Course Description: This course is designed to help facilitate and enhance the development of leadership skills in students. Students will attend multiple workshops in which the theme of leadership will be presented and then discussed. Through experiential learning, Phase I participants will develop the foundation of leadership that will better prepare them to serve in leadership roles. Course Goal: The goal of this course is to explore the individual leader. Through experiential learning, students will gain personal insight into what it means to be a leader. This credit opportunity is only offered to Excellence in Leadership participants. Course Topics: This semester EDHI 102 will explore various leadership approaches, such as leadership versus management, leading without a title, followership, social activism, values to action, and more. Course Requirements: Participants are required to attend at least seven (7) workshops. There will be multiple workshops that take place during the semester; students can attend based on their own schedule, but should note that Mondays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. are typically set aside for Phase I EIL workshops. If this time does not work for your schedule, you will not be able to participate this semester. Students will be required to complete four assignments over the course of the semester. Finally, students will be required to attend the All Campus Leadership Conference. Withdrawal Students taking EDHI 102 for credit must go through the formal withdrawal process with the Registrar’s office. This must be done by the student and by the course withdrawal date (3/17/2014). Communication Excellence in Leadership heavily relies on email for communication purposes. You need to make sure you are checking your Ball State email daily. Evaluation Students will need to attend the minimum number of seven (7) workshops and complete the four (4) assignments. The assignments will be graded on quality of content and personal growth.  Seven Workshops/lectures (10 points each) 70 points  Spring Leadership Conference 50 points  Four Assignments* (10 points each) 40 points *2 points deducted per day late 160 points = Total Available Point Total

Participants are expected to successfully complete all Phase I requirements. If participants meet the minimum requirements, they will be recognized as having successfully completed the program at the end of the year during the recognition reception and will be eligible to apply for Phase II of the program. Completion of the Phase I requirements may also be indicated on your leadership transcript. Total Phase I requirements are as follows: -

“Take Back College” Ryan Penneau Monday, January 13, 6:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m., Pruis Hall  Take note of the time and location for this workshop Ryan has been leading award-winning trainings and workshops for college students across the nation for over 8 years. Prior to serving students, Ryan spent four years facilitating award-winning and nationally recognized leadership programs for corporate executive teams. His book, Degree in Ninja, is used as a textbook for many first-year experience courses. “Leading Without a Title” John Kaufeld, Author, Best-selling author and entrepreneur Monday, January 27, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, Cardinal Hall Leadership does not always emanate from title or position. Leaders who do not know how to lead quickly find themselves without followers, while "followers" who understand how to influence and connect with

others quickly find themselves leaders. This session will explore how to lead an organization without a formal position. “Social Justice: So What? Now What? Then What?” Barry Hawkins, Assistant Director of Student Life Monday, February 3, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, Cardinal Hall This workshop is designed to help students understand social justice and oppression by evaluating their role in a diverse society. Students will engage in activities that allow them to experience a new leadership perspective as it relates to identity, advocacy, and intergroup understanding. All-Campus Leadership Conference Saturday, February 8, 9:00am – 3:00pm, Cardinal Hall The All Campus Leadership Conference is a joint effort between Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), Mortar Board, Golden Key, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Excellence in Leadership. The mission of the All Campus Leadership Conference is to provide a one day leadership development opportunity for Ball State students. The conference is free for all Ball State University students. The dress code for the day is business attire. Lunch will be provided. “Leadership vs. Management” Lauren Berger, Assistant Director of Student Life Lucie Blauvelt, Student Assistant Phase 1 Monday, February 10, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, Cardinal Hall Leadership and management provide two different philosophies to meet goals. While the terms are often used interchangeably they actually imply competing methodologies. These sessions will explore the differences between leadership and management and explore why these differences matter. “Followership” Curt Grams, CEO, Camp Yale Monday, February 17, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, Cardinal Hall "A leader without followers is just a person taking a walk.” Good followers help create good leaders. This presentation will offer a model of followership and explain why leaders and followers are both important to any organization. Lauren Bush Lauren, Chief FEEDer and Co-Founder of FEED Projects Monday, March 3, 7:30pm – 9:00pm, Pruis Hall As a part of the Excellence in Leadership Speaker Series, Lauren Bush Lauren will speak about leadership, philanthropy, hunger, and global issues. FEED Project is a charitable company with the mission of creating good products that help feed the world. “Building the Worldwide Leader: Leadership Lessons from the Founder of ESPN” Bill Rasmussen, Founder of ESPN Monday, March 24, 7:30pm-9:00pm, Emens Auditorium As a lifelong entrepreneur and sports fan, Bill Rasmussen will present his discussion on leadership as a part of the Excellence in Leadership Speaker Series. His innovations in advertising, sports, and

broadcasting include not only the creation of ESPN but also the concept for Sports Center. Once unleashed upon sports fans, ESPN’s impact forever changed the way we watch television. “Values to Action” Harry Kraemer Wednesday, March 26, 3:00pm – 5:00pm, Location TBA Drawing from first-hand experiences as the former chairman and CEO of Baxter International and from the popular classes he teaches at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Kraemer offers current and aspiring leaders a framework to adopt the four principles of values-based leadership. Insightful and inspiring, From Values to Action comes at a critical time when true leadership in every facet of society is greatly needed. Phase I Wrap-Up Monday, March 31, 7:00pm-9:00pm, Cardinal Hall Join the EIL staff for this final workshop where we will review what we have learned for the year, discuss the End of the Year Banquet, and discuss what comes next in the EIL program! During this workshop you will complete the Leadership Practices Inventory assignment, so your attendance is required. Please email [email protected] if you have any issue with this. Recognition Reception Banquet *This does NOT count toward your workshop total.* Sunday, April 27, 5 p.m., Cardinal Hall This is a time for family, friends and staff to honor and celebrate EIL students for all of their hard work and dedication that they have put forth in the program. Name of workshop and presenter(s) Compose a summary of the workshop topic Describe a few key things you learned throughout the workshop Explain how you can take what you learned in this workshop and apply it to your experiences here at Ball State

Your assignment should be 1– 2 pages in length, in 12pt Times New Roman font. Two (2) points will be deducted per day that the assignment is late. Submit to Blackboard by 7pm. Leadership Practices Inventory Due: Monday, March 31 We will distribute hard copies of the Leadership Practices Inventory for you to complete. This is the same instrument you took when you started EIL in September. We are asking you to complete this again so we

can compare your scores. This is due at the start March 31 workshop. Estimated time of completion is 10 minutes. Leadership Transcript Due: Monday, March 31 We will send you a link to complete a Leadership Transcript. The Leadership Transcript will help you, and us, keep track of your involvement and awards. It is a great way to document your involvement on campus. If you want, we can even print in on special transcript paper so you can share you achievements with employers or other interested individuals. This is due at the start of the March 31 workshop. Leadership Outcome Survey Due: Friday, April 4 We will send you a link to complete this instrument. The Leadership Outcome Survey is your opportunity to evaluate the entire EIL program. It will provide us with valuable information so we can make the appropriate adjustments for next year! Estimated time of completion is 15 minutes.
