Description of Drug A synthetic ‘cannabis/skunk like’ product, available from head shops and websites.

Marketing Packaging ‘Kanna’ product is sold in a green packaging (see images section), which seems most prevalent in the UK.

Physical Description of Drug Light green buds/herbal matter. No stalks or leafs, although the occasional very small red seed has been seen. The bag when sniffed has a solvent/chemical smell inside, but there is not a strong smell on the actual buds and not a strong smell when smoked.

Distribution Quantities Black Mamba sold in 1 and 3 gram packages. 1 gram = £10, 3 grams = £25 from head shops and on the net. This is for the ‘Kanna’ product in the green packaging (see images section), which seems most prevalent in the UK.

Chemical Composition 1-(5-fluoropentyl)-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole, Oleamide, oleic acid amide, 9-octadecenamide; 9,10octadecenoamide

Chemical Analysis AM-2201; CANNABIS RECEPTOR AGONIST 1-(5-fluoropentyl)-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole is one of a number of novel cannabinoids covered in a US patent application filed by Alexandros Makriyannis (hence the AM- prefix) in 2004, and approved in 2007.Structurally it bears a close resemblence to the more frequently reported cannabinoid JWH-018. The only difference is that the pentyl chain emerging from the tertiary amine in JWH-018 is substituted with a fluoropentyl chain. It is sold as a designer drug but is not controlled in the UK. OLEAMIDE: NATURAL PRODUCT Oleamide, oleic acid amide, 9-octadecenamide; 9,10-octadecenoamide is an amide of the fatty acid oleic acid. It is an endogenous substance that occurs naturally in the body of animals. It induces sleep in animals and is being studied as a potential medical treatment for mood and sleep disorders, and cannabinoid-regulated depression.

Testing Results Contained AM-2201 and Oleamide.

Testing Sample Quantity 1x1 gram bag

Route of Administration Can apparently be smoked in a bong or joint.

Patterns of Use Similar to drugs such as cannabis.

Addictive Potential Several reported it being very ‘more-ish’ and resulting in them swapping a cannabis habit for a ‘Black Mamba’ one. “It is as addictive as cannabis”

Harm Reduction Information Try a small test amount and wait two hours before taking any more Avoid mixing with other substances and alcohol Control quantities they take in one session Consider consuming orally rather than nasally as many users report that snorting is painful If snorting, clean out nose after use and use own tooter-don’t share with anyone else! Try not to use alone and tell friends what they are taking Avoid if they have any history of mental health issues Carry condoms/dams and practice safer sex Seek help from medical support if they experience any negative side effects

Treatment Organisations We would advise anyone experiencing issues from Black Mamba or other similar substances to seek medical support via their GP or NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24. If you require more information or support regarding a drug issue or information about legal high training please contact staff at Crew on 0131 220 3404 or you can visit the crew website www.crew2000.org.uk

Cost per Quantity Black Mamba sold in 1 and 3 gram packages. 1 gram = £10, 3 grams = £25 from head shops and on the net. This is for the ‘Kanna’ product in the green packaging (below), which seems most prevalent in the UK.

Information from Drug Services 3 DrugWatch reports all from experienced cannabis users received so far. Two from Manchester and the incident that led to the hospital admission from North Tyneside. All the reports taken by drug workers/researchers from users. Summary of reports: First use: All used the ‘Kanna’ green packaged product. All brought from head shops. All reports say the product was smoked, either with tobacco or tobacco and cannabis resin in a joint or in a bong. All respondents assumed the product was a legal skunk like product and all at first took a ‘skunk like’ dosage. All state they were surprised by potency, “it was ‘much stronger than skunk”. All report ‘instant’ intense high. This was reportedly like very strong skunk, but somehow very

different. “Like smoking weed without the sunshine feeling”. Visual distortions and ‘morphing hallucinations’ were reported to occur within minutes. ‘It took me to a very uncomfortable place where I didn’t want to be”. There were several reports of vomiting (see below for A & E report). Several reports of people falling over or losing control of parts of there body. “I lost control of my legs – it was like being tipped out of a wheelchair”. It was also reported cause breathing difficulties and a very tight feeling in the chest, like the lungs were pumped up. The above effects lasted for half an hour or so before the more desirable cannabis like effects were experienced (relaxation, flights of ideas, appreciation of music, making the world seem a little less dull etc). Effects wore off after 11/2 to 2 hours. With some feeling tired and a bit jittery, while others report it had no after effects at all. Regular use: The distortions in reality reported seemed to occur regularly, although not necessarily every time the product was smoked. There was some uncertainty whether tolerance occurred or you just became more familiar with the effects. Although the hallucinations and distorted reality were seen as an unwanted side effect, the strength, price and ease of purchase meant it was used regularly. Several reported it being very ‘more-ish’ and resulting in them swapping a cannabis habit for a ‘Black Mamba’ one. “It is as addictive as cannabis”

Information from Medical Services A drug worker took this report directly from a client after he was hospitalized. The worker has also checked with the staff at the support lodgings where he was living to confirm details of this incident. One young man took the drug for the first time with a group of friends. The drug was smoked in a bong. Several of the friends vomited and ‘lost control of bits their body’, while one reported ‘schitzed out a bit’, although only one was taken to hospital. “For the first couple of minutes I was sweating a lot my head was pounding I had proper bloodshot eyes and was talking loads [asked by worker whether it felt similar to stimulant and he said that it was at first] After two minutes my throat started swelling up and I couldn’t breathe. You couldn’t touch my skin it felt horrible and really hurt to touch. My skin came out in a rash there was red blotches everywhere. It felt like my body was shutting down, my lungs were getting bigger and bigger and it felt like my body was going to explode. I fell on the floor and vomited everywhere and couldn’t stop being sick. I was twitching and I couldn’t control my body. I can remember everything – I could hear everything but couldn’t control my body.” The young man was taken to A and E, then released the following morning. Later on in the afternoon he again found extreme difficulty in breathing and was again admitted to hospital. Support lodgings staff report that he had been given adrenaline, Amoxicillin and Piriton. The young man was released from hospital and reports it took a week before he felt normal again.
