Faculty and Staff Academic Faculty (Instructional and Research): In comparison to Fall 2009, full-time academic faculty has increased by 0.8%, and part-time faculty increased by 5.6% (Table 6.1). Overall, the number of academic faculty has increased by 2.8%, excluding the graduate assistants (Table 6.1). Administrative Faculty and Support Staff: The number of administrative faculty and support staff increased 6.1% when compared to Fall 2009; the number of administrative faculty increased by 3.8% and the number of classified staff increased 7.2% (Table 6.1). Under Represented Faculty and Staff: Of the total 5,646 faculty and staff employed by Mason, 1,057 identify themselves as racial/ethnic minorities (18.7%) (Table 6.3). This does not include the 521 non-resident aliens and the 393 in the “Unknown” category. Women represent 40.7% of the full-time instructional faculty and 33.8% of the full-time research faculty. Age and Years of Service of Instructional Faculty: The average years of service by instructional faculty for Fall 2010 are 11.2 years (Table 6.4). The average age of instructional faculty is 50.3 years for Fall 2010 (Table 6.4). Over half (53.0%) of professors are age 60 or older and more than a quarter (25.9%) of all faculty are 60 or older, suggesting that Mason can expect considerable turnover in the near term. Faculty Salary: The average salary for Mason’s full-time instructional faculty ($89,901) increased by 1% over the Fall 2009 average. The changes are primarily due to promotions, new hires and departures (Table 6.5). Using Fall 2009 data, Mason’s appropriated faculty salary was at the 27th percentile of its peer group salaries (Table 6.8). Mason’s appropriated salary used to calculate its percentile rank does not include the 8.57% cost of living adjustment (COLA) made by the state in 1989. Tables in this section present a comprehensive report on university staffing, and detailed information on our instructional faculty.

TABLE 6.8 George Mason University Peer Average Faculty Salaries in 2008-09

Mason’s peer institutions are used as a benchmark for establishing faculty salaries by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). The state “Conventional Goal” is to reach the 60th percentile of the salaries of our peer institutions. In 2009, Mason’s average faculty salary was at the 27th percentile within its peer group. The salary used for Mason is its appropriated salary without the 8.57% cost of living adjustment (COLA) made by the state in 1989.
