CURTISS-WRIGHT FLOW CONTROL COMPANY

defense For more than a century, the business units of Curtiss-Wright Flow Control have helped protect America with an expanding array of innovative technologies, products, and solutions.

We began in 1847, selling steam-powered pumps for Navy vessels. Our role in the skies can be traced to company founder Glenn Curtiss, whose technological innovations in naval aviation during the early 1900s paved the way for the air superiority that remains an important part of America’s defenses. In the early 1950s, we helped design and build systems for the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. Today our high-performance products can be found aboard nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers commissioned by the U.S. Navy. Our partnership with the Navy continues as a significant supplier of components for multiple applications on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and Virginia-class submarines, as well as the next generation CVN-78 Ford-class aircraft carriers. Looking forward, we are developing and supplying key subsystems as part of the Navy’s next generation carrier platform. Our energy storage rotor is part of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System and is a critical component of the aircraft launch system, replacing the legacy steam catapult. Our innovative low inertia motor for the Advanced Arresting Gear enables the more efficient arrestment and recovery of aircraft on carrier decks. We’ve partnered with the Army on the development of an advanced power supply for an electro-magnetic weapons system. We continue to support the entire naval fleet with leading edge pumping, propulsion, and valve and control systems solutions. Our wide ranging experience in defense-related technologies has given us a unique appreciation of the enormous responsibilities inherent in serving this market. It is an arena where our products must meet the most rigorous standards, operating for the life of the ship without maintenance and where failure is simply not an option. Over the decades, our dedication and drive has allowed us to establish customer relationships which have resulted in generations of successful programs.

Note: Curtiss-Wright Flow Control Company does not sell Navy technology to commercial customers.

The Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) is an integrated supplier of advanced, critical function motors, generators, and pumps to the oil and gas and chemical process industries. EMD systems are specified when high reliability, long life expectancy, low maintenance, and harsh environment operation are required. EMD brings military performance and reliability to the challenges of offshore oil and gas production. As offshore and subsea oil production extends into deeper waters and harsher environments, EMD pumps are used to accelerate production rates, increase recovery and also create an economically attractive alternative to costly

topside platforms. EMD is also a leader in power system design, simulation and modeling, including subsea applications. One of EMD’s innovations, a submerged hazardous waste pump utilizing canned motor technology, eliminated the need for externally supplied cooling and lubricating systems. At waste storage sites in Washington and South Carolina, the long life and high reliability of this unit has contributed to dramatic cost savings in hazardous waste transfer. EMD is also working with industry leaders in hydrocarbon processing to develop advanced pumps for critical toxic applications.
