Welcome to the scenically diverse region encompassing Wayne County Utah’s Capitol Reef Country. This vacation destination includes mountains, forests, pinnacles, arches, plateaus, and astounding desert landscapes. The contrast in elevation and terrain makes this area a haven for those seeking solitude or outdoor adventure.

YOUR NEXT GREAT DESTINATION

This region is an excellent multi-day vacation destination, central to Utah’s scenic attractions, and easily accessible from major cities such as Salt Lake City, Denver, and Las Vegas. Unpack once and discover a realm that is conveniently situated between Bryce Canyon, the Grand Staircase, Goblin Valley State Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Lake Powell. You’ll want to reserve several days to begin to immerse yourself in Capitol Reef Country, where you’ll have the option to explore three different adventure zones.

The Highlands

Capitol Reef

The Highlands zone The western section of Capitol Reef Country ranges in elevation from 7,000 to over 11,000 feet. Forest, lakes, streams, and open plains are key characteristics of this mountainous zone that is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing and many other outdoor activities. This is a grand place for exciting summer-time exploration or serene winter adventures.

4

Within the Capitol Reef zone is this 70 mile long national park that is part of the famous waterpocket fold. You’ll want to set aside several days to hike trails that lead through dramatic rock formations, view Native American writings, hand-pick your own fruit from historic pioneer orchards, or traverse the seldomseen recesses of this national park. Be sure to bring your camera or easel to capture your memories of this diverse terrain.

www.CapitolReef.travel

East Desert The Eastern High Desert zone includes unique desert landscapes. It’s a place where dinosaurs once roamed, a place with terrain that is similar to the planet Mars or our very own moon. This region was once the hide-out for famous outlaws, and offers access to the western edge of Canyonlands National Park. From here you’ll also have access to the Henry Mountains with its’ large herd of free roaming buffalo, and Lake Powell with over 2,000 miles of shoreline.

CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK

ATTRACTIONS Capitol Reef Country is filled with outstanding scenic attractions and land formations, from forested mountains in the west and south, to white and red sandstone formations in central region, to stark desertscapes and slot canyons on the east.

MOUNTAINS & FORESTS

Capitol Reef National Park is an oasis of colorful sandstone cliffs, impressive domes, and soaring monoliths. Roads and trails extend in all directions for the intrepid hiker, mountain biker or jeep explorer.

The Dixie National Forest and Fishlake National Forest encompass these two large mountain areas. Both areas offer excellent opportunities for fishing, hiking, ATV riding, hunting, sight seeing, camping, or enjoying a nice picnic. The nearby Henry Mountains offer additional outdoor adventure opportunities, including the opportunity to view a free roaming herd of buffalo (bison).

GOBLIN VALLEY STATE PARK Goblin Valley has been the back-drop to movies and is one of the many locations in this region that is simply out of this world. Thousands of nobs, pillars and goblin shaped rock formations combine to create a unique natural playground. Once referred to as mushroom valley, this unique area was first discovered by cowboys searching for lost cattle.

HISTORY & GEOLOGY COME TOGETHER Once called “Wayne Wonderland,” the park acquired its name from the great white rock formations which resemble the U.S. Capitol building, and from the sheer cliffs that presented a barrier to early travelers. Early inhabitants referred to the area as the “land of the sleeping rainbow” because of its beautiful contrasts: multi-colored sandstone surrounded by verdant riverbanks and arid desert vegetation, all nestled beneath deep blue skies. Early pioneers established large orchards within what is now called Capitol Reef and today the fruit from these orchards is available for picking by park visitors. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 and reclassified as a national park in 1971. The park is open year-round.

6

www.CapitolReef.travel

HANKSVILLE DESERTS & CANYONS The desert landscape of this region, carved by wind and water, has created numerous plateaus, canyons and gorges. The most narrow of these formations are called slot canyons and here you’ll find many waiting for exploration.
