Chapter 1

Introducing the Enterprise Service Manager The Enterprise Service Manager (ESM) is a management system that lets you centrally monitor, administer, and maintain networked recorders within your organization. The ESM monitors recorders on the network, ensuring the VideoSphere applications have up-to-date IP addresses, which may be required to access networked recorders with dynamic IP addresses. It also allows you to create and manage detailed user permissions, which let you control user access to applications and platforms. For organizations with a large number of networked recorders, the ESM supports the connection of the Administrator Console, which is a client application that lets you manage, configure, and maintain multiple recorders from a central location. This introduction provides information about:

• •

“Understanding How the ESM Works” on page 2. “Setting Up ESM Environments” on page 2.

Understanding How the ESM Works The ESM maintains connections with networked recorders to continuously monitor their health, current IP addresses, and status.

Communicating With the ESM Using the March Networks Software By forwarding up-to-date recorder IP addresses to the VideoSphere applications, the ESM ensures that the VideoSphere client applications can always communicate with the recorders that have been registered with it. This allows the VideoSphere client applications to communicate with the recorders on external networks. When connected to the ESM, the VideoSphere client applications automatically show a list of all recorders monitored by the ESM and to which the user has access. For more information, see the Administrator Console User Manual or online Help.

Configuring the ESM Using the Administrator Console The Administrator Console, a management tool for system administrators, lets you configure both the recorder and ESM. For more information, see the Administrator Console User Manual or online Help.

Setting Up ESM Environments There are several ways you can set up the ESM in a networked environment, depending on whether you are working with recorders installed on an internal or external network.

Internal Networks On an internal network such as a corporate LAN/WAN, install the ESM on the network where the recorders are located. It is preferred that the computer on which you are installing the ESM have a static IP address. NOTE: If the ESM does not have a static IP address, you will have to use hostnames in its

address zones. For more information, contact your network administrator.

External Networks If you are working with recorders that are installed at remote sites and are not directly connected to your network, install the ESM on a computer that can be accessed through the Internet. For example, install the ESM on a computer running on a DMZ network.

2

Enterprise Service Manager Installation Guide

If you are working with recorders installed on both an internal and external network, you can configure the ESM with address zones, which let you specify how the ESM connects to the recorders. For more information, see the Administrator Console User Manual or online help. We recommend you change the password for the “radmin” user account on each recorder or encoder, as it is used to log onto the provisioning interface remotely. For more information, see the setpass command in the Provisioning Interface Technical Instructions. Before you set up the ESM environment, ensure you understand the security issues associated with using a network that can be accessed through the Internet. For more information about network security, contact your network administrator. For more information, see “Setting Up the ESM” on page 10.

System Requirements Before you install the ESM, ensure your system meets the following minimum requirements:

• • • • •

3.0 GHz processor 4.0 GB RAM CD-ROM drive 10/100 Mbps Ethernet card Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 or 2008 operating system

In addition to the above, the People Counting Reporting Web service requires the following:

Internet Information Services (IIS)  If you are using Microsoft Windows Server 2008, you must use IIS version 7.0 including ASP.NET, and ensure that you select the “IIS 6.0 Management Compatibility” role service during the IIS 7.0 installation.  If you are using Windows Server 2003, you use IIS version 6.0. .NET Framework The version must be compatible with the Windows Server operating system you are using (2003 or 2008).

In addition to the above, the Seproban Alarm Management Service requires a varying amount of free hard drive space, which is calculated using the following formula: dataRetentionDays*(realAlarmsOneDay*15 + falseAlarmsOneDay*8) MB

where: dataRetentionDays is the number of days you want to retain the alarm video and images (the default value is 7)  realAlarmsOneDay is the average number of alarms you receive in a day  falseAlarmsOneDay is the average number of false alarms you receive in a day 

NOTE: This formula is based on the assumption that a typical alarm lasts about two

minutes. NOTE: We recommend you install the ESM on a computer with a static IP address. For

more information, see the documentation accompanying the Microsoft Windows operating system. Virus scanning software, which may periodically use an increased amount of CPU resources, may impact the ESM’s performance during high usage periods. If you experience any performance issues, we recommend you contact your IT department to reconfigure your virus scanning software. Please note that the ESM may create or update the following files, which should not be blocked by your antivirus software: • .dat or .dat.bak—Data files • .pem—Encryption files • .db, .db-journal, .dbf, .cdx, .log, .seq—Database files • .txt in the service user’s TEMP directory—Application log files

Setting Up the ESM By default, the ESM uses port 443 for connections from the other servers in the cluster (if there are any), recorders, and the VideoSphere client applications. It is possible to change the default port or specify additional ports for the ESM to use. The ESM’s People Counting Reporting Web service uses port 8080. Firewalls must be configured to forward the ports the ESM uses, such as the default port (443), to the server. For more information, contact your network administrator. The following diagram shows a simple network scenario:

10

Enterprise Service Manager Installation Guide

Modifying the ESM’s Port Settings You can change the ESM’s port settings with a text editor, such as Notepad. WARNING: Only advanced users should attempt to modify the ESM’s port settings, as

changes may affect the ESM’s ability to communicate among servers in a cluster and the recorders and VideoSphere client applications that try to connect to the ESM. To modify the ESM’s port settings 1. Using a text editor, such as Notepad, open Watchdog.cfg (the configuration file for the

MN Watchdog process), which is located in the following directory by default: C:\Program Files\MarchNetworks\WatchDog 2. Add, modify, or remove ports by changing port entries, which are in the format “port#=[port number]” To...

Do the following

Add a port

Add an additional port entry. If the last port entry is port2, for example, enter port3 under it, and then specify a port number to assign to it. The port entries must start at port1 and continue without gaps in numbering.

Modify a port

Replace the number next to an existing port entry with a new one. Do not modify port1=443. If you do not want the ESM to listen on port 443, see “To stop the ESM from listening on port 443”.

Remove a port

Delete a port entry. Do not remove port1=443.

3. Save and then close the file. 4. Stop and then restart the MN Watchdog process to update the ESM. For more

information, see “Starting and Stopping the ESM” on page 15. To stop the ESM from listening on port 443 1. Using a text editor, such as Notepad, open Watchdog.cfg, which is located in the

following directory by default: C:\Program Files\MarchNetworks\WatchDog 2. Add a new port entry. 3. Save and then close the file. 4. Include the port number alongside the IP addresses in the ESM’s address zones, which can be changed through the Administrator Console, and apply the settings. For more information about address zones, see the Administrator Console User Manual or online Help. If a port number is not specified, any other ESM servers in the cluster (if there are any) and recorders will attempt to communicate with the ESM through port 443. You can connect to an ESM with an IP address like 10.51.176.163 with a VideoSphere client application, because the application assumes that the port number is 443. If you

11

5. 6.

7. 8.

want to connect to the ESM through port 444, for example, you will need to connect to the ESM using the IP address and port you specify, such as 10.51.176.163:444. For more information, see the Administrator Console User Manual or online help. Stop and then restart the MN Watchdog process to update the ESM. For more information, see “Starting and Stopping the ESM” on page 15. When all recorders have contacted the ESM, remove the port1=443 entry, and then renumber the existing port entries to start at port1 and continue without gaps in numbering. For more information, see “To modify the ESM’s port settings”. If you remove the port1=443 port entry before updating the ESM’s address zones and ensuring all recorders have received them, some or all of the recorders may not be able to connect to the ESM, because they will not have the updated information. Save and then close the file. Stop and then restart the MN Watchdog process to update the ESM. For more information, see “Starting and Stopping the ESM” on page 15.

NOTE: If the ESM is instructed not to listen on port 443 before the address zones have

been changed, and all the recorders have received the new settings, some or all of the recorders will be unable to connect to the ESM. To correct this issue, instruct the ESM to listen on port 443, and then follow the steps in the above procedure.
