In Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, Merseyside Police host this innovative international conference on serious organised crime. The event aims to build links and capacity throughout Europe, disseminate and discuss the development of police forces and examine techniques on tackling drug crime, gun crime, human trafficking and counterfeiting. It will look at relevant policy, both from the UK, EU and acceding states. The conference will also examine the need for cross-border co-operation and information sharing, and showcase best practice case studies demonstrating the successes of partnership approaches. Aimed at Superintendent level and above, and relevant to all law enforcement agencies in Europe, this conference will bring together leading experts from the UK and from Europe. It will be a key opportunity to discuss differing approaches to tackling serious and organised crime. Delegates will learn how to apply and implement new procedures and how to achieve real change in attitudes and behaviour.

Cities on the Edge Working with Merseyside Police “Cities on the Edge”, a partnership of 6 European port cities – Liverpool, Bremen, Gdansk, Marseilles, Naples, Istanbul - will contribute it’s collective European experience of serious organised crime. Showcased experiences will focus on young people and prevention, with much of the work being presented via a fascinating fringe of events taking place around the main conference. A crime writers’ forum will involve high-profile writers, and workshops; the TV and film programme will include screenings of films produced in Liverpool, Marseilles, and Naples dealing with topics such as the mafia and gun and gang-crime. Subject to confirmation, the city will also host a powerful exhibition on human trafficking called “The Journey”, a widely acclaimed project driven by the entrepreneur Sam Roddick and the actress Emma Thompson.
