Epilogue The days and weeks after the funeral were hard for the Prince family. Darce had to concentrate on making a living while trying to care for three small children. At first Darce’s brother, Reed, and his wife, Laura, took the children into their home and cared for them. After a while, Vernile stayed with another uncle, Vivian, and his wife, Marva. Here he was able to be with his cousin, Lowell, who was the same age. A few months later, Darce’s niece, Berdean, was hired to care for the kids during the day and they all moved back home. As school started in the fall of 1954, life was gaining a small semblance of normalcy. For Darce, missing his loving companion was intensified by the responsibility of caring for the children. Sometime in the fall of 1954, Darce began to date a childhood friend, Camilla Pace. Camilla had married Bud Petty and they had a daughter named Carol. Camilla and Bud had divorced and Camilla and Carol were living with Camilla’s parents, just through the block in New Harmony. It was an easy courtship and in October 1954, Darce and Camilla were married. The children readily accepted Camilla as their new mom and Carol as their sister. She was just nine months younger than Annette and nine months older than Vernile. It was a big responsibility for Camilla to take on a new husband and three small children, but she adjusted well and provided a good home and nurturing environment for the family. Claudine started seventh grade in the fall of 1956 and took the bus to Cedar City to attend Cedar Junior High. The rest of the kids continued school in New Harmony. In April of 1957, the New Harmony School caught fire from a faulty furnace and burned to the ground. All twelve students finished the school year in a make-shift classroom in the church. The following year everyone was bussed to Cedar, with the younger students being assigned to the East Elementary. DARCE Darce continued to work at Jones Equipment in Cedar City and Camilla stayed at home to raise the family. A son, Brent Pace, was born to Darce and Camilla on September 17, 1959. In 1970, the farm equipment operations at Jones Equipment were discontinued and Darce was laid off. He then worked at the iron mines west of Cedar City until they closed in 1981, at which time he took a job in Tonopah, Nevada. Darce and Camilla commuted between there and New Harmony for several years until Darce retired in 1985. In early January of 1987, Camilla fell while making a trip to the kitchen during the night. She hit her head hard on the floor and the next morning was taken to St. George where it was determined that there was bleeding inside her skull. She was transferred to Las Vegas and it was thought she was improving, but she passed away during the night on January 7, 1989. Carol graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Elementary Education and took a job teaching in Grantsville, Utah. There she met Randy Addy and they have a son, Casey, who is in high school. Brent graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in Elementary Education Page 28

and has a home and a teaching career in St. George. He also has a business making and selling rusty metal art and sculpture. Darce married Marian Stephenson in 1989. They had a few good months together, but found they were not compatible and divorced in1992. Later in 1992, Darce was introduced to Donna Sampson, who was the mother of a young cougar hunting friend. They courted for a few months and were married on January 4, 1993. Darce continued in good health, maintaining the rural life in New Harmony that he loved. He enjoyed the cows and horses and raising a little alfalfa hay. During the winter he took his dogs and hunted cougars in the nearby mountains as often as possible. In 1993 Darce was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had prostate surgery in January of 1994. The surgery removed the cancer, but caused several other problems and required more surgery. He was still recovering strength when he had a mild stroke which impaired movement on his left side. After a lot of hard work and therapy, he regained the use of all muscles, lacking only some strength in his left arm and hand. Today Darce and Donna live in New Harmony where they continue to do a little farming and enjoy each other, reading and television.
