Overview The Euroa Agricultural Society’s 123rd Annual Show held on the 26th October 2013. The Annual Show commences the celebrations for ‘Wool Week’, this spring community celebration brings the small community of Euroa together. The 2013 theme was yarn bombing, celebrating products made from wool. The Euroa Shearing Championships forms a major part of the annual show, the event draws large crowds from a wide variety of backgrounds. With show goes being drawn to the vibrant commentary and cool shade of the large Morton bay fig trees eventually most come to take in the atmosphere. The Euroa Shears draws together locals and supporters to pull off a well organised and respected event. Without the support, sponsorship, time and effort of these people the Euroa Shears would not be as successful as it is. The championships consist of five events, Learners, Intermediate, Senior, Open and Local. Four of these events are finewool championships whilst the local is a strongwool event. The day is a full day commencing with the first draw at 9am and the day is concluded by about 6pm with the presentations. 2013 saw an increase in competitors with 53 individual shearers. We also saw an increase in international competitors representing, Ireland, France, Germany and New Zealand. Due to the number of shearers the number of events needed to be limited to cater for the number of sheep supplied.

Conduct of Competition The 2013 Euroa Shears is conducted under the rules of the “Australian National Shearing Association” (ANSA). Euroa also has an Aggregate Competition between Euroa and Omeo shows for both the open and intermediate events. Euroa uses a rotational judging system involving nine judges, while running 6 stands. Scores are recorded on both a pen and board sheet, which are then added up to give an overall score. These score sheets are available to the competitor after the presentations and shearers are encouraged to ask questions of judges on how to improve for future events. Competitors are encouraged to ‘step up’ into the higher classes to gain further experience at show shearing, this year due to the number of individual shears organisers needed to restrict the number of events.
