Invitation & Welcome Greeting

2

The three major Hungarian Associations active in the field of the protection of intellectual property have decided to jointly organize an international conference on the new trends and challenges in the enforcement of IP rights with the objective of providing an in-depth analysis and a platform for exchanging information and experience between speakers and attendees from the three major segments of IP: patents, trademarks and copyright. The present conference is the updated and improved continuation of the traditional series of AIPPI-MIE conferences, which have been organized regularly in every third year at the beginning of September since 1970, wherein the last 12th conference took place in September 2003. The three Associations responsible for the conference are: the Hungarian Group of AIPPI; MIE, the Hungarian Association for the Protection of Industrial Property and Copyright; and MSZJF, the Hungarian Copyright Forum (the Hungarian Group of ALAI). This year, the 13th conference will be different from its 12 predecessors from several aspects:

• While previous conferences have focused on different non-related segments of IP law, the present conference should cover current issues of enforcing IP laws to demonstrate the specific problems and approaches required for enforcing copyright, patents and trademarks so that attendees will be given an overall view concerning all these fields. At the same time, the respective specific sessions will enable each attendee to obtain an in-depth view on his or her specific field of interest. There will be sufficient time for discussing problems defined on site and to exchange information. • The format of the conference will change, compared to that of the previous ones. Attendees can easily reach Budapest till the afternoon of the first day, Thursday, September 8, and before the opening reception held in the evening the formal opening followed by three keynote addresses will provide an introductory frame for the following days. Friday, in the morning, a plenary session will be held for all attendees sketching the basic issues of enforcing rights in the three different fields. In the afternoon, the conference will continue in three parallel sessions (patent, trademark and copyright), wherein respective moderators and experienced speakers will provide panel discussions on the specific issues on the concerned segment of IP enforcement. Saturday morning the moderators will summarise the work of the Friday afternoon sessions so that each attendee can have a view on the events of the other two sessions. The plenary session will cover the remaining issues in the three segments, and a final discussion will close the work of the conference.

Invitation & Welcome Greeting

• The 2004 enlargement of the European Union has greatly affected the laws and practice also in the IP field and has brought a number of new challenges, including the adaptation of the new member countries to the EU rules, the major eastward shift of the common border and the impact of the forthcoming accession of further countries. In this period the Internet revolution has continued and provided an ever increasing platform both for legal and illegal users of IP rights requesting thereby a new approach concerning enforcement of IP rights.

Invitation & Welcome Greeting

3

• The venue will also be new; Hotel Intercontinental, the pearl of the hotels at the Danube coast in the heart of the city with its new conference facilities will host the conference and will provide accommodation for the attendees. Sunday morning, an optional excursion will be available for those who can leave in the afternoon or next day. Buses will continue to the airport following a lunch. In the name of the Organizing Committee we wish you a pleasant stay in Budapest. Yours sincerely

Dr. Gabriella Sasvári Deputy Chairperson
