The versatile and effective land drainage solution

Product Overview

Envirodrain® is the versatile solution to land drainage problems. The corrugated pipe wall is designed to provide maximum strength with minimum weight for ease of handling. The key to Envirodrain®’s versatility is its flexibility and because it’s supplied in long light weight coils, installation is fast and easy. Since Envirodrain® is flexible enough to be installed continuously around curves, the requirement for fittings is minimised. Flexibility also ensures that the pipe can accommodate ground movement without kinking or breaking. When correctly installed, the corrugated walls provide Envirodrain® sufficient strength to resist external loads, including soil, backfill and vehicle loads. Manufactured from either polyethylene or PVC-U, Envirodrain® is unaffected by corrosion in saline environments. High capacity infiltration of water along the entire length of the pipe is achieved by rows of drainage slots. These are punched into the ‘valleys’ of the corrugations as the pipe is extruded. Envirodrain® can be provided with a filter ‘sock’ to minimise silt built up, and is also available unslotted for use as a flexible drainage system where intrusion by fine tree roots may cause obstruction. Jumbo rolls are perfect for pipe plough installation for use in large area projects as they are coiled with a 300mm centre for despooling.

Dimensions Envirodrain® is manufactured to the dimensions specified in the Australian Standard AS 2439 Part 1, “Perforated Drainage Pipe and Associated Fittings” in sizes DN50, DN65, DN100 and DN160. It is available in three stiffness classes which relate to its ability to withstand external loads: SN4: for residential landscape drainage projects. SN8: for landscape, road construction or civil engineering works not subjected to heavy vehicular traffic. Pipe to this stiffness is manufactured from polyethylene. This stiffness is also recommended for agricultural drainage projects.

SN20: for similar works where heavy vehicular traffic is involved. Pipe to this stiffness is manufactured from PVC-U. This stiffness is normally used in road construction, infrastructure and mining projects. Table 1 – Product Codes & Dimensions Outside Diameter (mm)

Porous material

Design The table below provides an approximate guide for drain spacing relative to drain depth and soil type, for non-critical agricultural applications. Land utilisation considerations such as paddock area, crop or tree spacing and vehicular access must also be considered. Drainage of deep permeable soils depends on the water flowing through the soil mass directly into the drainage pipe. An envelope of granular aggregate around the pipe improves the flow of water into the pipe by increasing the effective diameter of the drain. In permeable soils water flows through the slots mainly at the sides and bottom of the pipe. It is therefore important that, where used, the gravel envelope should completely surround the pipe.

Product information Filter “Sock” Under some conditions, fine sand or soil particles may flow into the pipe with the water and result in reduced flow in a pipe laid to a shallow gradient. Under these conditions it may be advantageous to use a woven fabric filter “sock” to screen such particles. An additional benefit is that the filter sock can stretch over the corrugations of the Envirodrain®, increasing the effective water access area to the pipe. Filter sock is supplied in two grades, Standard Polyester (which can be identified by the red stripe through the sock) and Heavy Duty Polyester RTA approved (which features a green stripe). The filter sock can be purchased fitted to the slotted pipe or separately. All coils supplied with filter sock are packaged in a protective bag. Unslotted Envirodrain® Where the pipe passes through areas where fine tree root intrusion may cause obstruction, unslotted Envirodrain® can be used.

Installation The long coil length of Envirodrain® combined with its lightweight and flexibility means it can be rapidly installed. Envirodrain® should be installed at or above the impermeable clay layer as, water will migrate down along the impermeable layer to the lowest point. The cut-off drain should be installed across the slop and perpendicular to the groundwater movement. A drain could also be made from the low point to a soak pit or connected to the stormwater drainage system. The drainage system must not be connected to the sewerage system. Envirodrain® should be placed in its trench on a graded bed of granular material, approximately 50mm deep. For 200mm either side of the pipe and to a distance of at least 150mm above it, it is recommended that permeable, reasonably compacted free flowing granular material, be used. This will provide the pipe the necessary haunch support and allow free drainage of groundwater. The maximum aggregate size recommended in this zone is 13mm. Impermeable clay or organic material such as straw, woodchips, sawdust etc., must not be used. The remainder of the trench should be filled with a pervious fill, and well compacted to ensure there is no subsidence at the surface. Heavy clay is difficult to compact and may restrict the flow of soil water to the pipe. Typical installation for retaining wall drainage

The maximum burial depth for Envirodrain® depends on the quality of the support the pipe receives from embedment. Note: SN4 and SN8 Polyethylene Envirodrain® and Envirostorm® will float in water; therefore in wet conditions it is advisable to backfill the trench as the pipe is laid.

Also Available

Envirostorm® Envirostorm® is a flexible stormwater pipe used for temporary down pipes or dispersing of stormwater. It is manufactured from virgin UV resistant white polypropylene and available in 100mm diameter x 30m coils. Product Code: 1800010030

Product information Joining Coils of Envirodrain® are provided with a moulded coupler to allow them to be joined quickly and securely. A range of PE clip on fittings such as joiners, 45 degree junctions, tees, 4-way crosses, adaptors and couplers are available for Envirodrain®. Alternatively, a jointing collar can be made by cutting off a piece of Envirodrain®, approximately 250mm in length and slitting it on one side longitudinally. This collar can then be snapped over the two lengths of Envirodrain® to be joined and, if necessary, bound with light wire. When joining socked Envirodrain®, pull back the sock and join pipe with socket. Pull one end of the sock over the joint one way and then the other end of the sock over the other way. Tie with string or cable tie to secure the sock over the pipe.

Bending Envirodrain® can be curved to a radius as tight as three times the nominal diameter of the pipe. This flexibility minimises the requirement for separate fittings.
