Research methodology • Stage one – Agree scope and definitions Based on client feedback, project managers and consultants agree companies to include and the operating and financial definitions to be used in the database. • Stage two – Collating the information Our analysts contact the relevant national oil associations and fuel distributors within each market. They obtain each data point by conducting executive interviews and using a group consensus approach to establishing the final figure. • Stage three – Forecasting Forecasts are derived from a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. All oil executives are asked a series of questions regarding each data point and the expected five-year annual growth rate. Responses from each interview are then tabulated. Where there is lack of consensus the respondents are revisited and asked to reconsider their answers in light of the group information until a relatively narrow spread of opinions exists. Two key factors contribute to our use of this qualitative approach: - Quantitative modelling and forecasting requires historical data. This is feasible for the markets we have researched for several years and not for the latest additions to the database. - Significant changes in environmental conditions and consolidation within many of the markets covered in the database makes the use of past data in predicting future values of a time series questionable. • Stage four – Data-inputting and checks Our analysts input all of the data, re-check their inputs and establish links to derived figures. Consultants are presented with relevant forecasts (e.g. volume, site and throughput) for each market in the database. These are presented in a format that reflects the nature of the forecast data and includes both the primary research results and relevant secondary market data. Consultants run a checking program to draw out any possible discrepancies. • Stage five – Full data finalisation check The project manager conducts a full data finalisation check of all data cells against original information sources. A final series of checks are undertaken testing all the features of the database.
