Ensto cares for the environment

Ensto follows all legal obligations concerning the environment in the countries where we operate. Environmental aspects are also taken into consideration in our product development and production, as well as in distribution and general office functions. Ensto Utility Networks factories have received both ISO 9001 Quality System Certificate and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Certificate.

All begins in product development

We develop products that last for decades. Our products endure various weather conditions, from icy cold to scorching heat. Long lasting products decrease the amount of scrap, energy needed to produce new products and expenditure of raw materials. Moreover, less capacity is needed in production.

Our goal is to create durable solutions for electricity distribution network building by combining various network building methods into a functional whole. Our product development designs and creates products in co-operation with our customers. We also use recycled materials whenever possible. In addition, Ensto is involved in a project that aims to decrease the losses in electricity distribution and this way, save energy.

Own test laboratory supports sustainable development

Ensto has renewed its laboratory facilities during the past few years. Our goal is to ensure that our products are of high quality and safe both in installation and during their lifetime. Our products fulfill the requirements of many national and international standards.

Ensto takes the environment into consideration in production and the office

We have production facilities in six countries. Our modern machinery enables more environmentally friendly production. Furthermore, we follow the environmental impact of our production with regular studies and reports. The energy that is created from waste disposal is directed to district heating network.

Production and the environment

In Ensto’s production facilities in Finland approximately 300 ton of brass and 100 ton of aluminum per year are recycled. Moreover, generated scrap is precipitated and pressed for reuse. All faulty parts and plastic raw materials are also sent for recycling. As cutting oil, Ensto uses environmentally friendly vegetable oils. When handling metal parts, we use a process of hot-dip galvanizing which is more environmentally friendly than zinc electroplating and which ensures that no toxins end up in nature. Furthermore, when making procurement agreements, we require a clarification from our suppliers on their companies’ environmental and ethical matters.

Also our properties have been made more energy efficient. In 2008, we focused on the pneumatic systems of our factories and on their energy efficiency and production reliability. Our next project is to improve the energy efficiency of our properties’ automatism.

Environmentally friendly facilities

Nature is taken into consideration also in our office facilities. For instance, the lights go out automatically when there is no movement in the office. We recycle all papers and cardboards, as well as favor low emission company cars.

Solutions that protect nature

We cooperate with electricity distribution and transmission companies to make electricity distribution networks more animal friendly. Our high quality, easy-to-install and low maintenance products take nature well into consideration. The products are made safe for installers and consumers and also for animals and nature.

Security to animals – reliability to electricity distribution

Animals cause many power cuts by bustling in the proximity of transformers and overhead lines. However, animal accidents and power cuts have been reduced greatly with modern protection devices. In electricity distribution, most problems are caused by squirrels. For instance, when squirrels end up on a transformer cover, they can cause not only power cuts but also fatal electric shocks to themselves. By preventing animal accidents, we can improve electricity distribution and save in repair costs.

Protective solutions reduce bird accidents

Because of their wide wing spans, large birds such as swans and hawks are in danger near electricity power lines. Also, for smaller birds, the overvoltage spark gaps of transformers can prove to be fatal resting places. According to BirdLife association, approximately 200 000 birds perish every year because of electricity power lines. To prevent these accidents, electricity and network companies have started taking active measures. For example, the bird protectors that are fixed directly on overhead lines are said to reduce bird deaths by 60 %. Moreover, for the protection of eagles Ensto has developed an eagle protection fixture which offers the birds a safe resting place far from live parts.

Protective PAS system Plastic-covered overhead cables without metal sheathing, also known as PAS/BLX cables, have been developed in order to improve the service reliability of electricity distribution and transmission. The advantages of PAS systems are fewer interruptions in electricity supply, narrower line corridors and lower costs. PAS systems protect forests

The impact of electricity networks on landscapes can be minimized by building them into narrower space with advanced overhead line systems. PAS cables can be installed to approximately 40 % narrower line corridors than standard bare conductors. Space is especially saved when using double line constructions. In forests, the required width of line corridors is as narrow as four meters which means that more trees can be preserved to provide visual and noise barriers. The PAS system is one of the most economic methods to build a reliable electricity distribution network in areas with large distances. It also sets less strain on the environment. More information about the PAS system and suitable Ensto products can be found in Ensto’s Accessories for Medium Voltage Distribution Networks brochure.
