Lower Keys Relay for Life

Upper Keys Relay for Life

This Saturday is the Relay for Life event in Key West. Our “Jailhouse Rock” team will have a booth and many of members will be walking the track at Horace O’Bryant Middle School to raise money for cancer research. Hope many of you will turn out to support the team. It is a lot of fun – and you can get a little exercise taking a turn around the track. If nothing else, just visit, have a snack at one of the many Relay for Life booths – and help out a good cause. The event is Saturday, April 16th between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. at the back field at the school.

The Upper Keys Relay for Life event is Saturday, April 23rd. Deputy Tony Conde will have a booth. He has named his team “Code 5” and booth will feature a dunk tank and a jail cell where people can obtain arrest warrants for loved ones and have them put in jail. Should be fun and he hopes members of the agency will turn out to support him and his efforts to raise money for this worthy cause. The event will be held at Plantation Key School from Noon until 10 p.m. Fun for the whole family! For more information, contact Deputy Tony Conde at 786-291-6660.

Emergency Communications is busy with events this month By Chris Smith, Emergency Communications Radio Systems Technician The last 2 weekends have been busy for the Emergency Communications department.  The Southernmost Air Spectacular was on April 2 and 3.  Our Emergency Communications and the NAS ELMR were able to successfully connect our radio system to the Navy’s base system for both security operations and for fire/rescue operations.  On Saturday our dispatch center received multiple calls about a piece of a Blue Angles aircraft that had fallen onto the flight-line.  Because of the radio interoperability that had been Hostile invaders managed to fly this flag from the set-up our dispatcher was able to report this dicommunications tower in Key West. The crew at rectly to the Navy security personnel on scene.  No Emergency Communications managed to “capture one was hurt and the part was recovered almost it” from its pirated location. immediately.   According to the Navy, this was the first time an event like this was able to link 2 different radio systems together to achieve true interoperability between Navy security and local law enforcement.  The small Mobile Command Post didn’t get much rest though.  The following Saturday was the 35th 7 Mile Bridge Run.  Our Command Post was used as the hub between MCSO, the amateur radio volunteers who covered the bridge,

The smaller mobile command post on the Navy base where it helped with communications at the recent air show.

Fire rescue, and race officials.  Chris Smith, Radio Systems Technician, worked as the go-between to handle the radio traffic.  Due to the truly wonderful cool weather there were only 2 calls for service that were reported near the end of the race. The smaller mobile command post also made an appearance at the Seven Mile Bridge run where it was utilized for communications between the various entities involved in the run.
