ric Pierce, an entrepreneur who turned his love for the outdoors and hunting into a thriving business, was born in Burlington, Iowa on April 11, 1940. He grew up in rural Iowa and inherited his father’s love of guns and hunting and his mother’s love of fishing. When he was a senior in High School Eric’s family moved to Illinois, where he met his wife Nancy. For their first date, Eric took Nancy on a drive to Eric’s favorite duck hunting spot to watch the ducks come in. Eric and Nancy had three children: Marc, Kristan and Signe. They lived in Montgomery, Illinois, where Eric worked for 22 years as the Paint Lab Supervisor at Lyon Metal.

Eric Pierce

At the age of forty, Eric was ready for a change in career and location. “By the time I was in high school, Dad was becoming disenfranchised with his job at the factory—it just wasn’t what he saw himself doing the rest of his life,” said Marc Pierce, Eric’s son. “The area we lived in was being increasingly developed as part of suburban Chicago. We watched all these farms turning into housing developments and shopping malls and said ‘We need to get out of here!’” A friend who had recently moved to Montana described Bozeman as a “Mecca for those of us that love the outdoors.” After visiting Bozeman, the Pierce family decided to relocate. “In retrospect, it was an incredibly courageous thing to do,” Marc said. continued on page 4

tan Nicholson, a board member of both the Seeley Lake Community Foundation and the Montana Community Foundation, recently defined community leadership as “working toward a community priority, a highly visible project that affects a lot of members of a community.” He added that community leadership “gives the board the courage to go on. And that’s not a small matter, because being a volunteer board member in a small community, you need some emotional support.” In the pages of this newsletter you’ll read about the inspiring leadership projects our affiliates have conceived over the past year. It’s even more impressive when you consider that most of these foundations are run entirely by volunteers in small, rural communities, where there are fewer people to fill the roles required, not only by community foundations, but every other nonprofit with a worthy mission to fulfill. The volunteers who serve on the boards of our affiliate community foundations have been working overtime this year. On top of their leadership work, our affiliates have collectively raised more than $455,000 for their endowments in the last fiscal year, an increase of more than $100,000 over last year’s total. Our incentive program will award them over $85,000 in matching funds to be used for grantmaking and operational support.

Their leadership work is diverse and exciting, ranging from air quality improvement in Seeley Lake to a nonprofit resource center in Red Lodge. The Montana Community Foundation engages in leadership work and encourages our affiliates to do the same because of the unique position a community foundation holds in the framework of a city or town. Building a permanent financial resource to support future community needs and taking on important leadership projects tell us community members are beginning to understand their ability to create their future by design and not default. It seems clear that federal investment in rural America will decline. Most national and regional foundations are focusing on urban areas where higher populations appear to create opportunities for bigger impact. If we want our communities to remain places where people want to live and raise families, we have to take charge of building local leadership, financial assets, and infrastructure. We see several of our local community foundation affiliates taking bold steps to do just that. Linda E. Reed President/CEO

Eric had always been an entrepreneur, running a fishing club and trading “He was a natural antiques in his spare time. After the mentor to young family resettled in Bozeman, he, Marc and a friend decided to start a carving people…nothing business. “We knew people in Illinois delighted him who made reproductions of antique more than to see a duck decoys and we had always admired them,” Marc said. “So we bought the young hunter take necessary equipment with our savings his first shot.” and we set up shop in Bozeman as Big Sky Carvers.” The business grew steadily —Marc Pierce Son of Eric Pierce and President of Big Sky Carvers through the 1980s, selling decoys in gift shops, galleries and antique stores. The Pierces formed connections with artisans and craftsman across Montana and hired them to be part of the creative team. Their product line expanded beyond ducks to carvings featuring bears, trout and other wildlife. By 1990, Big Sky Carvers had become more than a woodcarving business—it employed hundreds of people and produced gifts, collectibles and home décor for everyone who valued the outdoors and wanted that style reflected in their homes. Today, “any retailer that sells wildlife or sporting type gifts for home décor will carry Big Sky Carvers,” Marc said. “We’re really fortunate.” Eric’s philanthropy was a natural extension of his love for the outdoors. “I remember when I was a kid, Dad loved to hunt pheasants,” Marc said. “But when pheasant season was over, if the winter was really harsh he’d be out there feeding the pheasants to make sure the hens got through the winter. He wasn’t just a hunter; he was connected to wildlife in all ways.” Eric contributed his time and talents to Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Pheasants Forever. “He really believed that a mature sportsman should give back to these resources we enjoy,” Marc said.

In 1997, Eric and Marc used some of the profits from their thriving business to create the Big Sky Carvers Endowment Fund at the Montana Community Foundation. The fund supports the vocational education program at Manhattan High School, providing funding to purchase new equipment and expand the program. “Dad thought, and I agree, that there’s an overemphasis on university level education these days. People go to high school and learn that you either go to college or university or else you get a job. There’s a space between there that Dad felt was underserved, and that’s the student that wants to learn about the trades,” Marc said.

Marc Pierce, President of Big Sky Carvers, presents Mike Houghton, Industrial Technology Teacher at Manhattan High School, with a $10,000 grant to expand the school’s vocational program

Eric’s support of Manhattan’s students came naturally; he was a natural mentor to young people, teaching them gun safety and the art of hunting. After retiring and selling his interest in Big Sky Carvers in 2000 he spent his time hunting with not only his grandsons but other young people as well. Nothing delighted him more than to see a young hunter take his first shot. Eric passed away in the fall of 2010, leaving his wife Nancy, three children, and eight grandchildren. He also leaves a legacy in the form of Big Sky Carvers and the endowment fund at the Foundation. “It’s a fitting tribute for Dad,” Marc said. “He always wanted to give back to the community and have a positive effect on young people. We’re excited that it can be a tribute to him and do some good.”

Local Community Foundation Leadership Grants

E

very year, the Foundation invites affiliate community foundations across the state to apply for our Leadership Grant Program, which provides up to $15,000 for projects that create a positive impact in a rural community. More than $180,000 has been awarded since the program began in 2006 for a wide variety of projects, from building a school playground to holding community conversations about important issues. Each participating community foundation must take the lead in organizing the project, finding community support for it, fundraising, and finding partners to make it a reality. In 2011, we awarded $45,000 in Leadership Grants to six community foundations. The projects the grants funded are as diverse as the communities themselves.

Roberts Community Foundation: A Community Plan

“Among community groups there’s been discussion of community planning needs for the past twenty years,” said Joel Bertolino, a Roberts Community Foundation board member. “We felt there was an opportunity to take a role in creating a future planning document for Roberts.” Among the most pressing is the need for better signs and crosswalks across Highway 212 to allow for foot and bike traffic. “There’s also a lack of storm drainage and sidewalks along that road and others,” Bertolino said. $7,500 was awarded to the Roberts Community Foundation to sponsor two community forums to discuss potential community needs and assess growth potentials in Roberts. The Roberts Community Foundation is collaborating with the Roberts Rural Fire District and Roberts United Methodist Church to host the forums at two events in June and October. “It’s a collaborative effort with the entire community,” Bertolino said. “The most important thing is that we take everyone’s input, so we can define the strengths of the community and build on them.”

Columbus Community Foundation: Nonprofit Education “We’re in our third year of grantmaking and we see the need for capacity building in our grant applications, and as a new organization it’s become a need for our board as well,” said Melissa Kramer, President of the Columbus Community Foundation Board of Directors. The Columbus Community Foundation received $2,500 to fund a series of workshops for local nonprofits on governance, fundraising, strategic planning and other topics of interest. The Columbus Community Foundation conducted a survey of nonprofits in the area to see if the idea was worthwhile and received an overwhelming response. “It would be helpful to have training and advice on management, effectiveness and motivation of our board members as each person contributes to the mission of their organization,” wrote Charles Egan, Chairman of the Stillwater Historical Society and Beartooth Area RC&D in a letter of support. “There’s a lot of information out there on building a better nonprofit organization, but we want to bring in local and regional experts and have a local resource that nonprofits could call tomorrow if they need to,” Kramer said. “And we want to learn along with them, because we’re growing too.”

F.A.I.R. Community Foundation: Community Careers for Local Students “We’re all pretty aware of the rural brain drain, where the youth are leaving and people are getting older,” said Marvin Quinlan, Jr, F.A.I.R. Community Foundation Board member. “We’ve been looking at different ideas on how to deal with that issue.” F.A.I.R. plans to modify a program piloted by the University of Nebraska, which assigns local business owners as mentors to young people who are interested in business ownership in their community. “What they did is go to existing businesses and have a discussion with the owner about their succession plan,” Quinlan said. “Then they went to the schools and developed a course on Rural Career Development, so that students can explore the business opportunities where they live. We want to talk to kids and say there is an opportunity to make a living if you really want to stay here. We also want to reach out to people who have left the community and want to come back.” $2,500 was awarded to F.A.I.R. Community Foundation to fund their project to increase career opportunities for youth in northern Rosebud County and sustain existing rural businesses. The project is still in the planning stages, but Quinlan hopes the initial conversations with business owners and the Rural Career Development course can be finalized before the end of the year. “If we’re going to sustain our communities, we have to do this,” he said.

Greater Polson Community Foundation: Envision Polson The Greater Polson Community Foundation received $6,000 to fund the Community Foundation’s community visioning project, Envision Polson. “This is a work in progress,” said Penny Jarecki, Greater Polson Community Foundation Board Chair. “We have a core group, which has written a vision statement that has some explicit statements about the key facets of our community. This very practical and down to earth statement is going to be published on the GPCF website and the Polson Chamber of Commerce website, inviting members of the community to read the statement, tell us what they think, add their suggestions, and join us as we work to make Polson all it can be.” “It’s a community-wide conversation based on what we envision Polson could be,” Jarecki said. “We want to improve the standard of living for all of our citizens, so that family members can stay here and make a living and not have to leave the area. Making Polson into a four-season town rather than a pretty place to enjoy summer will benefit residents and visitors alike.”

Seeley Lake Community Foundation: Better Air Quality for All Recently installed air quality monitors in Seeley Lake recorded substantial air pollution from wood stoves in the town. The worst readings came from an air monitor installed at the Seeley Lake Elementary School. To address wintertime air pollution, the Seeley Lake Community Foundation is partnering with the Seeley Lake Community Council, Missoula City-County Health Department and other community groups to replace up to 25 high-emission wood stoves in 2011. “It’s not healthy,” said Loren Rose, President of the Seeley Lake Community Foundation Board of Directors. “In the winter, we have skiers and other visitors and we can see it start to hurt our economic base. If we can’t fix it, it will stymie economic development.” $13,500 was awarded to the Seeley Lake Community Foundation to support their project to improve air quality in Seeley Lake. Along with matching funds from the Seeley Lake Community Foundation, the grant will help to purchase EPA certified wood and pellet stoves and stovepipe, which will replace the stoves in Seeley Lake that emit the most pollution. In addition, the Seeley Lake Community Council will hold public education events to show stove users how to burn wood more efficiently. “If the poor air quality in Seeley Lake continues, the EPA can come into the community and require that things be done,” said Loren Rose, Seeley Lake Community Foundation Board President. “We want to get those readings to the place where the federal government isn’t looking at us.”

Red Lodge Area Community Foundation: Education Now! The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation (RLACF) received $8,000 for Education Now!, a series of workshops for local nonprofits on governance, fundraising, volunteer management and other topics of interest. The Red Lodge Area Community Foundation has created a community-wide resource for nonprofits through the donation of a building by a generous donor. The community foundation has created a meeting and conference space, workstation and reference library for area nonprofits. RLACF will use the grant to host trainings for local nonprofits at the new Nonprofit Conference Center. “We had a donor who had a building available for donation,” said Tracy Timmons, RLACF Executive Director. “Our promise to the donor was that we would keep it open to the public, specifically nonprofits, to use to further their mission. So we’ve created the Nonprofit Conference Center. It’s open to nonprofits to have their meetings, and it has technology for presentations.”

Over the next twelve months, RLACF will host trainings on fundraising, volunteer management, financial stability and database management for nonprofits. “We tried some nonprofit trainings last year and found success with them. We receive positive comments and requests for more,” Timmons said. “So that was the most important reason that we decided to do more.”

Charitable Giving Guide: Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets

M

any people don’t know that they can use their retirement plans to make a gift to charity, and that using these funds can be an effective estate planning strategy. Retirement plans, including IRAs, Keoghs, 401(k)s and nonqualified deferred compensation may be subject to income, Federal and state estate taxes, and even excise taxes when plan holders die. These taxes can currently consume up to 75% of the assets in those plans. This tax makes retirement plans one of the worst assets to leave your heirs but one of the best vehicles for leaving a legacy to the charities you care about. For example, John was only taking the minimal annual distributions from his retirement plan. He know that not only would his estate pay taxes on any remaining funds, but also that his heirs would owe income tax on those assets—as high was 75%--as they received them. Since he had already provided for his children during his lifetime, John decided to use his retirement assets to establish a fund at the Montana Community Foundation. That way, not only would the assets escape estate tax, but no income tax would be due because the Foundation is a charitable organization. Through his fund at the Foundation, John would be able to leave a legacy and continue his tradition of giving back to Montana. Giving the remainder of a retirement plan is a way to make sure you have access to all your assets during your lifetime while protecting “left-over” funds from taxation.

12

It is a way to give that is: n

Flexible: You can change your mind at any time.

n

Economical: Your estate will be entitled to a tax deduction, and no income tax will be due on the assets that pass to the Foundation.

n

Personal: Your children may carry on your family’s tradition of giving. You may designate a particular area of charitable interest or name specific charitable recipients, wherever they are located.

n

Efficient: The only documentation required is a change of beneficiary form, which is available from your plan’s administrator.

A gift from a retirement plan is ideal for those who want: n Access

to all their assets during their lifetimes

n To

make a difference for Montana charities

n To

achieve the maximum impact with their charitable dollars

n To

redirect their dollars from taxes to the causes and organizations of their choice

By naming a fund at the Foundation as the beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, you can avoid taxes and create a lasting legacy for the causes and organizations you support. If you’d like to learn more about this type of gift, please give us a call. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your financial advisor.

The Montana Community Foundation has a dual mission: to cultivate endowed philanthropy and invest in community vitality. The best way we know how to stimulate community vitality is to support the development and growth of local community foundations. Our goal is to see at least one active local community foundation in every county of Montana because we think granting decisions are best made locally. If you feel indebted to your community for the education you received, the opportunities that have come your way, and the quality of life you have enjoyed, here is your chance to give back.
