricia Doherty MacFarlan, Sharon Thiel Czopek, Mary Ann Prosniewski Michels, Patricia Lakota Apida, Standing: Mary Ellen Poland, Kathleen Donohoe, Pat Rahling Finkler, Joanne Posch Wagner, Donna Bartmann Zwofler, Helen Marie Hart, Marilyn Schiffli Raczka, Frances Smyth Eraci, Patricia Logue Coyne

CLASS OF 1959 CELEBRATES!!!!! Can’t you just picture it...115 Happy Women….some of whom hadn’t seen one another for FIFTY YEARS?! The joy in the room was palpable as the Class of 1959 met again on April 18th at the Itasca Country Club (a last-minute venue since our original club burned down...hence the pictures of our committee with the firemen hats.. “just in case”). Alumnae came from all over Illinois as well as California, Washington, Oklahoma, Florida, Arkansas, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York, New Mexico, Arizona, North Carolina, Hawaii, and Canada! It was definitely a tribute to our teachers and to one another. Some alumnae who couldn’t attend sent great notes to wish us well. Tables were set with our class flowers (yellow roses) and a special bookmark as well as a directory (with Carolyn Warzecha Guerra’s artwork from 1959) and finally, a World’s Finest Chocolate Bar (reminding us of the frenzied drive to sell them in our sophomore year). We heard a Glee Club CD of The St. Francis Prayer for Peace and sang our school song together one more time. The Spirit of ‘59 flourished! The next day most of us (plus a few people who could not make the day before), met at the annual luncheon at the Stephens Convention Center where Sister Barbara Kraemer, one of our finest, was the featured speaker. She gave a lovely tribute to all Alvernia alums and surprised Nancy Strumin Sugrue with special notice; the speech is printed elsewhere in this newsletter. (Page 22) Continued on page 11

50th Reunion—Class of 1959 The goal of the reunion was to renew friendships (we did) and to raise money for the retired sisters (we did that too)!!! Check our “Photo Album” on www.alverniaalumnae.org where you will see many of the same pictures but they will be in living color and be sure to have your sound turned up so you can hear the strains of our school song again.

CLASS OF 1949—60TH REUNION Photos on Page 24

Dear 49ers,

In this issue of Alvernia Alive are a few candids from Alvernia’s 17th Annual Luncheon at which our class celebrated its 60th Reunion. The luncheon is such a busy time with the raffle decisions we need to make that we thought it might be better to meet in a more private and relaxed setting where we could visit with one another. So, the previous night we had a smaller group, some of whom could not attend the luncheon or were from out-of-town, meet for dinner at the Hilton Garden Inn in Des Plaines. A few of us stayed overnight. At both events we all shared a warm, loving and fun experience. Thanks to all for being there. I appreciated all your notes and calls thanking me for my efforts in making the reunion a success. That success was achieved with the cooperation of many classmates. My sincerest thanks to: Shirley Tyler Denz and her daughter Donna who created and made our bookmarks, Gerre Holzmacher Twohey who opened her home to us for our meetings, Donna Severa Schmidt who offered bookmark ideas and sent photos to many, Pat Seng McCue who provided the poster pictures, Jackie Smith Rowan from Michigan who brought special treats for after dinner (chocolate covered cherries and chocolate dipped strawberries and more), Nancy Verville, Priscilla Warner Dohrmann and Marge Severa Steinkuller who offered ideas, and encouragement and financial support from many. We had a really good time with plenty of laughs. Try to join us the next time we get together. It may be sooner than the usual five year interval. Noreen Sennis Kobos, Class Rep 1949

The Class of 1969 decided to make our reunion more than just a meeting at the annual luncheon. So we gathered the Saturday evening before at Gino’s East on Higgins (you may remember it as the Rusty Scupper). We had a wonderful time laughing, crying and reminiscing with each other. Besides the “regulars”, we had some “girls” attend whom we had not seen since graduation day. It was spectacular. We had put together poster boards of our prom bids, school play bills and even our official photo from our 20th reunion (what a great turnout we had then). Marlene Omura Krick (our official artsy person) made a banner—Looking back over 40 years—and took photos from our yearbook and enlarged them. We all met again on Sunday at the luncheon and vowed that we would not wait 5 years to get together again. Our email address book is growing, so if you are reading this and have not been getting email updates, please send your email address to our Class Rep, Petty Heinrich Arvanites at [email protected]. You’d hate to miss our next get-together. We really have a great time!!!! Add’l pictures on pg 27

KEEP THE MAIL COMING

you do with our Alvernia Alive. It means so very much to all of us; special thanks for the fantastic job and generous space you gave to our 50th class reunion. For those who attended it’s another souvenir, for those who missed it hopefully it will motivate them to pay their dues and try to attend our luncheons and reunions in the future. Our spirit is so contagious!”

Armella Dapper Slaton ‘36, Phoenix AZ “ Thank you (Barb) and all of the Alumnae officers and other volunteers. Thank you too for keeping the Spirit of Alvernia alive. At age 90, I continually appreciate being in contact from a distance and grateful for my Alvernia education.”

Marcy Hammes Mueller ‘61 “Once again you and your committee did a fabulous job with the luncheon. Thank you!”

Mervyne Hinske O’Connor ‘38, Silver Spring, MD, “ So sorry I could not get to your Alvernia get-together. I know you all had a great time and that it was a fun affair. As a graduate of the 1938 class, am afraid a lot of us were not there. My two sisters, Elaine and Loleita were both graduates of Alvernia and are now deceased. God Bless and Love.”

Barbara Henneman Koch ‘62, Cincinnati, OH, “Thank you for sending my winning dues raffle check. I only wish that I had been at the luncheon—so exciting to win something! I’ve enclosed a check for the same amount for the alumnae association. I’m sure that it can be put to good use. Hope to see you next year at the luncheon.”

Lorette Dorsch Schenning ‘40, Fairhope AL, “ I am disappointed that no one has steped up to become the 1940’s rep. I have not been to a Luncheon since our 50th anniversary but I look forward to Alvernia Alive to catch up on the news of all classes. I know it is difficult to fill Cecile Lamberty’s shoes, but I pray we still have an energetic classmate who is willing to volunteer.”

Susan Bouzide,’65, Chicago, IL , “I seem to miss a lot of events that occur between March and June (luncheon) because that’s my busiest time at work with fundraisers. I’m the program coordinator and also am responsible for raising all the funds for West Side Mentally Retarded Children’s Aid. Somehow, our Alvernia upbringing and events keep me grounded and I truly appreciate receiving the newsletter and attending whatever events I am able.”

Lorraine Ellsworth Fulton ‘45, Midlothian, VA, “Thank you for all the time you dedicate to keep this Alumnae Association going; I very certainly appreciate it!” Rosalie Kautenberger Venturini ‘48, Eureka, CA I have fond memories of my years at Alvernia and the wonderful education and much more that I received there. I will never forget Alvernia. Jean Gibson Archer ‘49, Shelbyville, KY, “Thanks for all your hard work in keeping the Alvernia Spirit Alive!!”

Renee Kujawski Bauemfeind ‘70. Sturgeon Bay, WI, “Wish I could make it for the luncheon—one of these days I’ll be in Chicago when something is going on. The really ironic thing is that until we moved to Sturgeon Bay, we lived at Touhy and Maple in Des Plaines for 10 years—I could have walked to the luncheons!”
