maintenance procedures Cleaning - Sterilisation

• Clean external surfaces with isopropyl alcohol • Clean the plunger, seal and o-ring with distilled water.

88

• Loosen shaft nut • Autoclave at 121°C/0.1mPa/20 min. • Fasten shaft nut.

12 12

Cleaning the Plunger

• Take out plunger assembly from the shaft • Remember the order in which parts were assembled.

• Clean the plunger, o-ring and seal with distilled water • Cover the plunger with thin coat of grease.

• Relocate piston assembly and tighten locking nut • Pipette few times to let the parts position themselves.

Recalibration

• Determine temperature and pressure • Use distilled water • Determine inaccuracy error with an analytical balance (refer to manual).

• Remove the push-button • Insert calibration key • Holding thumbwheel, turn the calibration key as determined in manual.

• Check aspiration of the pipette.

maintenance procedures volume adjustment

88 • Push-button volume adjustment for fast counter rewinding.

• Single hand thumbwheel operation for precise volume setting.

• When setting the volume always decrease counter readout, ie reduce from higher setting to desired volume level.

• Adjustment of ejector stroke in 5 ml and 10 ml pipettes (+ejector caps).

• Application of ejector cap for narrow 10 μl tips and for low sealing 5 ml and 10 ml tips.

12 12

ejector adjustment

• If necessary, change spacers for non-Axygen 10 μl, 200 μl, 300 μl and 1000 μl tips.

autoclaving - AXYPET® is fully autoclavable • Loosen the shaft nut for autoclaving.

• Let the pipette cool down and dry after autoclaving. Don’t forget to tighten the shaft nut afterwards.

Comments / FAQ • Gilson sales force tends to use this argument against other pipette manufacturers. “Pipetman does Is grease on the not use grease because it could become a source of sample cross contamination. All others are plunger a potential bad cause they use grease” . This argument is completely false, having sold over 2 million pipettes, source of cross HTL/Axygen has never faced such a quality claim. Additionally, it may be worthwhile pointing out contamination? that Gilson’s newest pipette - Pipetman Ultra recommends the use grease as well! We can send you Gilson Ultra manual copy if you need to prove it. Is new Pipetman Neo a big improvement?

• Gilson Pipetman Neo is just a “cosmetically” improved Gilson Pipetman. Gilson reduced its pipetting force (still much higher than AXYPET) and added coloured push-buttons. After all, it’s the same Gilson Pipetman, so easy to beat!

Comments / FAQ Is Gilson Ultra LCD an important innovation in pipette industry?

LCD is “fancy”. It is advertised as a pro GLP feature (allowing the counting of pipetting cycles). However, its practical usefullness is questionable and is judged as such by many pipette users. By application of electronic components in Pipetman Ultra Gilson lost itself of its major strength – benchmark durability and reliability! Comments / FAQ Is Rainin Classic going to take over Gilson Pipetman market?

Rainin created an almost exact copy of Gilson Pipetman with all its weaknesses. Only its handle is slightly more comfortable due to its elongated, wide finger rest. Its operational forces are very high, its Accuracy and Precision rates are wider than AXYPET and its components are not fully autoclavable. AXYPET is more likely to address the needs of Gilson Pipetman users (depending on pipette model) together with systems allowing for effective reduction of ejection force - (EZIject) in single channel pipettes allowing more natural thumb movement - Moveable cones in multichannel pipettes allowing secure, even seal on all shafts with minimal force

Without doubt, Pipet Lite has a reputation of a very ergonomic pipette. LTS tip ejection forces are lowest in the industry. On the other hand it is perceived as pipette dedicated only to LTS tips. AXYPET offers similar or lower pipetting

Is Pipet Lite volume counter lock the only AXYPET’s rotational top section of the push-button prevents volume change effectively and removes the need to perform additional operations - locking/unlocking prevention against accidental volume change?

Comments / FAQ Some users believe that Eppendorf pipettes are the most reliable (repeatability + durability) in the marketplace

Don’t feel overwhelmed. Eppendorf brand is enhanced by its German origin and a good track record of their equipment reliability. Eppendorf pipettes are not “problem free” . Their ejectors break off through wear, their counters break when over-wound. With Axygen’s existing brand reputation, plus AXYPET’s outstanding durability, better ergonomics and repeatability you can offer an attractive and cost-effective, alternative to Eppendorf pipetting systems.

Comments / FAQ Is mLine the most ergonomic pipette as claimed by Biohit? How to sell against mLine?

It is true that mLine pipettes offer lowest pipetting forces in the industry. However, they are not perfect from ergonomic & practical points of view though. Their flattened handle forces the user to hold the pipette in a very specific way (with finger hook facing aside). This technique is unfriendly and not very popular amongst end users. Don’t feel overwhelmed by mLine lowest pipetting forces. AXYPET is second best in the world. Most importantly we offer a unique combination of ergonomics, durability and repeatability. Biohit has a reputation of low reliability of their equipment – try to exploit it. Customers dislike the multichannel series as the tip cones dislodge easily and require constant service support.

Comparison of plunger Forces, 1000µl

1 Well, maybe the idea is good, but definitely not the one engineered by Finnpipette. Its adjustable handle system falls apart quite often when it is dropped. Additionally it is very hard to put the parts back together. 2. The experience of both Finnpipette and Capp which introduced their new pipettes in short shafted format proved that they were wrong. Their customers demanded short shafts for easier operation, but they quickly realised that they lack the reach in narrow tubes. Short shafted pipettes were disliked by the majority of users and Finnpipette and Capp immediately started developing the long shafted lines. An optimal shaft length, as used by AXYPET, seems to be the best approach. 3. The system requires the user to turn two mechanisms to set the volume (push-button to move first two digits and the collar below the push-button to move the last digit). It is almost impossible to perform the operation with one hand. Additionally it is hard to turn the volume setting collar (called by some users “the nail breaker”

Comments / FAQ Is Nichiryo volume setting lock a practical solution? Does Nichiryo stand up to the reputation of high quality, practicality and reliability of Japanese products?

Comparison of plunger Forces, 200µl

1. Volume adjusted only using push-button - no thumbwheel for fine adjustment. Some end users are attracted by the volume lock as in Nichiryo or Rainin Pipet Lite. In their opinion, only this mechanism guarantees that the volume setting would not change during prolonged pipetting sessions. They are wrong. The rotational top of AXYPET push-button fully prevents accidental volume change as well. It works as well as the lock but does not force the users to perform additional operations (locking / unlocking). Not surprisingly the volume lock (which has the tendency to jam if excessive force is applied, and can be quite painful to fingers) is the feature most commonly criticised by users working with Nichiryo pipettes 2. Despite marketing efforts of the manufacturer this pipette does not enjoy strong brand recognition. It’s low ergonomics, questionable volume lock and unpractical ejector fixing mechanism are criticised by the users. Furthermore Nichiryo pipettes are a nightmare to calibrate. 3. Volume button too small and tedious to grip when adjusting volumes. 4. A very heavy pipette, with very unspectacular specification.

Easy calibration system, but mechanism is fragile

Comments / FAQ • A reasonably well specified products. However, being of completely plastic construction, it does not enjoy the durability of AXYPET. Because of the positioning of the ejector button, it forces the user into a side pipetting position unlike the conventional situation where the ejector button is at the rear - this will definitely not suit everyone and should be exploited. • Not found in every market
