May 2015 Senior Times

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” Today, services and programs are coordinated and older adults continue to be a vital part of our society well beyond

Page 3

age 65. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Get into the Act,” to focus on how older adults are taking charge of their health, engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. In 2015, nearly 50 million Americans are 65 and over. The theme reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law in July 1965. Since that

time, the Act has provided a nationwide aging services network and funding that helps older adults live with dignity in the communities of their choice for as long as possible. These services include home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver support, homeand community-based assistance, preventive health services, elder abuse prevention, and much more. By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.”

Sr Life

Showboat’s 28th year of production raised a generous total of $8,000, which was donated to Diversified Human Services, Inc., for its Home-Delivered Meals Program that provides a daily, well-balanced meal to nearly 450 older adults throughout the Mon Valley area. Showboat Steering Committee Members (l to r): Bill Evans; Harvey Dunmeyer; Nancy Dunmeyer; Alice Grimes, Monongahela Senior Center Specialist; John Cheroki; Deborah Ritts and John Baumgarten are pictured with the symbolic check. If you are interested in joining in this annual fundraising effort, as the Older Americans Month slogan suggests, “Get into the Act” by contacting Alice Grimes at 724-258-9511.

Funding from the O-R project, received through the Washington County Community Foundation, in the amount of $15,749, and the Community Foundation of Greene County, in the amount of $4,800, will be used to ease the burden of caregiving for families in Washington and Greene Counties, respectively. The Agency’s Family Caregiver Support Program has provided services to caregivers for more than 25 years. With these generous contributions, the Area Agency

on Aging will have additional resources to grant caregiver “wishes” for respite care or relief, reimbursement for caregivers supplies and specialized adaptive equipment. Project funds through the Washington County Community Foundation and Greene County Community Foundation were also donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter for educational programming. Thank you to the Observer-Reporter Publishing Company for providing this valuable public service to the community, and the Washington County Community Founda-

Roger Davis, AAA Family Caregiver Support Program care manager, displays a few of the items available in the medical loan closet that the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) maintains for individuals who might call with a need.

The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Family Caregiver Support Program medical loan closet inventory is low and the Support Program is seeking donations of new and/ or gently used durable medical equipment and consumable supplies to help stock the closet. The medical loan closet is an informal coordinated effort to have donated new and/or gently used medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, bedside commodes, and walking aids on hand to loan to consumers, regardless of their age. In addition to participants who take part in the AAA programs, the items stored in the medical loan

closet are loaned to the community. Not only do requests come from individuals, they come from nursing homes, personal care homes and hospitals whose residents and patients may lack adequate insurance or financial means to afford necessary devices or supplies. Roger Davis, AAA Family Caregiver Support Program care manager, said that the demand has been great lately, but the donations have been few. “We receive an average of 2 calls a day, but the caller might be requesting something that we do not have. Then we have to put them on a waiting list,” said Roger. “Some people, for instance, call for nutritional drinks, which we

have, but the caller could be lactose or glucose intolerant, and we might not have the particular drink that they can use. “We usually have a few walkers and bedside commodes, but we receive a lot of calls for shower chairs, shower benches, bathtub chairs, lift chairs and transfer chairs, of which we do not have a supply,” Roger said. The majority of the equipment is used. There is no charge to those who borrow the equipment; however, borrowers are asked to return the items when they are no longer being used so that the they will be available for others in need. It is a worthy and beneficial cause. If you are spring cleaning and you have new or gently used medical equipment that you no longer need, please call Roger Davis at 1-888300-2704 ext. 4279, to make arrangements for a donation.

Greene and Fayette County Commissioners proclaimed May 2015 Older Americans Month. Greene County’s proclamation was given during the Commissioners’ agenda meeting on April 15, and Fayette County’s proclamation was given on April 21. The proclamations of Older Americans Month acknowledged the area’s thriving community of older adults and recognized the contributions and sacrifices seniors have endured to ensure a better life for future generations. Committed to helping all individuals live longer, healthier, independent lives, the counties partner with a network of aging services providers to positively impact the lives of seniors. The proclamations also emphasized the importance of communities that provide opportunities for home- and communitybased services that support independent living; that ensure that all ages benefit from the contributions and experience of older adults; and that promote physical and social activities, such as the Senior Games on Wednesday, June 17, at Waynesburg Central High School, Waynesburg, and all of the Senior Games season related events. 

Try eating flowers? The culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years to the Chinese, Greek and Romans. Many cultures use flowers in their traditional cooking, such as squash blossoms in Italian food and rose petals in Indian food. Adding flowers to your dishes is a nice way to add color and flavor, as well as a little whimsy. Find the following edible flowers. (Two word flowers are listed separately.) Experience farm fresh with PA Farmers Market Nutrition vouchers

The purpose of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is to provide seniors, who might be nutritionally at risk, to experience farm-fresh, nutritious, unprepared fruits and vegetables from local farmers’ markets. A second purpose is to expand the awareness and use of farmers’ markets and to increase sales at such mar-

kets, which are the final destinations for the fruits of the labor of thousands of Pennsylvania farmers whose produce is at the heart of our quality of life. By taking part in the Farmers Market Nutrition Program, you help a farmer and you help yourself. The local produce that you buy is fresh and tasty and your purchases, in turn, support

the economic needs of Pennsylvania farmers who grow the food and make it available at the markets. There are many advantages to eating locally grown produce. It can lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. It also lowers the risk of eye and digestive problems; and has an effect on blood sugar that could help keep one’s appetite under control. The Pennsylvania Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is a cooperative effort including the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, US Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania WIC Program, the South-

AAA

western PA Area Agency on Aging and senior centers and distribution sites. The program provides four $5 vouchers totaling $20 to eligible persons one time during the program year. The vouchers may be redeemed at area farmers’ markets from June 1 through November 30. To be eligible for the FMNP vouchers, you must be 60 years of age or older by December 31 of the program year, and for this service area, you must be a resident of Fayette, Greene or Washington County. An eligible individual’s gross income, which includes interest, Social Security, wages, Black Lung, pensions, etc., must be at or below $21,775. For 2 persons in a household the income may be $29,471; a 3 person household income may be $37,167. An eligible senior may authorize a proxy to pick up and use the FMNP vouchers as long as the

benefits ultimately reach the eligible participant. However, proxy statements must be completed prior to picking up the vouchers; they cannot be mailed; they must be hand-carried to the distribution site. (Proxy forms are available at local senior centers and Area Agency on Aging offices listed at the end of this article. Proxy forms may also be downloaded from the Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging website at www.swpaaaa.org) Seniors living in nursing or residential facilities, where meals are provided, are not eligible for the program. Lost vouchers cannot be replaced. Although stolen vouchers may receive consideration for replacement. Using the Farmers Market vouchers To redeem your vouchers, visit a local farmers’

market. When you arrive, look for the sign indicating which farmers will accept the Farmers Market checks or vouchers. Checks may only be used at farmers’ markets to purchase fruits and vegetables grown in Pennsylvania or produce that was purchased directly from a previously approved farmer from the neighboring states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. Wholesale produce is not eligible. Farmers may assist recipients in determining which produce is eligible for the program. A partial list of fruits and vegetables includes: apples, apricots, berries, cherries, grapes, melons, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, artichokes, asparagus, beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, greens, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, onion, parsnips, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins (for eating), radishes, rhubarb, rutabagas, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, yams, and zucchini. Fresh herbs (not growing in a pot) may also be purchased, if they are for cooking or flavoring. Farmers cannot accept vouchers for citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples and mangos or processed foods such as jams, honey, cider or baked goods.
