Most major train stations are located in the heart of the destination city and benefit from excellent connections with other public transportation such as the underground, taxis and buses. When travelling by train, you also avoid time-consuming and inconvenient transfers, endless lines at crowded airports or the stress of driving in a different country. Instead, you reach your destination refreshed and relaxed.
Whether your journey is long or short, comfort is always appreciated. On board, you’ll find spacious carriages with large seats and room for luggage. You can easily take a walk through the train or socialize at the bar-buffet carriage. And while second class offers good value for the money, first class can be surprisingly affordable, so don’t hesitate to upgrade!
From high-speed trains offering an efficient and rapid connection between two cities to luxurious trains, to panoramic trains offering spectacular scenery, a train ride can be a destination in itself. This popular way to travel also offers the opportunity to meet the locals and learn more about their country and culture while getting tips on the best secret destinations.
Whether you go for a pass or a point-to-point ticket, you can always benefit from great deals. Tickets can be very affordable when booked in advance, while passes not only offer discounts, but also provide local bonuses. Why not stretch your budget with a night train to save on hotel costs?
Be green
It’s not just the rolling hills outside your window that are green: it’s the train itself. High-speed rail systems are more environmentally friendly than any other means of transport.
All About Our Products What is a pass?
What is a point-to-point ticket?
> A rail pass allows you unlimited travel on the rail network(s) of the countries covered.
> Point-to-point tickets are valid on a specific route, between two stations.
> Passes are usually the best value if your itinerary includes three or more journeys.
> If you have only a few trips in mind, then point-topoint tickets are recommended over a pass.
> There is a wide range of passes: from the Eurail Global Pass (covering 28 countries) to passes covering only one country. A pass is also flexible, allowing you to choose when you travel within a set period of time.
> Depending on the routes and the trains, you will be offered “open tickets” or “global fare premier train tickets.”
> Discounts offered: Children, Youth, Senior and Saver (for two or more people travelling together; three travelers or more for BritRail Passes). > Children travel for free on most passes.
>P assholder fares provide travellers with a discount on trains requiring reservations.
What is a reservation? > A reservation guarantees an accommodation (seat/berth) on board the train. > Seat/berth reservations are mandatory on most high-speed, scenic and night trains. > Reservations are included in a global fare premier train ticket. A seat number is printed on the ticket. > Reservations must be booked separately when traveling with an “open ticket” or a pass. > On some trains, the reservation is called a Passholder fare if you hold a rail pass.
> Open tickets allow you to travel on a given route at a fixed price within a limited period of time. No specific travel date or time is mentioned on the ticket and no seat is guaranteed. > Global fares are tickets allowing you to travel on board most high-speed and night trains. Travel must take place on the specific train indicated on the ticket and includes a seat reservation. There is a wide range of fares and discounts of up to 60% when you book in advance.
What are Swiss Packages? > Our Swiss packages are tailor-made itineraries featuring famous mountain peaks and spectacular rail journeys. > Tours are unescorted and allow you to explore a particular area at your own pace. > Rail travel and hotel accommodations are included and are an excellent value. We also offer popular tours like Norway in a Nutshell and city passes for London, Paris and more.

Good to Know Which classes of service are offered? Rail travel offers several, most often classified as first or second class. In all classes, seats are large and comfortable, with ample legroom. Treat yourself to an upgrade to enjoy additional comforts, delicious meals and even more services. The affordability will surprise you, especially when compared to air travel. Consider the advantages of each class prior to booking.
Are there discounts for Children,Youth or Seniors? > Children, ages four to 11 years old, usually pay half the adult fare. Under four years of age, they travel for free unless a reservation for a separate seat/berth is required.
Paper tickets or e-tickets? Paper: Your pass or point-to-point ticket is handed to you by your travel agent or mailed to you before you leave your country of residence. Your paper ticket has a monetary value. E-ticket: Your tickets can either be collected at the station or received by email. > Print@Station: A reference code is sent to you for use at a ticket vending machine before boarding your train. There is no risk of losing your tickets before travelling. > Print@Home: Your ticket is sent to you by email and must simply be printed from any printer before going to the station. Once printed, your rail ticket is valid for travel.
What is the difference between Continuous and Flexi Passes? When you select your pass, you can usually choose between Continuous Passes, to travel consecutive days during the validity of your pass, or Flexi Passes, to travel on the (consecutive or non-consecutive) days of your choice within the validity of your pass.
4
> Children under 16 travel free with a parent with a Swiss Travel Pass and with a BritRail Pass a child under 16 can travel free with an adult or senior. Eurail, German Rail and France Rail Passes allow two children under 12 to travel free with a paying adult. Reservations for separate seat/berths are at an additional cost. > To qualify for a youth discount of up to 50%, travelers must be between 12 and 25 years of age. In most cases, Youth Passes are available in first and second class. > Travellers 60 years and older are considered seniors and can also benefit from special discounts on certain passes. Good deals on point-to-point tickets are available to most travellers. IMPORTANT: Age limits vary according to the product or the country travelled, so check before booking.
What are Saver & Twin Passes? When two or more people travel together with a pass, they may be entitled to a discount between 10% and 20% off the regular price. Depending on the pass, the rules and names vary: > Saver (two to five people, except BritRail: three to nine people) > Twin (two people)
Day and Night Trains All About Train Accommodations and Stations What types of compartments or sleeping accommodations are available on overnight trains?
Group Travel Services
They vary according to the train and route. The most common compartments are singles, doubles and couchettes. Some offer T3, T4 and deluxe sleepers. > A single is a first-class compartment that contains one bed, a private washbasin, linens and towels. > A double is the same as a single with two beds (usually bunked). > A couchette is a very affordable second-class option with six bunk beds and a public washroom within each carriage. > T3 compartments contain three beds, a private washbasin, fresh linens and towels.
Groups of ten or more travelling together receive discounted pricing and personalized service. Your dedicated Group Travel Consultant will work with you to secure space months in advance and provide helpful information to ensure that your rail journey is a success. Your consultant can also help organize: > Seat, sleeper and couchette reservations > Train charters or exclusive carriages > Meal service and luggage handling > City transportation cards & museum passes From student groups to corporate incentives, we’ve got you covered.
> T4 compartments contain four beds plus the amenities of a T3.
What do I do with my luggage?
> Deluxe sleepers include a private restroom in your compartment.
torage compartments are available on all trains and S are located at the end of each carriage and/or above the seats. Pack lightly for manageability and allow time if you have more than one suitcase and need to change trains. Please label your luggage to avoid mix-ups, and note that some major train stations do have luggage storage facilities. For groups of ten or more, luggage handling is available for advance purchase on selected trains.
Reservations are mandatory on all overnight trains.
How do I find my train?
Are additional services available at the stations?
It’s easy. At the train station, you’ll see large Departure and Arrival boards located in the center of most stations. Simply match the train number and departure time on your reservation or ticket to the train number on the departure board. The platform number where you should go will be listed right next to it. Once on the platform you’ll notice that each carriage (also known as a coach) has a clear identification number on its side. Your reservation/ticket will list your carriage/coach number and your class of service.
Most stations offer services such as currency exchange, shops, information desks, restrooms, restaurants and more. You can unwind at Europe’s longest champagne bar at London’s St Pancras station. Enjoy high-end fashionista shopping at Milan Centrale. And how about a little art infusion at Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha train station, home to a permanent sculpture display? You’ll also find that many of Europe’s train stations are hubs for other transportation like local buses and subways.
