For the best start of the semester make sure you: • Join ESN Student Network for activities • Get a bike (if you want) • Get your university card and library card • Join Student Lund and choose a Nation • Get a Swedish phonenumber/simcard • Join as much activities in your first weeks as possible!
Public transport & Bikes • Download ‘Skåne trafiken’ app in the appstore • Buy a jojo card at the central station for discount and easy payment • Buying a ‘duo-ticket’ is cheaper and is valid for 2 adults (note: you should buy only ONE duo ticket, not two) • Traintickets to e.g. Stockholm or Göteborg www.sj.se (make sure you click on ‘student’ for discount) • Best way to get around in Lund: by BIKE! Buy your bike via the fb group called ‘sell/buy stuff in Lund’
Studying • Main university library: very pretty from the outside, very uncomfortable to study • Juridicum: very silent library, in the middle of the centre • You can search literature on www.lub.lu.se and request books or articles (you need your library card to request books online)
Books • Second hand in bookshops, there is one in the same street as LUaccomodation but there are more throughout the city. • www.bokus.com to order course material online without high delivery costs • Get books from the libraries, cheaper and pretty easy
Willy’s Supermarket • Very cheap and huge supermarket just outside the city centre • Next to Delphi student appartments or Kämnasvägen (Adress: Magistratsvägen 22) • Saves you up to 50%, especially for vegtables and meat • Cheaper than ICA or Coop. • 15 minutes bike ride from the city centre, but also easy to be reached by bus from the central staMon
Nations and Nightlife • Student Lund (you can also download the app for an up to date schedule of activities) • Join a Nation for parties, sittnings, lunches and dinner! • Hercules bar studentnight on wednesdays • ALWAYS take StudentLund card & ID-card with you when you go out!
Having ‘Fika’ Swedes love fika. This means drinking coffee/tea and eating a sweet pastry with it. You can do that any time during the day. Traditional swedish pastries are: ‘kanelbullar’ or ‘kardemombullar’ Personal tips for fika: • Incognito • St. Jakobs Stenugnsbageri • Graffiti café • Ebba’s • Mormors bageri
Travelling tips • Rent a car and do roadtrips! Its such a nice way to explore the country. • Accomodations for larger groups are always easy to find, since there are a lot of cottages and cabins for rent in sweden. (most of them have built in sauna’s!) (www.airbnb.com) • The car will bring you basically anywhere, also to places you wouldn’t expect to end up! • http://www.europcar.com/location/sweden/lund/lund • http://www.rentalcars.com/nl/city/se/lund/? affiliateCode=google&preflang=nl&label=lundQrugYj3gV2tJZeyf2__9sgS16772764601&ws=&gclid=CPH_jJnyjsMCFU vJtAodzn8AjQ
Some other things that are nice to know • In Sweden giving tip is more a form of politeness than a neccesity • Tapwater is free. EVERYWHERE. Restaurants, bars etc. • Everyone in Sweden orders their own drink. They don’t do rounds. This is because you are only allowed to buy a drink for yourself. If you are buying for a friend too, that friend must come with you when you buy the drinks. • Swedes have the habbit to close the toiletcovers when they are leaving the toilets. • Swedes keep to themselves and are shy. Break through that and you’ll find them be super fun and friendly!
