Initiative for Peace: Focus on Timor-Leste 2016 Information Form for Applicants The Initiative for Peace: Focus on Timor-Leste welcomes applications from youth interested in attending nd th the conference. This year the conference will be held from Wednesday 22 to Monday 27 June 2016. Applicants should preferably be between the ages of 16 and 20 at the time of the conference. The conference will be conducted in English therefore a basic command of English is required. This conference will look towards the future of Timor-Leste and provide a platform for the participants to address post conflict issues. The objective of the conference is to allow the participants to initiate active involvement in strengthening the future of Timor-Leste by:

Establishing trust amongst all the participants. Exchanging personal perspectives on the past and current situation and addressing prejudice. Developing skills for conflict management. Critically examining the events that led to the past conflict and any existing tension. Pursuing new, imaginative and feasible strategies strengthening the future of Timor-Leste for the common good of all citizens. Exploring ways by which young people are able to take leadership roles and address issues of political and social importance. The program includes seminars on leadership and effective advocacy, critical examinations of the portrayal of events in Timor-Leste by the media, comparison of the roles of government and nongovernmental institutions, trust building activities, discussions on social issues, and cultural activities. It will also include a study of conflict resolution models and a development of plans for initiatives/projects to be put into practice in Timor-Leste by the participants. Participants will be expected to: • • •

Attend and participate fully in all lectures, workshops and conference activities Work in a responsible, respectful and constructive manner throughout the conference Engage in concrete initiatives after the conference

Location The conference is organized by students and teachers at the United World College of South East Asia, Singapore, and will be held in Dili, East Timor, at Centro de Formação João Paolo II, Comoro (Near the Nicolau Lobato International airport).

Cost All costs for the conference will be covered by UWCSEA. This includes accommodation, meals, and conference activities.

To Apply Applicants should submit the following: • A completed Application Form • Answers to short questions • An essay no longer than 500 words • A Letter of Recommendation from a principal or supervisor, who is not a relative of the candidate. • The reference must be signed, sealed by the referee and returned to the applicant. The applications should be returned to UWCSEA by Monday, 7th March 2016, by mail or fax. Please note that extra application forms can be downloaded from the TLYFP Facebook group but that applications can only be submitted by mail. •

Information about the conference venue, time of arrival and what to bring is enclosed. This information ONLY applies to the students that have been selected. The results of the selection will be announced by the end of April 2016.

Part II: Personal Interest in Peace work (maximum 500 words) In your opinion, what is the major issue facing the youth in Timor-Leste and what can the youth do towards improving this situation? Describe a project that you would like to begin in your own community, which you believe will improve the lives of people within your community. In your essay, you must write down: What kind of support you would need and who are the people in your community that can help you with your project? What special area of knowledge or experience about a specific problem in Timor-Leste will help you to contribute to the conference?
