Letter from the Directors Dear Stakeholders, Students, Faculty, Alumni, and Community Friends: To achieve lasting success, a university must equip their students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. For students wishing to succeed in business, few skills are more important than innovative thinking, resourcefulness, and perseverance. The Alta Resources Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation offers students a hands-on way to develop these skills, and many more, in the most powerful way possible. This unique and emerging center supports students as they take their new ideas to market and attempt to build a sustainable business model that solves a real world problem. Armed with seed funding, mentor support, and a burning desire to turn their idea into something much more, these students plunge into the marketplace feet first in an attempt to survive and then thrive. Some of these students will have ideas that fail, others will find massive success with their ideas; all of them will learn more about themselves, and the business world, than they ever imagined possible. The learning outcomes students gain from such a raw exposure to the business world can be matched by very few programs. This is no simulation, hypothetical case study, or tightly controlled environment. This program nudges students into the “real world” and forces them to understand customer needs and marketplace conditions well enough to make strategic decisions with their business that will ultimately lead to its success or failure. These experiences will allow our students to enter the world with more skills and confidence than their peers at other institutions. By allowing all students access to the Alta Resources CEI, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh showcases that it is a university that fosters entrepreneurship, encourages innovation, and supports student businesses in ways that many other universities simply cannot match. On behalf of UW Oshkosh, the College of Business, and all of our entrepreneurially minded students, we would like to thank you for your interest in our center and what our brilliant students can achieve with the right resources behind them.

“The Alta Resources CEI gave me step-bystep guidance on how to build my company and validate assumptions within my business model. Health Connection wouldn’t be where it is today without the knowledge and expertise that the CEI shared with me."

“My biggest win from the Alta Resources CEI was with understanding how to start up a business and actually get out and make sales. I was forced to step out of my comfort zone, and I am forever grateful for the resources that were, and still are, available to me.”

“As my business continues to grow bigger and bigger, I really thank the Alta Resources CEI for their assistance. They were able to connect me with industry-specific mentors and advisors that share their thoughts to help better myself personally and professionally.”

MONTHLY SPEAKER SERIES A celebration of innovation, success, and our outstanding students at UW Oshkosh, the MONTHLY SPEAKER SERIES kicks off each month in an inspiring manner. ABOUT THE EVENTS: Educational events are held once per month and help students learn more about entrepreneurship. These events are on campus and typically draw in audiences of 50+ students. Events are usually held as “Speaker Events” that invite a successful entrepreneur in to speak about his/her experiences, or “Workshop Events” that give the students a hands-on activity to perform. Highlights: Averaging over 50 students per meeting and peaking at 250 attendees, these events have been a great first place for students interested in entrepreneurship to start. Speakers have covered topics ranging from starting a business, marketing, dealing with patents, building the right team, and much more.

7

This recurring event is an ideal networking opportunity with a substantial, sophisticated audience who appreciate your commitment to our community. The Monthly Speaker Series also provides the Main Sponsor the exclusive opportunity to be recognized on all marketing collateral throughout the timeline of the event, and receive time during the meeting to discuss their product or services.

SEMIANNUAL THINK TANK An out of the box workshop to get students thinking about potential opportunities, SEMI-ANNUAL THINK TANK sessions begin each semester in a creative way. ABOUT THE EVENTS: At the beginning of each academic semester, a “Think Tank” session is held that helps students come up with business ideas and solutions to problems. These can be general meetings where any opportunity is explored or they can be focused on specific industries, customer segments, or technologies. Highlights: In 2014/2015, we had an average of 35 to 50 students attend these workshops and inspire students to discover a business idea that they would like to dig into further. Sponsors are given the option to explore problems that their company may be facing and allow the attendees to find solutions, or a general think tank session can be conducted. Ideas have been pursued in the past and even received follow on funding.

9

ELEVATOR PITCH CONTEST An innovative evening of ideas, the annual ELEVATOR PITCH CONTEST gives students the opportunity to carefully craft a business pitch and present to a panel of entrepreneurs. ABOUT THE EVENT: An annual Elevator Pitch Contest gives ten or more students just 90 seconds to pitch their ideas to a panel of investors and successful entrepreneurs. At the end of the event, three lucky students are awarded up to $2,000 in seed funding to push their business idea even further. Highlights: This event has been running for the past four years and has distributed over $5,000 to student entrepreneurs. One of the first place winners even received equity funding from an investor panelist right after the contest concluded. First place winners are given an automatic spot in the Annual Business Model Contest for a chance to win additional funds. Each year, the Elevator Pitch Contest attracts more than 200 student and community attendees.

11

A sponsorship of the annual Elevator Pitch Contest provides many benefits! First and foremost, students are educated and motivated to push forward with business ideas. Also, the CEI is able to build relationships with students, opportunities are created for media exposure, social sharing and interaction between the students and center is encouraged, and finally, the prize money for students allows businesses to be further advanced. Help us create a win-win!

BUSINESS MODEL CONTEST For one night only, the annual BUSINESS MODEL CONTEST allows aspiring entrepreneurs to showcase their business model to a distinguished panel of judges. ABOUT THE EVENT: Our keynote event of the year, the annual Business Model Contest gives up to ten students the opportunity to clearly articulate their business model to a panel of judges in just 4 minutes. At the conclusion, three students walk away with $35,000 in seed funding and in-kind prizes. The top three also receive an automatic spot in the 12-Week Accelerator Cohort held during the spring. Highlights: The first contest was run successfully in February of 2014. On average, over 50 students/teams apply each year and then that playing field is slimmed down to 10 contestants. Each year, the media does in depth coverage on the event, and at the last event in November of 2015, over 250 people were in attendance (standing room only)!

13

The Business Model Contest is our BIGGEST event of the year and includes an abundance of benefits to you, the CEI, students, and our community. Up to $35,000 in seed funding is provided to viable student business ideas, and those contestants are also given the opportunity to validate their ideas to over 250 people in attendance. The event is well attended and includes key stakeholders throughout the region such as the Chancellor, COB Dean, Mayor, Craig Culver, Senators, and more!

12-WEEK ACCELERATOR COHORT A robust program designed to create results, the 12-WEEK ACCELERATOR COHORT allows participating teams to “accelerate” their ideas and turn them into businesses. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: A 12-week accelerator program helps students accelerate their business ideas. With the seven to ten teams selected, they receive a startup curriculum, industry specific mentors, access to educational resources, and up to $5,000 in seed funding. Also, attendance to weekly meetings is required of the students in the program to encourage collective brainstorming and accountability. The top teams in this program “graduate” to the summer incubator program for further business development. Highlights: The Accelerator Program has been running since 2014, and the first cohort consisted of ten student teams. In years two and three, eight teams participated. As we conduct the program year after year, the focus has iterated to become a more “quality” based cohort with more focus on fewer teams. As a result of the program, all participants went on to launch their companies and some are receiving sales.

15

Throughout the 12 weeks of the “boot camp” style curriculum for the student teams, many benefits are presented. Funding is provided to viable student business ideas (distributed based on milestones), students are educated on many skills such as the Lean Startup model, opportunities are available for media exposure (especially at the Demo Day held at the conclusion of the program), and even job creation is prevalent. You too can be a part of this impact!

SUMMER INCUBATOR PROGRAM Designed to further develop ideas after the accelerator program cohort graduates, the SUMMER INCUBATOR PROGRAM is an exclusive opportunity for students to focus 100% on their business and advance it. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: After a face-to-face interview process is conducted at the end of the accelerator program, three student teams will be selected to participate. This program offers additional seed funding, office space, and a stipend that empowers them to work on their business full time throughout the summer. In addition, students will be connected to extra mentors and provided extra one-on-one counseling with the center. Highlights: The Summer Incubator Program ran for the first time in the summer of 2015. The second program is currently taking place. Teams are given an abundance of resources! Weekly mentor lunches helped to advance knowledge within industry specific niches, and pilot programs were launched in order to gather essential data for continued iterations/pivots.

17

Because of the opportunity for students to work full-time on their business idea throughout the summer months, a clear focus can be attained and results can be achieved. Students and their teams are educated on a weekly basis from high-level mentors, additional funding based on milestones assists in vetting out ideas even further, and media exposure allows for the successes to be shared. A sponsor will be essential in helping businesses thrive and eventually become a job creator in the near future.

[EXTERNAL] CO-WORKING SPACE Where innovation and creativity meet, the CO-WORKING SPACE will be an area where students of every major can come together in an off-campus environment and develop their ideas. ABOUT THE SPACE: An opportunity proposed by the College of Business Dean and Chancellor of UW Oshkosh involved a dedicated space to be developed just for students to get together and problem solve. Most recently, an area on the second floor of Sage Hall overlooking the lobby was renovated to be solely used by students involved with the CEI’s programs. Resources will be provided for students to assist with idea generation, business development, and personal advancement. A BIG thank you goes out to the Seifert Foundation for allowing this space to be renovated for future business leaders. Other opportunities allow for the donation of a building off-campus to be primarily used for entrepreneurship and innovation, in turn allowing for external space to be available to students (a current need that isn’t fulfilled). We strive to bring the top students to UW Oshkosh and with an innovative building we can make that happen.

With the assistance of a donor, we can finance the space long term in exchange for exclusive naming rights.

19

With an exclusive area reserved for aspiring entrepreneurs to focus on their businesses or ideas, you can make entrepreneurship a cornerstone of this University. Not only will your name be associated with the Co-Working Space, but a long-term relationship will be established and success stories will be made. Have a say and be the face of our new area for entrepreneurs to build themselves personally, professionally, and into young leaders for our community!
