I. Presentation of the event The European Day of Early Music (EDEM) took place for the first time in 2013, under the patronage of Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissionner for Culture. On 21 March 2014, the second edition of the event was organised, coordinated by REMA, under the patronage of UNESCO. Early music is a central part of the cultural heritage shared by Europeans, closely connected with other artistic expressions such as dance or theatre. It spans more than 1000 years of music, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. While some composers of these eras are widely known, there is a large repertoire still to be discovered by today’s audiences. The European Day of Early Music aims to increase awareness of early music and its diversity, and to bring it to the attention of wider audiences. In having many diverse concerts and conferences all over Europe at the same time and as part of a common event, a sense of diversity as well as unity is created. Events were organised by members of the REMA network but also by other organisations, since anyone was invited to participate in the celebration by organising a concert, open rehearsal, conference, etc. In addition to the physical events, REMA coordinated an online event, as part of the concerts were live streamed online, giving a wider audience the possibility to participate. II. Patronage by UNESCO The patronage of UNESCO was secured for the event. An application was made through the French national commission of UNESCO. On 13 October 2013, a letter signed by UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova was sent. She wrote, among others: "Without any doubt, this day will contribute to promote the musical heritage and artistic creation. Therefore, I can only congratulate the organizers for this initiative, which is fully in line with UNESCO objectives to promote the intercultural dialogue." The UNESCO patronage helped bring a wider attention to the event, and is a step toward its internationalisation (outside Europe). The UNESCO logo was used on every publication or print related to EDEM.

III. Promotion of the event

Pos ter Slovenia, Seviqc Br ezice

The promotion for the event was done on numerous levels: REMA members were informed of the event and started promoting it in the summer 2013. A list of contacts of European organisations such as conservatoires, festivals (not members of REMA), cultural networks and ensembles had been made. These organisations had been informed about the previous edition of EDEM, and again about the current edition in the autumn 2013. The event was presented at various conferences and meetings: - by REMA president Peter Pontvik and Executive Secretary Helena De Winter at a meeting of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) in Barcelona in October 2013. Since concert halls usually plan their seasons two years in advance, this was not intended for the 2014 edition of EDEM, but for upcoming ones. ECHO has 21 members, which are all concert halls. - by REMA Secretary Björn Ross at the European Music Forum organised by European Music Council (EMC) in Glasgow in April 2013. The presentation was attended by over 70 persons, representing various music related organisations in Europe.

- by President Peter Pontvik at the General Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union in Leipzig in May 2013. - by President Peter Pontvik at a conference organised in cooperation by REMA and the Association of European Conservatoires (AEC) in August 2013, for an attendance of over 100 people. - at meetings with representants of the French Culture Ministry (Eric Denut and Agnès Prétrel) in January and March 2014. - by Helena De Winter at a meeting with the coordinator of the European Union of National Institutes for Culture, Helena Kovarikova. Marketing package A logo had been designed by ADAKA in 2013 and was used again for the second edition. A new flyer and poster was designed in French and English, and sent to all REMA members as well as other organisations participating.

IV. Messages of support Two messages of support to the event were recorded on video and shared on the internet: Francesco Bandarin, Assistant Director General of Culture UNESCO

Peter Pontvik, President of REMA and artistic director of Stockholm Early Music Festival

“I would like to thank you and congratulate you for this important second edition of the European Day of Early Music. What you are doing, what the associations that are in the REMA network all over Europe, are doing, is an extremely important action. You don’t only celebrate an important cultural heritage of Europe, you bring it back to life, you bring it back to us for enjoyment, for education, for celebration and understanding of what the European cultural history has been, and also, most of all, to transmit it to future generations. What you are doing is an essential work. I would like to thank you on behalf of the world of culture for what you do, and to encourage you to continue in the future in this very important endeavour.”

“Dear friends, on 21st of March 2014, the second edition of the European Day of Early Music will be celebrated all over Europe. REMA, as the continent’s representative organisation for early music creates bridges between the network, organisers and listeners. On this first day of spring, and birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach, concerts, conferences, and other events in many countries will bring an awareness of the diversity of the European historical musical heritage. The celebration for early music lovers and for inquisitive listeners will also be available to a wide audience through online live streamings. After a successful first edition of this event last year, supported by Androulla Vassiliou, member of the European Commission, the 2014 edition is under the patronage of UNESCO. Irina Bokova, the General Director of UNESCO expressed her support in these words: “This day will contribute to promote the heritage and artistic creativity. Therefore, I can but congratulate the organisers for the initiative which is fully in line with UNESCO objectives to promote intercultural dialogue.” We are grateful for the continued collaboration of the European Broadcasting Union and as president of REMA, I am delighted with the increased interest in early music and UNESCO’s patronage which also connects the European Day of Early Music with the rest of the world.”

VI. An online event As for the first edition of the European Day of Early Music, many events that were organised on that day were streamed live online. The Finnish platform www.e-concerthouse.com that specialises in live concert streamings was chosen for that online event. The streamings were available on that platform, as well as on the REMA website. Organisers also had the possibility to show the streaming of their events on any other website. The fee for the platform was shared between REMA and the organisers. Each organiser paid a fee of 100 euros in order to participate in the streamings, whereas REMA paid the main part of the cost. In addition to that, organisers had to provide the equipment, and negotiate the rights with the artists. The following events were live streamed online (chronological order): 20 MARCH De Bijloke, Ghent, Belgium In Paradiso, Raquel Andueza & La Galania 8.00 pm (GMT + 1) 21 MARCH Stockholm Early Music Festival, Sweden European Day of Early Music at Stockholm Central Station 10.00 am - 5.45 pm (GMT+1) Conservatorio A. VII. Media coverage and social networks

Cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union Already for the first edition of the European Day of Early Music in 2013, the EBU decided to get involved in the event by offering some already recorded early music concerts to their members. In 2014, the EBU did more, and offered an programme of live recorded concerts during most of the day. A person was chosen to coordinate EDEM activities within the EBU, Alina Velea from Romanian radio. The following recordings were offered to EBU members on 21 March 2014: - 9.30: Spain, Barcelina: Europa Galante and Fabio Biondi (Vivaldi) - 11.05: Poland: Liliana Stawarz, harpsichord - 12.05: Germany: Bach Consort Leipzig (CPE Bach) - 13.30: Belgium, Brussels: Le Concert des Nations with Jordi Savall (Gretry and Rameau) - 15.05: Germany, Hamburg: Valer Sabadu, countertenor and Ensemble Lyriate (Handel) - 16.35: historical programme with Alfred Deller, Wolfgang Glüxam and Ensemble La Dolcezza - 18.05: Germany, Nürnberg: Ars Antiqua Austria (music Daniel Speer) - 20.05: Czech Republic, Prague: Capella Mariana with Vojtech Semerad (Tallis, Sheppard…) - 21/30: Denmark, Copenhagen: Musica Ficta with Bo Holten (Bach)

other media REMA sent two press releases about the European Day of Early Music, in November 2013 and February 2014 to about 1500 European press contacts. Members of the network were also asked to promote the event and share the information with their own press contacts. In addition to that, organisers of each event were in contact with the local press. A sample of press articles is available at the end of this document.

Social networks and website REMA has a facebook profile and an account on twitter. Both were used extensively on 21st March, especially to update regularly about the live streamings of converts. FACEBOOK page: Within two days, 44 additional likes were registered, so that the page had a total of 730 likes after the event. Usually, the page gains a between five and ten likes per week.

• ROMANIA http://en.romania-muzical.ro/articole/art.htm?g=2&c=18&a=1264811 An Interview with the REMA President, Peter Pontvik Friday, 21 March 2014 , ora 9.48 Today, the European Day of Early Music is celebrated for the second time in a row. The event, developed under the patronage of UNESCO, was organized through REMA – European Early Music Network. Peter Pontvik, the president of REMA, offered us details about this special day in the following interview. Mr. Pontvik, on 21st March, the musical world celebrates the European Day of Early Music for the second time. The significance behind choosing this day is clear: on 21st March one of the most important composers was born – Johann Sebastian Bach. Nonetheless, why did you want to relate this day to the name of the German composer? Johann Sebastian Bach is probably one of the most renowned music composers in the world. Even people who are generally no experts in early music or classical music have heard his name at least st once in their life time. This is the reason why the day of March 21 was chosen for our whole early music concept, as it also symbolically marks the beginning of spring. In my opinion, it is not about Johann Sebastian Bach, but the early music represented by this great name. The European Day of Early Music is a project of wide scope. Which are the participant countries this year? Belgium, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Great Britain, Sweden are on the list of countries partners with REMA, but certainly there will be events like this in other countries as well. Whom are the artists involved in the programme design for this year and how does the schedule look like? The artists will be elected by the local administrators; therefore we are not making a general selection for this European day. Each country is responsible for the preparation of its own programme presented on the European Day of Early Music. The events will be broadcast live on the internet as well, as there is such an extent of the new media. All of the countries involved are therefore equal? Yes! This is a very democratic process. Any European country is free to take part in this celebration to give the event even more richness. We have noticed an increased interest in the event this year, perhaps because of the UNESCO sponsorship. Last year, the European Commission sponsored the event. We are very pleased that due to UNESCO’s involvement, the European Day of Early Music will be connected to the rest of the world, as it is a grand organization. Music – be it early, romantic or modern – can almost always be related to arts such as dance, theatre, painting and even architecture. Is there such a connection between music and other arts in this year’s European Day of Early Music programme? Due to the diversity of the presented programmes I cannot answer with certainty, but generally speaking, there will be conferences and seminaries which will show the relation between early music and other means of artistic manifestation. From my point of view, music is closely related to theatre, dance and other arts; hence we are very interested in building bridges between different art forms at the conferences held by our REMA organization. What do you hope to achieve by orchestrating the European Day of Early Music? What is the purpose of this event? I think that the purpose would be to attract attention over the diversity of European musical inheritance. The event is dedicated to early music lovers, as well as curious music lovers. It is a celebration for the experts, as well as the public. This moment offers the opportunity to discover what early historical music can offer us, contemporary people.
