EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

THE OPPORTUNITY Lebanon Valley College (LVC) seeks a highly skilled, creative and experienced marketing and communications professional as Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. The executive director will report directly to the president of the College and be a member of the president’s senior staff. S/he will be responsible for providing leadership to the office of marketing and communications, while assisting the president and the senior leadership team with moving the strategic agenda of the college forward. S/he will be expected to enhance and promote LVC’s reputation, visibility, and brand.

THE COLLEGE Founded in 1866, Lebanon Valley College is a dynamic, private, coeducational, liberal arts institution of approximately 1650 undergraduates from throughout the United States. Located on 350 acres in the south central Pennsylvania community of Annville, this quaint village provides a safe environment for faculty, staff and students to live and learn. The campus is minutes away from entertainment and chocolate icon, Hershey; 30 minutes east of the state capital, Harrisburg; and 30 minutes north of Lancaster, the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Philadelphia and Baltimore may each be reached by car in less than two hours. Rankings in the U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges (Great Schools, Great Prices category - #3 North), Princeton Review Best Northeast Colleges and Forbes America’s Top Colleges illustrate proof of LVC’s strong reputation among peer institutions and with prospective students and donors.

THE COLLEGE (continued) Poised for growth, the College offers 36 undergraduate majors, supported by 102 vigorous and creative full time faculty. The curriculum, characterized as challenging, sophisticated, and flexible, also provides opportunities for faculty and students to create personalized majors. Popular, high enrollment programs include Biology and Biomedical Sciences, Business, Education, Health Professions, Psychology, and the Visual and Performing Arts. The addition of emerging, high demand majors, such as Actuarial Science, Digital Communications, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Music Recording Technology, and Medical Technology have positioned the College well in a highly competitive market, and will aid in growing enrollments and improving quality metrics and diversity. The attractive, well maintained campus contains 48 buildings and includes the Blair Music Center with recital hall and music recording studios, the NeidigGarber Science Center houses Biology, Chemistry, and Physics departments, the Vernon and Doris Bishop Library and Miller Chapel serve as anchors for the college quad, and 27 residence halls provide a variety of campus living choices. The LVC Athletic Complex includes recently renovated Arnold Field (now boasting Field Turf Revolution game field, new 400-meter track, and game lighting), a sixlane, 25-meter swimming pool, four-lane 200-meter indoor track, fitness center, and premier Division III basketball facility. Nearly 15,800 living alumni are found in 35 foreign countries and in all 50 U.S. states, plus the District of Columbia. High-impact educational practices at Lebanon Valley College provide students with opportunities for success in and out of the classroom. Experiential learning includes internships across most disciplines, clinical placements for health profession majors, and classroom immersion opportunities for education majors. Undergraduate research is encouraged and well supported by sponsoring faculty.

THE COLLEGE (continued) Study abroad opportunities are found in 12 countries for either full semester or short-term duration. With a long history of service to the community, LVC students, staff, and faculty are familiar faces at Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, and the Lebanon Valley Education Partnership, among others. To that end, students serve on every major policy and search committee, playing an integral role in shaping college life and campus culture. LVC students contribute a strong and clear voice in all areas of the College. The College recently received the largest gift in its history from long-time benefactors and trustees Jeanne and Ed Arnold of $10 million as a challenge grant toward construction of a new $20 million Health Professions Building.

BACKGROUND The executive director position at Lebanon Valley College serves as chief marketing and communications officer and has direct managerial responsibility and oversight for the Office of Marketing and Communications. The executive director will provide inspiring leadership for the mission, strategic goals, priorities and creative direction of this division. There are four direct reports - director of communications, director of editorial standards and brand messaging, director of athletic communications, and senior assistant for marketing and communications. Four additional staff serve a variety of related roles. The executive director will plan, implement, oversee, assess, and evaluate all marketing and communications activities. S/he will have close internal working relationships with the vice presidents for enrollment, advancement, and academic affairs regarding activities related to enrollment, fundraising, and faculty respectively. S/he will lend counsel and advice to the president on marketing and communication strategies to ensure that Lebanon Valley College presents itself consistently, effectively, and accurately to external and internal constituencies in ways that convey and reinforce positive core messages about the College’s values, mission, and accomplishments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The responsibilities and opportunities for the Executive Director include the following: •

Serve as an enthusiastic advocate for the College and all of its programs;



Oversee the College’s interaction with the news media and serves as spokesperson for the College;



Coordinate communications outreach involving critical incidents and be adept at issues management;



Lead the College in sustaining an impactful brand identity that increases positive awareness of the College, particularly its academic programs;



Support a consistent, effective editorial “voice” for the College across all communications platforms;



Coordinate marketing and communications strategies with enrollment, advancement, and graduate programs to meet enrollment and fundraising targets;



Develop a divisional budget and ensure it meets designated targets;



Work with the Board of Trustees and appropriate board committees to support the division;



Develop meaningful goals in support of the LVC strategic plan and division priorities, and utilize appropriate measures to assess and document progress toward those goals;



Utilize assessment results in decision-making and resource allocation to strengthen divisional services and programs;



Write materials for public distribution for the president, College, and Board of Trustees;



Conduct all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner in compliance with LVC policies and procedures;



Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Experience, Skills: •

Prior experience in a college or university setting preferred, and the ability to work effectively and prosper in the culture of a small residential liberal arts college;



Proven track record in leading marketing, communications, and branding efforts for complex institutions with a diverse set of constituencies and audiences;



Experience in managing both people and programs effectively and to carry out the many responsibilities of an office leader including planning, resource allocation, budget allocation, supervision, and evaluation;

Demonstrated capacity to manage competing priorities and deliver products on time and on budget;



Proven experience in dealing with media, including exhibiting skill and good judgment while enhancing the image and influence of the College with friends of the College and the general public;



Experience in designing and conducting marketing research and in using the resultant data to inform strategy and planning. Attention to detail and the multi-variance of data points and feedback and an ability to interpret data’s meaning in branding messaging and marketing strategy;



Experience in defining information needs, drafting RFPs and choosing/directing 3rd party research efforts;



A demonstrable record of creativity and expertise in implementing and utilizing effective strategies in a variety of media, including social networking strategies and tactics, for the purpose of increasing engagement to support the College’s overall goals;



Excellent oral and written communication skills;



xcellent interpersonal skills; that includes an ability to present the mission of the College persuasively and the ability to E network with others collegially;



Exceptional organizational skills and proven successful management experience;



Ability to demonstrate open communication and committed to transparency;



Ability to lead with integrity and vision;



Capacity to work effectively in a team environment;



Comfortable making decisions – large and small;



Appreciation for the mission of a residential liberal arts college;



Capacity to deal effectively with a wide range of relationships (internal, external, confidential).

Education and Requirements: •

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.



Minimum of ten years proven track record in marketing, branding, and/or communications success;



Availability for significant travel and evening or weekend hours, as necessary;



Literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media.
