Coffeehouse to celebrate “the People of México” Ambos partidos eluden debate sobre la inmigración CLEVELAND: On Friday, June 13, the Inter Religious Task Force on Central America (IRTF ) invites the public to a coffeehouse entitled: “A Call to Solidarity.” This is an evening of music, photography, poetry, education and action for the people of México. This event is timely because the U.S. Congress is currently considering a shift in policy direction by voting on the Merida Initiative (“Plan México”), which would give millions of tax dollars in military aid for the “the war on drugs.” The North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has caused hardship for working families in both Mexico and the United States. In February, tens of thousands of Mexican farmers marched four miles to protest the lifting of the last tariffs on corn, beans, sugar, and milk. An expected import surge of U.S. corn syrup will likely hurt México’s largest remaining agricultural industry— sugar—that employs 2.5 million people. This could cause a new wave of immigrants seeking work in the U.S., like the well docu-

mented migration surge caused by post-NAFTA U.S. export dumping of yellow corn into México. In the United States, over one million textile and apparel industry jobs have been lost since NAFTA went into effect 14 years ago. NAFTA has cost Ohio about 50,000 jobs, mostly manufacturing, ranking the state fifth in NAFTA job losses. Free trade agreements have become a highly debated issue during this U.S. presidential campaign season—both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have stated that NAFTA should be re-examined. Last December, U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur (OH-9) introduced legislation that would require the U.S. to renegotiate NAFTA. The legislation is co-sponsored by other northern Ohio congressional representatives, including Reps. Kucinich, Ryan, and Sutton. Over the past few years, several Clevelanders have traveled to communities in México impacted by military violence and losses due to trade. Hiram College student Elisa Bredendiek, who spent the last 3 months in México studying social analysis, immigration, US

intervention, and indigenous social movements, will share her experiences on June 13, 2008. According to organizers, the coffeehouse will be a great opportunity for local people to better understand U.S. – México relations and learn how to support the people of Mexico. EVENT: A Call to Solidarity: A coffeehouse for the people of México DATE: Friday, June 13, 2008 TIME: 7:00 - 10:00pm ADMISSION: Gratis but donations are appreciated. LOCATION: St. Paul Community Church, 4427 Franklin Blvd., Cleveland 44113 IRTF will share a portion of the proceeds with Dignidad y Justicia (Dignity & Justice), a workerowned ethical clothing company run by women who organize other women working in sweatshops throughout the northern Mexico border region.www.cfo maquiladoras.org/ english%20site/ about_dignidad_ yjusticia.en.html

Average Michigan gas prices up 3 cents to $4.09 a gallon DETROIT, June 9, 2008 (AP): AAA Michigan says gas prices rose 3 cents during the past week, putting the statewide average at $4.09 a gallon. AAA Michigan says Monday that of the cities it surveys the cheapest price for self-serve regular fuel is in the Benton Harbor and Lansing/East

Lansing areas, where a gallon costs $4.07. The highest average can be found in the Marquette and Traverse City areas at $4.15 per gallon. Detroit-area drivers are paying $4.08. The statewide average for biodiesel is $4.77 and $3.54 for ethanol. AAA Michigan surveys 2,800 Michigan gas

Obama to campaign in Michigan for 3rd time in a month DETROIT, June 9, 2008 (AP): Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will hold a campaign stop and a fundraiser in Detroit on June 16. A spokeswoman for the Illinois senator made the announcement on Sunday.

Report: Detroit mayor’s friend gets $109M in water contracts DETROIT, June 9, 2008 (AP): A newspaper reports a longtime friend of embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

has received $109 million in contracts from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department with Kilpatrick in office. An analysis of records obtained by The Detroit News under the Freedom of Information Act and published Monday finds Ferguson’s share of department contracts has risen more than 20-fold since Kilpatrick took office in 2002. A message seeking comment from a lawyer for Ferguson was left before

business hours Monday by The Associated Press. Kilpatrick’s office says the mayor doesn’t have influence over awarding water contracts. Department spokesman George Ellenwood says Ferguson has not received preferential treatment. The department serves about 4 million people in southeast Michigan. Thunderstorms blamed for at least 6 deaths By JIM IRWIN Associated Press Writer DETROIT, June 9, 2008 (AP): Intense storms that battered Michigan’s Lower Peninsula were blamed for the deaths of at least six people, widespread property damage and the loss of electrical service to more than 515,000 homes and businesses. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings Sunday for a dozen counties scattered across the peninsula, but all had expired by 6 p.m. There were no reports of funnel cloud touchdowns, but winds of up to 80 mph toppled power lines and trees up to two feet in diameter, the weather service said. Flood warnings remained in effect early Monday for much of western Lower Michigan. Two people delivering newspapers for The Grand Rapids Press drowned after the road beneath their car collapsed and it plunged into a ravine near Saugatuck. Two other people were killed by falling trees, a man apparently drowned while tending to a dam and a woman died when high winds blew a recreational vehicle on top of her, authorities said. The newspaper delivery persons died about 4 a.m. Sunday in Allegan County’s Saugatuck Township, about 40 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and 160 miles west of Detroit. Both victims lived in Grand Junction, said state police Lt. Dave Greydanus. He identified them as Clarissa J. Green, 51, and her 17-yearold nephew, Dean A. Taylor. A thunderstorm that dumped more than 5 inches of rain in some areas Saturday night caused the road to wash out and collapse under the weight of the car, which fell 40 to 50 feet to the bottom of a ravine, killing both victims instantly, authorities said. The newspaper said Green’s son-in-law, Larry Huff, is a contractor who delivers newspaper bundles for other carriers and also has his own delivery route. Green was WE DO WHOLESALE !

delivering newspapers for Huff’s route, the Press said. “We deeply regret the deaths of family members of one of our delivery contractors this morning,” said the newspaper’s publisher, Dan Gaydou. “Carriers and delivery agents are diligent about fulfilling their commitments and are often faced with difficult weather situations.” In Eaton County, a woman was killed when high winds blew a recreational vehicle over and on top of her about 4 p.m. in Delta Township, about five miles west of downtown Lansing, Sheriff Mike Raines told the Lansing State Journal. No other information was immediately available. In Conklin, Ursula Swidewinski, 53, was killed at 2:20 p.m. when a tree fell on her as she went to secure her pole barn in the community about 15 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, Ottawa County sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Garvelink told the Grand Rapids newspaper. Elsewhere in Ottawa County, sheriff’s divers found the body of 76-yearold John Pekich of West Olive downstream from the Worley Drain Dam in Robinson Township. Pekich was known for tending the dam and probably was doing so when he fell into the fastmoving waters, the department said. In Spring Lake, a motorist died when a tree limb fell on his car shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, The Muskegon Chronicle reported. WOODTV in Grand Rapids identified him as 26-year-old Chad

Duchane. CMS Energy Corp.’s Consumers Energy unit said about 115,000 out of more than 300,000 customers affected by storms that first hit the area Friday remained without power early Monday. Hardest hit were the Kalamazoo and Lansing areas, with 15,600 and 13,000 customers, respectively, without service. DTE Energy Co.’s Detroit Edison unit said about 136,000 of about 200,000 affected customers were without service as of 10 p.m. Sunday, including 78,000 in Oakland County. Spokesman Scott Simons said power probably wouldn’t be fully restored until sometime Tuesday. About 15,500 Lansing Board of Water and Light customers were without power Sunday afternoon, spokesman Mark Nixon told the State Journal. Crews had restored service to all but 5,800 of the 19,000 customers who lost power Saturday before Sunday’s storms hit, he said. The storms struck on the 55th anniversary of the deadliest tornado in Michigan history. The June 8, 1953, tornado that struck the northern Flint community of Beecher and left a 23-mile path of destruction killed 116 people and injured another 844 along its path.

TARPS provides services to the mobility challenged Transit services for persons with disabilities will soon be handled directly by the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority. TARTA’s Board of Trustees voted on June 5, 2008 to bring the operation of the Toledo Area Regional Paratransit Service directly under TARTA’s control, ending a 19-year operational relationship with what is now known as First Transit, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio. “TARTA is taking this action to improve both service and accountability to the hundreds of mobilitychallenged riders who depend on TARPS to move freely within our service area and to reduce TARPS’ operating costs,” said James K. Gee, TARTA’s general manager. “We promise to make the changeover from First Transit to TARTA as seamless and uneventful as possible.” TARTA officially takes

complete control of TARPS on September 30. Currently, First Transit operates TARPS under contract with TARTA. The paratransit system is housed in a rented facility with all TARPS personnel employed by First Transit. First Transit is responsible for scheduling TARPS. TARTA provides the funding for TARPS and owns the scheduling system and the specially designed vehicles. After September 30, TARPS operations will function out of TARTA’s Central Ave. headquarters. Changes and upgrades to TARPS will include the following: new scheduling software will be implemented; TARPS will operate out of its own TARTA-owned facility; TARPS riders will be surveyed periodically about their satisfaction with the service; and to decrease no-shows, the length of time rides can be scheduled in advance will be reduced.

At its May meeting, TARTA’s Board voted to purchase new scheduling software for TARPS. The updated software will feature new maps and is expected to improve the quality of TARPS service. The updated software will be installed beginning next week with implementation expected before the end of August. TARPS new facility continues moving forward. Environmental studies are concluding at the planned location, near the railroad station at 300 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in south Toledo. Design work is expected to begin shortly. According to Gee, “TARPS ridership continues to show increased usage. TARPS recorded a 6.6 percent increase, going from 11,060 in May 2007 to 11,794 in May 2008.” TARTA can be contacted by calling 419-243-RIDE (7433) or visiting its Web site, www.tarta.com.

Crew kicks off 6th Copa Victoria Tournament COLUMBUS: The Columbus Crew kicked off its sixth annual Copa Victoria adult Latino-league soccer tournament last weekend. The 24-team, single-elimination tournament began Saturday (May 31) at the Crew Training Center at Obetz and will eventually conclude with the championship game, to be played at Crew Stadium prior to the Crew’s game vs. FC Dallas on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. On May 24, the Crew and representatives from participating leagues held the official tournament draw in the Stadium Club at Crew Stadium. Team managers and all 480 players from the 24 participating teams were

invited to attend the unveiling of the tournament bracket and were later treated to the Crew’s game against New England along with $10 in food vouchers. Tournament match days are scheduled for June 7, June 28, July 12, July 26 and August 2 at the Crew Training Center at Obetz ( 4153 Alum Creek Drive ). All matches are free and open to the public. “We are proud to host again this year the sixth annual Copa Victoria tournament for the growing and passionate Hispanic community of Columbus ,” said Eduardo “Eddie” Carvacho, the Crew’s Director of Hispanic Business

Development. “Copa Victoria has become a signature event for the five Hispanic adult soccer leagues in Columbus, offering a unique opportunity for the Crew to connect with the Hispanic community through its passion for the game of soccer.” The 24 teams participating in the 2008 Copa Victoria Tournament include: Atletico Santa Rita, Real Sociedad, Congoles, Quetzal, CD Aguila, San Ber, CD Chaletenango, Tapatio, Nayarit, Jalapa, CD La Maquina, Tigres, Ajax, Argentina, Valedores, Valladolid, Panteras, Juventud Alegre, CD Real San Antonio, Honduras FC,

This year’s teams were selected from five leagues around Columbus , including: Columbus Soccer League, International Soccer League Ohio, Ohio Hispanic Adult Soccer Association, Latinos Unidos, and Interlatinos. Tournament standings, pairings, rules and additional information can be found in the Community section of the Crew’s official Web site, www.

Movie Review: ‘Kung Fu Panda’ a bright surprise

Horóscopo ★ AAl★dedicar tanto tiempoAries: ★ a estabilizar tus emociones y alcanzar sensibilidad, quizás vas quedando demasiado atrapada por tus sentimientos, Aries.

A

Leo:

Acuario:

Five resent his undeserved opportunity, but when they crush him in training, Po, ever the fan, collects the rubble as a souvenir. Though most around him have no sense of humor, Po disarms them with his lack of intensity. His name, after all, means the soul, materialized. The fool in over his head is far from a new story, but “Kung Fu Panda” finds life in the old gag. The elaborate fight sequences (a memorable one is with chop sticks) are as inventive as anything in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” But the comedy of “Kung Fu Panda” lies in the deadpan looks and perfect pauses. Co-directors Josh Stevenson and Mark Osborne, both animation vets helming a major film for the first time, ensure that the comic timing is exact and that their cartoon creations have well-animated eyes. The right eye-roll (and there are many) always trumps a punchline.

The voice work is good all around, particularly from Black, McShane and Hoffman, whose part as tiny guru—a red panda—takes on a shade of Obi-Wan Kenobi with an attitude. Jolie is entirely forgettable, but it’s surely a sign of success that the A-listers recede as the movie rolls. The most enjoyable character, though, is a small supporting role voiced by Dan Fogler (“Balls of Fury”). As the palace envoy Zeng, he’s a Muppet-like bird so jittery that no flap of his wings is without hazard. As summer movies get bigger and bigger, they often make us, the audience, feel smaller and smaller. The bright “Kung Fu Panda” is a simple and lighthearted exception. “Kung Fu Panda,” a DreamWorks Animation SKG and Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG for sequences of martial arts action. Running time: 91 minutes. Three stars out of four.

owner, a goose voiced by James Hong. How a bird fathered a panda is a genealogy jokingly alluded to in “Kung Fu Panda,” but never resolved. “I don’t dream about noodles, Dad,” Po says. “I love kung fu.” The Furious Five are led by the Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) whose own guru, the turtle Oogway (Randall Duk Kim), fears their nemesis Tai Lung (Ian McShane) will return and destroy their Chinese valley. All Oogway wants, like Loretta Lynn, is peace in the valley. Their Chinese town is populated by pigs and geese and no humans, which might sound like an updated “Animal Farm.” But the closest thing here to Big Brother is an old turtle. To defend them, Oogway must find the “Dragon Warrior” to fulfill an ancient prophecy. As you might guess, Po is unexpectedly thrust into this role despite any evidence of talent, and the movie is essentially about whether he can live up to this destiny. The plot is standard martial arts stuff, but at every turn, the serious gravity of the kung fu archetype is contrasted by the extreme oafishness of Po. Take, for example, this lesson bestowed on Po by Shifu: “Panda, we do not wash our pits in the Sea of Forgotten Tears.” He’s plucky, but it’s not Po’s grit that’s endearing; it’s his casual goodnaturedness. The Furious

By JAKE COYLE AP Entertainment Writer Ah, the panda. There’s no cuter member of the animal kingdom, so why has he taken so long to land a starring role in Hollywood? The truth is, we like our cartoons to be the less attractive eccentrics: mice, rats, whatever Gonzo is. But in “Kung Fu Panda,” Jack Black’s panda isn’t cuddly; he’s an overweight dreamer who has more in common with Nacho Libre than Hsing-Hsing. He puts the giant in giant panda. The adaptation of such a delicate creature to the summer blockbuster habitat—a zoo if ever there was one— could have resulted in a bloated bore of a film. But “Kung Fu Panda” is surprisingly fun and light. It’s also easily the best DreamWorks computer animation yet, far surpassing the look of “Madagascar” or even “Shrek”—not quite on Pixar’s level, but close. “Kung Fu Panda” begins with a stylish, brilliantly colored dream in which Po (Black) imagines he’s part of the Furious Five, a group of elite kung fu fighters. They are like a Noah’s Ark of warriors: Angelina Jolie is Tigress (who looks a bit like Tony the Tiger’s sister); Seth Rogen is Mantis, an insect whose skills exceed his size; David Cross is the bird Crane; Lucy Liu is the snake Viper; and Jackie Chan is Monkey, whose species you can guess. When Po wakes up, though, he’s far from their ranks and can’t even conquer a flight of stairs. He’s the son of a noodle shop

He taught me how to read. How to tie my shoe. How to ride on two wheels. To act like a lady. And not throw like a girl. And most of all, how to not settle for anyone who was less a man than him. So when he needed it most, I just wanted someone to take care of him, the way he took care of me. When a loved one has a life-limiting illness, ProMedica Hospice provides comfort and compassion for the patient, and the rest of the family as well. The unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient are given the utmost attention and respect – whether care is needed in the family’s home or in the comforting and welcoming environment of our Ebeid Hospice Residence on the Flower Hospital campus. Medication consults, plan-of-care discussions, long-term family support ... it’s all part of what ProMedica Hospice does to help. And it does help. We want you to know, ProMedica will be there for you and your family at every phase of life.

RACHEL MARIE JIMÉNEZ Rachel Marie Jiménez, age 78, of Toledo, OH, began her journey into God’s kingdom on June 6, 2008, in her home surrounded by her loving family and with the care and help of Hospice. Born on April 18, 1930, to Louisa and Walter Romero, Rachel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved sewing, cooking and gardening. One day in the month of May in 1985 “the boys” at Mom and Dad’s Nite Club asked the owner, Hoggie, if Mom could come in on a Saturday to cook her special tacos. With Hammer’s help, one day’s cooking turned into 15 years of serving Mom and Dad’s customers with the best Mexican food in town. Everyone affectionately called her “Mom,” and “the boys” in return decided to build her and dad a new addition to their home with the help of Rachel’s brothers, John and Kelly. You guys all know who you are, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!! Mom took great love and pride in helping to raise and praise her granddaughter, Alejandra. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 47 years, Jesús “Chu-Chu” Jiménez; son, José Alfredo (Nicole); daughter, Carmen (Ron) Castillo; sisters, Isabelle Rodella, Ramona (Coco) Reyes; grandchildren, Alejandra “Mija,” Ron Jr., and Christina; as well as many nieces and nephews; and special family friend and godfather “Uncle Sam.” Special thanks to Hospice, especially Jean, Fran, Vickie, Tammy, and Dawn. Our readers are free to submit obituaries via email at: [email protected] at no cost to the reader, for publication in La Prensa and www.laprensa1.com. Gracias.

SPJ signs letter of support to protect whistleblowers INDIANAPOLIS: The Society of Professional Journalists, along with the Government Accountability Project, The Project on Government Oversight, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Public Citizen and 112 other organizations, have signed onto a letter addressed to Sen.’s Joseph Lieberman (DConn.); Susan Collins (RMaine) and Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii); and Rep.’s Henry Waxman (D-Calif.); Tom Davis (R-Va.) and Todd Platts (R-Pa.) in support of increased protections for whistleblowers. The letter calls upon Congress to complete a landmark, eight-year legislative effort to restore a credible Whistleblower Protection Act, also known as H.R. 985 and S. 274. In the letter, the groups offer personal assistance and ask that the final bills: • Grant employees the right to a jury trial in federal court; • Specifically protect federal scientists who report efforts to alter, misrepresent, or suppress federal research; • Extend meaningful protections to FBI and intelligence agency whistleblowers; • Strengthen protections for federal contrac-

tors, similar to those provided to Department of Defense contractors and grantees in last year’s defense authorization legislation; • Extend meaningful protections to TSA screeners; • Neutralize the government’s use of the “state secrets” privilege; • Bar the Merit Systems Protection Board from ruling for an agency before whistleblowers have the opportunity to present evidence of retaliation; • Allow a whistleblower the right to be made whole, including compensatory damages; • Grant comparable due process rights to employees who blow the whistle in the course of a government investigation or who refuse to violate the law; and • Remove the Federal Circuit’s monopoly on precedent-setting cases. “To keep a balanced check on government power and spending, we strongly urge members of Congress to extend protections to whistleblowers,” SPJ President Clint Brewer said. “Everyday, journalists rely upon these brave men and women to uncover stories of corruption and wrongdoing and that the public has a right to know about. Offering protections and a promise of less retaliation will further enable the free flow of information that our

country relies upon.” Under the Whistleblower Protection Act, whistleblowing is defined as disclosing information that an employee reasonably believe is evidence of illegality, gross waste, or fraud, gross mismanagement, abuse of power, or substantial and specific danger to public health and safety. To learn more about the Government Accountability Project, visit Whistleblower.org. To write a letter in support of H.R. 985 and S. 274, find your Congressman at House.gov or Senate.gov. A sample letter can be found on the Whistleblower Action Web site. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism advocacy organization. SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. LatinoFest is on June 14 at the Fairgrounds with La Fiebre, La Tropa F, y más The 8th Annual LatinoFest is scheduled this Saturday, June 14, 2008, from 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at the Lucas County Fairgrounds on Key Street in Maumee, Ohio— rain or shine. Headlining bands feature La Tropa F out of San Antonio, Texas and La Fiebre of Pasadena, Texas. Mariachi, Tejano and Banda bands also perform, starting at 1:00PM. La Tropa F is comprised of members of the musical Farias family. Already with several recordings under their collective belt, they signed to the Manny Music label in 1990, scoring their breakthrough hit with the chart-topping “Mil Noches.” In 1992, La Tropa F won the “Best Local Conjunto” award at the first annual “Pura Vida” Hispanic Music Awards; a year later, they also won the committee’s “Best Conjunto” award, that same year taking home “Conjunto of the Year” honors at the 13th Annual Tejano Music Awards. La Fiebre started out as a rock band. They had a couple of member changes in the early 1980s and decided to try Tejano. Their first album, Contagious, exploded and the rest is pretty much history. Noted for their powerful upbeat rancheras and energetic stage performances and awesome light shows, La Fiebre went on to become a top Tejano super group. The festival features over 20 Latino food and merchandise vendors. The “Family Time” activity area will feature pony rides, clowns, magicians, a children’s activity tent, an exhibit from the Toledo Zoo complete with live animals, dancers and more. Ohio tomatoes cleared by U.S. Food and Drug Administration REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (June 10, 2008): The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added Ohio to a list of states that are not associated with the latest food safety alert for certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes, due to an outbreak of salmonellosis. Ohio Agriculture Director Robert Boggs informs Ohio consumers that Ohio-grown tomatoes are safe for consumption. “The FDA has cleared Ohio tomatoes as part of their investigation, allowing consumers to buy with confidence,” Boggs said. “ Ohio is ranked fifth nationally in tomato production, and I’m glad that our producers won’t feel the economic affects of this nationwide food safety alert.” According to the FDA, 145 cases of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella Saintpaul have been reported since midApril. The FDA recommends that consumers not eat raw red Roma, raw red Plum , raw Round red tomatoes, or products that contain these types of raw red tomatoes unless the tomatoes are from sources not associated with this outbreak. A complete list of states, territories, or countries not associated with this outbreak is available at www.fda.gov/ oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html#retailers

Miles acuden a desfile puertorriqueño en NY

In Father’s Day cards, Dad is a lout

By HILLARY RHODES Associated Press Writer Fathers sleep a lot, and they snore loudly. When they’re awake, they like to fish or golf, but they’re comically bad at both. They drink so much beer they’re practically alcoholics, and they’re complete couch potatoes, always watching television and hogging the remote. At least, that’s the lessthan-favorable image of Dad on Father’s Day greeting cards. It’s a striking contrast to the poetic praise often expressed at Mother’s Day. Many men say they are tired of the “put-down” cards and would like some affirmation for a change—and at least one greeting-card company is listening. One father in Washington, D.C., who used to stay home with his kids and blog about his life as an at-home father, says the golf and fishing cards don’t bother him, but he doesn’t like the ones that make dads look incompetent. “This idea that men are somehow biologically incapable of caring for their children is the sort of thing that I don’t find particularly funny,” said Brian Reid, father of two. Not only greeting cards, but television and movies often convey the idea that Dad is unreliable with every parental duty from changing a diaper to picking the kids up at school, he says. Greeting cards can be a good litmus test for the way society perceives various relationships and people. Companies want to sell cards, so they aim to hit a spark of truth. But generalizing in order to reach people can lead to stereotypes that then get perpetuated and take on a life of their own. In an age where about 159,000 dads stay home with their children, accord-

ing to 2006 U.S. Census numbers, it’s hardly accurate to say that dads don’t know what they’re doing. One Hallmark card at a Stop & Shop this season showed a cartoon depiction of “When dads pack lunches.” In the picture, some kids are eating lunch together, and one says, “Looks like I got a peanut butter and salami sandwich and a can of WD-40.” There you go: the stereotypical incompetent (and tool-obsessed) father. But our culture might be headed away from that and offering credit to both units in the parental pack. Hallmark says it is offering more positive cards this year. “Men have told us they would like to feel a little more appreciated,” said spokeswoman Deidre Parkes. “That doesn’t mean you can’t give your dad a funny Father’s Day card, but it can be maybe complimentary humor rather than a negative card.” Reid calls making fun of incompetent fathers “this comic idea that’s run its course.” He mentioned a 2005 NBC show that bombed called “Meet Mr. Mom.” The reality series depicted how a family dealt with the mother going away when the father is left alone with the children. Reid said it didn’t work because it wasn’t particularly funny, extraordinary or otherwise television-worthy to see dads spend time with and take care of their kids. It’s nothing new, these days. Men who have children are getting tired of the often negative media portrayal of fathers, some say. “They’re either dumb, dangerous or disaffected,” said Roland Warren, president of the National Father-

hood Initiative, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit group based in Gaithersburg, Md. While absentee fatherhood is still a very large issue, the dads who are involved tend to be more committed and taking a more hands-on approach than they might have experienced with their own fathers growing up, Warren said. Fathers increasingly want to see the value of their role reflected in the media, he said. They have taken on more of the homecare and childcare as more women have joined the work force, so their contribution at home takes on greater weight in their minds. Is it so much to ask for a flattering card? Indeed, the greeting card industry might be getting the hint. A recent trip down a greeting card aisle found one reporter hard-pressed to find many insulting Father’s Day cards. Sure, there was the one that said, “Celebrate Father’s Day with a beer in one hand ... and a beer in the other hand.” And there were at least two that implied Dad is married to the remote control. But other than the small handful of “put-down” cards, most Father’s Day greetings were thoughtful, appreciative and often quite mushy. “I love you just like I did when I was little ... only now I appreciate you even more,” reads one. Another new Hallmark card with comedian Chris Rock carries the greeting, “Nobody ever says, ‘Hey, Daddy, thanks for knocking out the rent. I sure love this hot water. It’s easy to read with all this light.”’ This Father’s Day—June 15, 2008—remember: Dads are people, too. Choose your card wisely.
