Dear Readers, I am pleased to share with you that the Water Business Group at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has been successful in strengthening its competitiveness in the global water industry under its vision of growing into one of the “Innovative Global Top in Water Business.” Since winning its first major contract for the Farasan MSF project in 1978, the Water Business Group has successfully delivered a wide spectrum of projects that exhibit Doosan’s technical capabilities in all of the three main types of desalination process: MSF (Multi-Stage Flash), MED (Multi-Effect Distillation), and RO (Reverse Osmosis). To date, Doosan’s desalination plants are producing more than 5 million tons of potable water to meet the daily needs of 17 million people, and the company maintains its position as the global leader in the desalination industry with a market share of 30%. However, to continue to excel in these challenging times brought on by the global recession and stiffer competition, the company will need to further strengthen its competitiveness in its key market such as the Middle East while striving to expand into new territories. To boost the fundamental competitiveness of its existing business, the company is accelerating development of innovative technologies in order to reduce the PLC (Product Lifetime Cost) of thermal desalination plants. Also, by transferring its production base to the world-class manufacturing facility in Vietnam, Doosan Vina, the company has been able to reduce costs, to reinforce its dominance in the thermal desalination market primarily concentrated in the Middle East. Furthermore, the company is continuously advancing its design and purchasing capabilities in order to develop market-leading technologies and secure price competitiveness for its RO business. It is without a doubt that such efforts will further strengthen Doosan’s position in the global desalination market. On the new business front, the Water Business Group is concentrating its efforts to generate stable revenue by expanding service offering to include O&M (Operation & Maintenance) as an EPC provider. With the prospects of the water treatment market looking brighter due to stricter environmental
regulations and rise in demand for water reuse, Doosan is continuously growing its presence, not only in Korea but also in the MENA region and Europe, armed with the expertise of Doosan Enpure, its UK-based water and wastewater treatment engineering company which was acquired in 2012. Also, the company is taking initiatives to secure operating optimization and price competitiveness through big data management in the O&M market for the water treatment sector.

Producing more power with fewer resources while having less environmental impact is the primary goal of the power industry.
Finding innovative ways of enhancing energy efficiency in order to strike a balance between powering progress and achieving sustainable development is the conviction of power companies.

In view of this commitment, the world has been pushing to diversify its energy portfolio, with efforts to expand the portion of nuclear and renewable energies. However, in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, the world is in the stage of re-assessing the safety issues and making concerted efforts to build safer nuclear power plants, while striving to develop renewable technologies that could bring greater returns on investment.
