Joint Technology Initiative (JTI)

8 JTI: new instrument and new management structure 8 More efficient organisation of the R&DD resources across Europe 8 Aims to build sufficient critical mass; bulk of EU H2 and FC applied RTD&D in JTI; fundamental research in the “cooperation” part of FP7

8 Key features : 9 Concentrate efforts and funding from the industry and research communities with those from European, National, Regional and Local programmes in the form a Public Private Partnership

9 Goal-oriented approach, aimed at achieving specific targets and intermediary milestones (quality gates)

9 Optimal integration of research and demonstration actions, with continuous interaction to accelerate progress

9 Concerted effort over the whole supply chain 9 Driven by the industries that will have to take large-scale commercialisation decisions

Concluding Remarks 8 The new IPHE Projects are good basis for research and demonstration co-operation. 8 EC committed to support ILC process, welcomes the opportunity for deepening collaboration in key areas through linking and expanding IPHE recognised projects 8 Largely supports the concepts of ILC Group Guidance Paper, but seeks to avoid proliferation of groups which strains resources 8 Processes for facilitating new projects and activities must be facilitated and streamlined; e.g. website brokerage (compilation of projects/activities that seek co-operation), compendium of funding 8 Evaluation and monitoring process should be kept simple, straightforward and relatively informal at this stage 8 IPHE « events » are considered to be a success, but there is a lack of understanding of IPHE aims and operations amongst stakeholders IPHE ILC meeting, Shanghai, 19-20 January 2006

12% final total energy consumed in the EU from renewable origin in 2010 Outlines EU long-term energy strategy to rebalance its supply and demand policy. Priority to fight against global warming: new and renewable energies are the key to change. 21% total electricity in the EU from RES en 2010 No specific objectives for RES but big impulse to the integration of RES in buildings No specific objectives for RES but big impulse to the use of RES in cogeneration 6% of automotive fuels in the EU will be biofuels in 2010 Provide a framework to promote the market both for energy services and for energy efficiency measures in general in major energy end-use sectors Save 20% of energy consumption by 2020 (i.e. €60 billion of EU energy bill) in a cost effective way. This will help EU to achieve the goals of the Lisbon Strategy and to meet its Kyoto commitments.

cooperation dimension of running FP6 projects dealing with major technical and non technical barriers to hydrogen and fuel cells deployment

8 Preference will be given to proposals designed to stimulate co-operation and exchange through the established IPHE framework

8 Activities could include: workshops, studies, dissemination, cross

validation and calibration of theoretical and experimental results, benchmarking, round-roben testing, gap analysis and development of complementary research action plans and strategies

8 Third country partners can apply but consortia should include European partners(s) representing the running FP6 project (e.g. co-ordinator or work package leader).
