Energy Drinks VS Sports Drinks

E3 Sports

These days, sports nutrition foods and drinks emphasize more on general health rather than performance. With the favorable attitude of customers towards exercise, the definition of sports and fitness nutrition products also started changing. Younger generation, health conscious consumers, soccer moms, and weekend fitness warriors are now a part of the core consumer cluster. However, focus in this segment is still to a significant extent on the traditional customer group such as athletes, as such customers due to their greater awareness and understanding of the products, constitute the early adopters and also loyal customers for such products. While the newer groups of customers comprising non-professional sportspersons, recreational users, casual athletes, gym-goers, women seeking fitness control, young adults, or weekend fitness enthusiasts and other users, use such products to receive a boost in stamina and enhance overall physical and mental performance or as a preventive measure against illness, the traditional group uses the products to gain targeted benefits such as muscle enhancement or for post-workout recovery, among others.

As stated by the new market research report on Sports and Fitness Nutrition Foods and Drinks, the United States constitutes the largest market worldwide. Favorable demographics, aging baby boomers and a sedentary lifestyle are the major growth promoters of the fitness industry in the country. The sports nutrition market witnessed exponential growth over the years due to new innovations, novel packaging and marked changes in consumer preferences. Sports supplements and sports nutrition functional foods are among the leading categories exhibiting strong growth. Latin America represents the fastest growing regional market displaying a CAGR of about 8.5% over the analysis period. Despite accounting for a small portion of the world’s food and beverage market, Latin America is expected to emerge as the hotspot in the coming years. The market for sports and energy drinks in Latin America is expected to surge in the near future primarily due to rising income levels, increased focus on health and wellness and willingness of consumers to spend on the category. The beverage industry is experiencing some major changes heading into 2016. Sugary sodas are under fire. Juice sales are slipping. Many of the brightest points are new brands and beverages that no one had heard of a few years ago. In other words, it’s a dramatic time to be in the world of beverages.

Energy Drinks When it comes to buying sport drinks or energy drinks it really can be difficult to choose. It is no secret that energy drink companies spend millions upon millions advertising their product to anyone and everyone who is willing to buy it, consume it, Facebook it, Tweet it, whichever way you “say it” the millions spent are obviously paying off. Let us take a look at Red Bull for example. As of this writing they have about 46,458,577 “Likes” on their Facebook page and 2.4 million followers on twitter. Now with those kind of numbers is easy to say their millions spent in marketing is having an impact. Now look at PowerAde. As of this writing they have 4,901,823 “Likes” on their Facebook page and 152K followers on twitter. Do you see the problem here? Of course when an athlete first thinks of a drink they are going to think along the lines of Red Bull, but do we really know how bad these energy drinks are for us?

With the amount of marketing and the different number of drinks available, it could be like trying to choose a simple cup of coffee at Starbucks. What these companies are not sharing with you are the potential dangers of energy drinks and the advantages of drinking sports drinks. Energy drinks are marketed toward people who desire a boost in energy. According to an article in the issue of "Pediatrics," 30 to 50 percent of adolescents and young adults reportedly consume energy drinks. Common energy drinks include Red Bull, Monster, Amp, Rockstar and 5-hour Energy. The main ingredients in these drinks are caffeine and sugar. Energy drinks will help you overcome fatigue, but they may be hazardous to your health. Caffeine is often a major ingredient and a 24-ounce energy drink may contain as much as 500 milligrams of caffeine—close to the caffeine in five cups of coffee. Another fact to consider: Between 2007 and 2011, the number of energy-drink related visits to emergency departments doubled, with the biggest increase coming from people aged 40 or over. Energy drinks may temporarily improve alertness and physical endurance, but the after-effects can be serious. The typical energy drink contains significantly more carbohydrate and calories than the typical sports drink and gets most or all of those carbs and calories from one or two sugars, such as high fructose corn syrup (a blend of fructose and glucose). For example, Red Bull contains 26 grams of carbs, all sugar, per 8.3-oz serving, while Gatorade contains 16 g of carbs per 8-oz. serving, of which 13 g are sugar. Because of their higher carbohydrate concentration and their heavy use of fructose, energy drinks are much more likely than sports drinks to cause stomach upset during exercise. Many energy drinks are also carbonated, further increasing the associated risk of GI distress. The immense popularity of energy drinks and the widespread use of caffeine by athletes has started many sports drink company executives to thinking. The result has been the recent emergence of a new sports nutrition category of pre-workout primers. Currently, most such products are marketed to bodybuilders, who are notoriously supplement happy and who like to show up at the gym ready to bite the heads off bats. But the category is expanding into mainstream and endurance sports.

Sports Drinks Sports drinks are designed to rehydrate competitive athletes during workouts, training and competition. Comprised mostly of water, these beverages also contain a mixture of carbohydrates for energy, and electrolytes to ensure proper muscle function. Rehydration is the major requirement during exercise as performance deteriorates rapidly with even low levels of dehydration. Minerals such as sodium and potassium are also frequently added to replace those lost through sweat. Replacing the electrolytes lost during exercise promotes proper rehydration, which is important in delaying the onset of fatigue. Sports drinks can restore carbohydrate that the body uses during activity. Sports drinks often contain carbohydrate in the form of sugar, as well as electrolytes and minerals and sometimes protein, vitamins, or caffeine. Water Water is the primary ingredient in all sports drinks, and everyone participating in athletic activities needs to ensure proper hydration. Dietitians recommend water as the best source of rehydration for most people. Sugars Sucrose, dextrose, fructose and glucose are simple sugars found in sports drinks. Sugars are basic carbohydrates that provide energy to the brain, nervous system and muscles. During workouts, muscles burn through the body’s stores of glucose. The simple sugars provided by sports drinks are easily broken down and utilized by the muscles for energy. Effect on Energy While each has an effect on energy levels, sports and energy drinks provide this energy in different ways. Carbohydrates in sports drinks feed your muscles, while electrolytes supply essential chemicals you lose by sweating. This is the type of energy enables you to sustain physical activity for longer periods. In contrast, caffeine affects your central nervous system and therefore your brain. In this way, caffeine

provides a type of short-term pseudo-energy, as your mind tells your body to go whether or not you have the physical capability to do so. When the effects of the energy drink begin to wear off, so does your energy level. Electrolyte Replacement When you exercise, your body becomes depleted in nutrients like potassium and magnesium -- both of which help prevent muscle cramping and weakness. If you get low on electrolytes, you increase your risk of injury. Most sports drinks come packed full of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes to keep you replenished. This is one major advantage they have over water. Taste One of the best advantages a sports drink can offer is taste. While you may not grudgingly drink plenty of water during exercise, you won’t get as much pleasure from plain water as you will from a drink with flavor. A delicious sports drink will make it more likely that you'll consume it more often, helping you prevent dehydration. Before and After a Workout In some cases, a sports drink can serve as a pre-workout energy boost if you haven't eaten in several hours. For example, if you exercise first thing in the morning but don't have time or can't tolerate a preworkout snack, a sports drink like provides some fuel for your session. After a hard workout, you need carbohydrates to refill the stores of energy you just burned -- especially if you have another workout on tap later in the afternoon or the next day. Sports Drinks can serve as a quick source of these post-workout carbs. After your workout, you'll also want to have a serving of protein along with the sports drink to help repair muscle fibers and stimulate muscle growth.

There were two major players in the Sports Drink Arena. Gatorade which controls about 69.5% market share and Powerade has 28.8% market share, which is about 97% combined market share.

The sports beverage market – an overview According to March 2015 data from the Beverage Marketing Corporation, US sports drink volumes grew by 3.0%, crossing 1.4 billion gallons of volume. The sports beverage category exceeded 1.0 billion gallons in volume for the first time in 2011. Although the category growth has slowed down, sports drinks are still performing better than carbonated soft drinks (or CSDs), the largest category in the liquid refreshment beverage (or LRB) market. Derived from the sugar beet, Palatinose boosts metabolism, which reduces body fatness, while at the same time contributing to the reduction of muscle damage and improvement of athletic performance. We know that carbohydrates are prime fuel for sustained energy. Studies with Palatinose have shown that the slow release of glucose can benefit endurance athletes who need a continuous source of energy for long periods. Taurine Promoted as “the nutritional factor for longevity,” this amino acid is found abundantly in healthy bodies. Taurine increases muscle contractility, which means more powerful workouts as muscle works harder. By cleaning up lactic acid, taurine helps muscles work longer. And it reduces the effect of muscle fatigue, so muscle works more safely. Improving endurance, elevating energy production, and helping the body to metabolize fat, scientists have described taurine as “a wonder molecule.” Green Coffee Bean Extract A big player in the antioxidant game, green coffee bean extract has become the newest supplement in not only keeping the body healthy but also helping to improve metabolism. But while everyone is talking about the success that green coffee bean has achieved for weight loss, did you also know that it can improve reaction time and alertness, and also assist in providing fatigue resistance?

Cayenne Pepper Fruit Extremely high in capsaicin, cayenne pepper triggers the body to quickly send relief to joint and muscle pain. Cayenne is also a great metabolic-booster, aiding the body in burning excess amounts of fats. Cayenne is used to improve circulation and boost the immune system, crucial to an athlete’s recovery. Guarana Seed Extract A popular ingredient used by athletes looking to obtain peak results, this natural stimulant can reduce mental and physical fatigue. Possessing twice as much caffeine as the coffee bean, guarana is released more slowly into the body to provide sustained energy while boosting metabolism. As a catalyst to lactic acid breakdown, this muscle-stress reliever can be an athlete’s best friend! Yerba Mate Leaf Extract Called “the drink of the gods” by South Americans, yerba mate is wellknown for providing an energy boost that’s been described as gentle, clean, calm, and balanced. Many of us have heard of dopamine as vital to our survival, but did you know that this “motivation molecule” is a key ingredient for athletes in enhancing physical performance? By stimulating the production of dopamine, yerba mate strengthens mental clarity and alertness, and provides relief from physical fatigue with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There’s a good reason that in many parts of the world, people wake up to a hot cup of yerba mate to start their day! Vitamin C Everyone’s heard sometime in their life, make sure to take your Vitamin C. Its contribution to the care of the immune system is widely known, but you also need vitamin C to help produce collagen, an important protein used in the growth and repair of tissues. It is a critical supplement in enhancing the health-promoting effects of exercise and reducing exercise-induced damage.

Vitamin B Complex (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) The Vitamin B family plays an important role in keeping our bodies running like well-oiled machines.
