The Role of The Salvation Army in Emergencies Basic character and tradition: The Salvation Army is a denomination of the Christian Church, with a strong social conscience, seeking to alleviate distress wherever it is found and is able to fulfil a crucial role during and after a major emergency. Please refer to: - London Voluntary Sector Capabilities Document.

Resources available: The Salvation Army has resources of property, which can be utilised as a place of safety for those who have been evacuated from their homes, trained personnel to provide immediate and on-going support and a fleet of purpose built mobile canteen units which are equipped in order to be selfsufficient at the incident site. These mobile units, which are based across the UK, are mobilised on a regular basis to provide both practical and emotional support to emergency services personnel. Potentially The Salvation Army can respond to emergencies in the following ways:

Personnel Officers and emergency service volunteers are subject to Criminal Records Bureau checks.

 Salvation Army Officers are ordained ministers of religion, trained in pastoral care and support. o

Trained Officers can provide support to family members and friends at an Emergency Mortuary Viewing Area and act as the conduit for relevant multi-faith support

 Volunteers also have a range of practical and listening skills, which can be utilised in times of major incidents. o

Providing support to individuals at any designated Rest Centre or Humanitarian Assistance Centre.

o

Providing personnel to assist at any Support Helpline set up following an emergency

Premises Details of Salvation Army premises in the South West London Local Resilience Forum area, which have the potential of being used as rest/reception centres, are listed within this Plan
