Veera

(29-30 July)

(4th of August)

Storms in Finland 2010 • 4 storms; Asta, Veera, Lahja and Sylvi • 35,000 km of electric power network were damaged.

Lahja

Sylvi

(7-8th August)

(8-9th August)

• 9,000 distribution substations were left without electricity. • Repair work nearly 200,000 hours (over 120 man-years). • Affecting about a third of Finland's electricity network companies • Led to long power cuts. The longest individual power cuts lasted around six weeks.

2

Communication network failures during the 2010 storms: • Asta: 1050pcs GSM and UMTS Base stations, 38pcs TETRA Base stations out of function • Veera: 525pcs of GSM and UMTS Base stations, 25pcs of TETRA Base stations out of function • Lahja and Sylvi:1072pcs of GSM and UMTS Base stations out of function.

3

Substation failure, Nederland, 27.3.2015 • 240000 homes effected • 1 million people effected • Substation backup failed too

Power outage in Europe, November 6, 2006 • 15 million people effected • Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Nederlands, Geramany, France

4

Challenges • How to remote control re-closer stations? • How to control re-routing? • How to monitor the node status in the grid? Public communication networks are down • Loss of power SOLUTION: Radio modems • Run on battery for days

How to swap? • Automated path selection • Route monitoring, standard protocols X

SMART GRID – COMMUNICATION NETWORK Smart Grids and solutions Need of more functions, more intelligence • Increasing amount of information requires high reliability and availability in wireless communication networks • The communication network has to be reliable and safe • The communication networks has to survive extreme weather and environmental conditions

Requiring higher reliability, availability and quality More remote control and measurements

Cost efficiency Remote operations, grid automation, shorter downtimes

Reliability Redundancy • High requirement for availability to primary substations • High requirement for availability to remote control Smart Grid devices
