Preseli Hills Rolling hills and long distance views, woodland, slate quarry, exposed on high ground

Route: Eastern end of the Preseli Hills to Tafarn Sinc Inn at Rosebush Distance:

9.5 miles

Time:

6.5 hours

Terrain:

Compacted earth and grass

Environment: Rolling hills and long distance views, woodland, slate quarry, exposed on high ground

A walk over the mysterious Preseli Hills and through 6,000 years of history to their highest peak, before descending through the woodland into the hamlet of Rosebush for some well-earned refreshments. This meandering walk over the rolling Preseli Hills follows an ancient trackway used by traders from the Neolithic Ages 6,000 years ago and down through time: the Golden Route. Before we start the walk we will visit the early Bronze Age stone circle at Gors Fawr and enjoy its commanding views of the Preseli ridgeline. The walk itself will begin at the Eastern end of the Preseli Ridgeline. First we will walk to Foel Drygarn, an Iron Age hill fort which contains three large Bronze Age burial mounds from which the hill takes its name. Then we will move on to Carn Meini, the source of the Preseli Bluestone which was taken to Stonehenge and can still be seen there today. The walk then continues past Bedd Arthur, the grave of King Arthur, and on to the battleground where he lost many of his best knights in the famous battle of the Preseli’s. We will pass various prehistoric sites and volcanic rocky outcrops as we wend our way up to the highest peak, Cwmcerwyn - or Mountain of the Dead - which is a reference to the Bronze Age burial mounds on its skyline. From there we will descend through the woods and past the old slate mining quarry into the hamlet of Rosebush where we will sample some of the local real ale at Tafarn Sinc.

Coastal Walk Elevated coastal path, with commanding views over the sea and shore line

Route:

St Davids coastal path to Whitesands Bay

Distance:

9 miles

Time:

6.25 hours

Terrain:

Compacted earth and grass

Environment: Elevated coastal path, exposed in parts

A gentle walk along the undulating coastal path with commanding sea views over Ramsey Sound and Ramsey Island, ending in the bay from which St Patrick took Christianity to Ireland. This is some of the best coastline in Pembrokeshire. We will pause for a welldeserved ice cream or coffee at the end of the walk before taking a short bus journey back to the car park in St Davids. The walk will start in the Oriel Y Parc car park (£5 for the day) and will head south to join the coastal path at St Non’s Bay, so named after St David’s mother. The path meanders slowly West past St Non’s chapel and Porthclais - the original port of St Davids with its nine limekilns - and through numerous wonderful small bays before slowly turning North and then East into Ramsey Sound. Along the way we will see dramatic rock formations with obvious buckles, bends and twists and natural sea arches. We will also pass a coastal fort dating back to the Iron Age which is protected by an earthen bank and ditch fortification to one side, and sheer cliffs to the other. The coastal flora is beautiful from Spring through to Autumn and you will not tire of the different varieties and colours. The coastline is home to many seabirds and we should see cormorants, gannets, various gulls, kittiwakes, ravens and with a bit of luck we may glimpse the oystercatcher and the chough. Out to sea we may spot porpoises, dolphins and seals. In Ramsey Sound we will see the coastguard station and the buildings associated with the tidal stream energy generator experiment. We will take a lunch break in one of the many secluded coves and will end the walk with refreshments at the Whitesands Bay café, adjacent to the ruined chapel of St Patrick who took Christianity to Ireland. Early man has occupied this part of Wales since Mesolithic times (10,000BC) although the coastline that he knew was very different to today in both position and appearance. Coming forward in time, the peninsula was invaded by Vikings and later by the Normans and since then has had a rich and diverse history – there is much to talk about on the walk!
