EMC SAN Copy

Enterprise data mobility to meet today’s demanding business requirements The Big Picture

• Server-independent, cross-platform data movement utilizing high-speed SAN infrastructure • Incremental capabilities demand less bandwidth and provide faster updates for long-distance WAN copies

• Fast distribution of production data for application testing and development • Content distribution and content collection for maximum operational efficiencies

• Enables information consolidation across multiple platforms, locations, and geographies

Information: Where you need it...when you need it. EMC SAN Copy™ enables businesses to quickly and easily move data from one storage system to another without the use of critical application server cycles or local area network bandwidth. SAN Copy provides server- and platform-independent copy and movement capabilities over the storage area network (SAN) or wide area network (WAN via FC/IP) and is designed to assist you in meeting your evolving business needs. Data can move between CLARiiON® systems and within a single CLARiiON system; between CLARiiON and Symmetrix® storage systems; and between EMC and other vendors’ storage arrays (HPQ, IBM, Sun) for the utmost in deployment flexibility. And, SAN Copy eliminates the impact to production activities by utilizing EMC SnapView™ along with TimeFinder™ copies as sources for the data movement process so applications remain online throughout the entire data movement operation.

SAN Copy helps simplify your IT operations while increasing business process efficiencies • Data consolidation from distributed locations to a centralized location • Move applications or data to a different storage platform • Data relocation for workload balancing or tiering service levels • Local and remote data relocation • Incremental data migration from one CLARiiON array to another CLARiiON • Porting new applications from test environments to production use • Long distance, incremental or full LUN bulk data copy • Data distribution from centralized to distributed locations • Change RAID protection schemes

Simple yet powerful configurations SAN Copy, running on an EMC CLARiiON networked storage system, communicates with other storage systems and data via World Wide Names. SAN Copy supports local data movement over the SAN and extended distance data movement over the Wide Area Network (WAN) via common FC-to-IP conversion. The data movement is performed at the block level for high-speed copying over the SAN or WAN. SAN Copy moves full LUNs/volumes or incremental updates from system to system. This means a CLARiiON can freely move all forms of information. SAN Copy has the flexibility to move data within CLARiiON storage platforms, between CLARiiON and other storage platforms, and between two non-CLARiiON storage platforms.

Data movement without impacting production SAN Copy ensures that valuable server cycles are reserved for servicing applications and user requests by performing data copying and movement as a function of storage. SAN Copy easily distributes data without interruption to production while protecting server CPU cycles and preventing LAN bandwidth bottlenecks. SAN Copy operates independently of application servers and therefore doesn’t steal cycles from those applications through unnecessary file transfer overhead.

SAN Copy supports data movement between CLARiiON systems, between CLARiiON and Symmetrix systems, and even between HPQ, IBM, and Sun storage arrays, giving you the flexibility to deploy a data mobility configuration that includes all your data center, regional, and/or distributed systems—no matter how close or far apart they are.

SAN Copy can use point-in-time “source data” for the movement from SnapView snapshots and BCVs, TimeFinder BCVs and TimeFinder Snapshots, and/or an idle production LUN to create a consistent point-in-time image of data while providing continuous application access to production data. SAN Copy provides faster incremental updates, copying only the changes since the last SAN Copy session out to any supported array (EMC, HP, IBM, or Sun target LUNs. Source LUN must exist in a SAN Copy-hosted CLARiiON array: CX700, CX500, CX600, CX400, or FC4700).

Flexibility to move and copy enormous amounts of information SAN Copy is extremely flexible, enabling you to configure an environment that meets your specific business requirements. You can execute up to 16 simultaneous active copy sessions per SAN Copy application. A single SAN Copy session can support up to 100 destination LUNs or volumes in each session, allowing you to move or update large numbers of LUNs and volumes at one time. SAN Copy also allows you to start, pause, and resume copy operations with continuous checkpoints so each time you resume the copy process it picks up from the point it was stopped, ensuring data integrity. Should you need to perform SAN Copy operations during periods of heavy system usage, you can use EMC Navisphere® management software to throttle the priority of the SAN Copy operation relative to the other activities on the system.

Content distribution and centralized collection SAN Copy is highly optimized to move and copy data between systems across the SAN or between distributed locations via the WAN. For example, SAN Copy is ideal for retail establishments that need to copy field-related store sales and inventory data back to the corporate data center each evening to populate a data warehouse or for decision-support systems. Then, each morning, pricing and inventory updates can be incrementally distributed to each of the field locations, thus ensuring each is working from the same data for the day’s sales. Moving only the changed data blocks lowers bandwidth demand and gets the data updated very fast.

EMC can help architect the right solution for your particular business needs. SAN Copy, combined with the CLARiiON and Symmetrix platforms, connectivity, and business continuity software can deliver data mobility and data protection to all areas of your business.

Distributed application testing and development with the freshest data In many organizations, application developers are not co-located, yet they require copies of the same data to code and test against in order to maintain consistency. In most cases, SnapView and TimeFinder enable them to create multiple, non-disruptive point-in-time copies or snapshots of their production data to use for testing. Today, because SAN Copy can utilize these point-in-time copies as sources for data movement, you can easily move and/or copy test data between distributed development and test organizations. Testing efforts become more efficient by providing a timely copy of the production information in the test environment via full LUN or incremental update copy technologies. Testing on real versus simulated data yields greater accuracy and higher levels of confidence in the new or upgraded applications.

Data relocation for resource-level balancing and tuning Business requirements and IT requirements change over time. It is important to have the flexibility to meet those changing requirements. SAN Copy allows IT to manage changes as they occur with minimal disruption to operations. SAN Copy’s efficient data movement and relocation capabilities assist in storage management tasks such as resource balancing, addition of different-sized disk capacities, and even hot spindle tuning. And, when resource leveling between storage systems, SAN Copy alleviates lengthy data outages caused by the need to transport data to another system or location.

Simplified management through one centralized interface Managing multiple storage systems and associated storage-based software and related processes should not require multiple instances of different management applications. EMC Navisphere can manage all your storage tasks, local and remote replication activities, data mobility processes, LUN creation, access control, and other storage management features, all from one easy-to-use graphical user interface. EMC Navisphere allows you to manage all CLARiiON-related activities—from system management to all your SnapView, MirrorView, and SAN Copy sessions—from a centralized Web browser. If your infrastructure has both CLARiiON and Symmetrix systems, EMC ControlCenter™ can manage both the CLARiiON and Symmetrix systems from one location.
