1.0 Pool Dimensions & Structure    

 Pool length is 9.10 M Pool width is 4.50m The pool has a gradual slope from 0.73 m (Shallow end) to 1.07m (Deep end). One dropped level pool (Tank) with retaining wall and handrails. Access to the pool appears from the changing rooms at the shallow end.

1.2 Poolside Security & Safety No one is authorised to access the pool area unless they have been granted permission by the school. When the swimming pool is not in use the pool door will be locked and the pool covered.

1.3 Incident Procedures A key role of poolside staff and spotters is to remove or substantially reduce incidents. Prevention is the prime objective, but when incidents do occur it is important that staff know how to respond.

1.3.1 Action for Swimmer in Difficulty Lifeguard: This action must be carried out immediately. It has been observed that a swimmer is in difficulty, whether the lifeguard is required to enter the pool or not.  Alert staff verbally of an incident occurring as set out in the N.O.P. This warns staff immediately that there is a problem and you may need assistance  Ensure that the emergency button is activated by spotter and that they call for assistance.  Carry out the rescue procedures as per training, move the casualty to the side of the pool as quickly and as safely as possible.  Carry out First Aid procedures until the medical team or first aider arrives and assess whether emergency services is required.  If an ambulance is required ensure that it has been requested.  As soon as incident is over, complete appropriate report forms and take to senior management immediately Support Staff: This procedure should be carried out immediately after the alarm has been raised.  Assess the situation. If the lifeguard in the water requires immediate assistance, this takes priority.  Clear the pool or bring bathers to the side of the pool depending on severity of the incident.  While the pool is being cleared, assess whether or not an ambulance is required and designate someone to call emergency services.  Assist in lifting the casualty from the pool and in giving first aid as per training, assess again if an ambulance is required and summon as above. If not required, give further assistance, and then continue to help supervise other students on the poolside until the incident is over.  Ensure the safety and wellbeing of other bathers.  As soon as incident is over, complete appropriate report forms and take to senior management immediately

1.3.2 Action For Lighting Failure The following action is to be taken by all staff:  Clear the pool immediately, instructing swimmers to leave the poolside.  Allow 5 minutes for power to return  Ensure swimmers are wrapped up during this time  After 5 minutes cancel swimming and instruct swimmers to get changed.  Instruct all spectators’ to leave through the normal exists.  Remain in the changing areas until all students/staff are out.  Ensure that staff conduct a head count  Call for site manager/senior management.

1.3.3 Action for Serious Injury in the Pool Lifeguard:  Verbally inform staff of incident.  Ensure that the emergency button is activated by spotter and that they call for assistance.  Assess the situation as per your training..  Get casualty to the side as soon as possible and administer appropriate treatment and first aid.  Continue with first aid until school nurse/first aider or emergency services arrive.  When incident is over, it is the responsibility of the swimming teacher to write a report of the incident and forward onto senior management. 1.3.4 Action for Drowning Lifeguard:  On discovering the casualty Verbally inform staff of incident.  Ensure that the emergency button is activated by spotter and that they call for assistance.  Emergency services should be contacted immediately.  Get casualty to the side as soon as possible and administer appropriate treatment and first aid.  Continue with first aid until school nurse/first aider or emergency services arrive.

When incident is over, it is the responsibility of the swimming teacher to write a report of the incident and forward onto senior management.

Support Staff:  On hearing the verbal warning clear the pool immediately.  Follow school procedure for an emergency  Assess the situation and call for any emergency services if required. (Call 202/213/226) in the event that there is no answer on these lines dial 9 999. If you contact the emergency services direct you MUST still make reception aware of the situation).  Assist with any first aid that is needed as per your training.  Remove other students away from the incident and into changing rooms if safe to do so.  Ensure the safety and wellbeing of other bathers.  Ensure that no one goes into the pool whilst the incident is in progress.  When the incident is dealt with, a report should be made by the swimming teacher and forwarded onto senior management.

1.3.5 Action For Seizure Follow Procedure for serious injury and;  Medication may need to be given by trained staff.  Seizure details to be recorded and referred to (School nurse, Ext: 205)

1.3.6 Acton for Spinal Injury Follow procedure for serious injury and;  Stabilise the casualty  If safe to do so remove the casualty from the water  First aid trained personal or NRASTC assist in the first aid of the casualty.

1.3.7 Action For Dry side Accident/Incident Follow procedure for serious injury

1.3.8 Action for Fatality      

Arrange for the emergency services to be summoned by the receptionist. Cordon off area and maintain vigilance over the body. Comfort any friends/relatives. Under no circumstances should items belonging to the deceased be removed. Contact senior management at first opportunity. Remember, people react in different ways. Be prepared for unexpected reactions from friends/relatives and staff involved. Complete full accident report form and major incident report pack.

1.4 Action for Fire or Total Evacuation ALL STAFF should be familiar with all means of escape from the building and the appropriate procedures. The fire alarm will be activated for any emergency except for a pool incident. If the fire alarm sounds evacuation must take place.

1.4.1 Exits and Assembly Points Exit 1- Via the changing rooms and along the corridor- Assemble at main car park. Exit 2 - Via Poolside and through Tain Cottage – Assemble at top car park (ensure that someone informs school staff on main carpark)

1.4.2 Emergency Grab Box for Evacuation The emergency Grab Box (Black) containing foil blankets, medication, a first aid kit and a COSHH grab pack can be found on poolside during each session. This must be taken out on evacuation by a member of staff in the pool area.

1.4.3 On Hearing The Alarm  On hearing the fire alarm clear the pool of all swimmers.  Collect the emergency Grab Box and evacuate the building through the designated emergency exits.  The Spotter will be last to leave ensuring that everyone has been evacuated from the pool area.  Assemble at the designated point.  Carry out a head count and report to the relevant staff.  Prevent anyone entering the building until it is deemed safe to do so by SLT

1.4.4 In The Event of Toxic Gas Release       

Upon discovering a release of toxic gas, clear the pool and evacuate the building via the changing rooms if possible IMMEDIATELY. Activate fire alarm. Do not stop to pick up belongings, just leave. Ensure everyone is out of the pool and escort students to the assembly point The spotter must ensure that the changing rooms and pool is empty before leaving. Inform management. Prevent anyone entering the building until it is deemed safe to do so by SLT

1.4.5 Bomb Threat When a Bomb Threat is received;  Evaluate the details gathered.  Accompanied by a second member of staff if possible and without taking any personal risk, go to the area indicated by the caller and look to see if there are any suspicious packages.  If there are no packages at all in the area then this will be taken as a false alarm.

If there are any packages or bags then treat them as a live device Follow procedure for toxic gas leak

1.5 Emergency Water Treatment Procedures If there are any concerns about swimming pool water quality swimming should NOT take place. Anna/Danny will inform you of procedure.

1.5.1 Lack of Water Clarity   

When informed of lack of water quality, immediately inspect the water and instruct the pool to be cleared if necessary. Investigate the cause of the problem. On deciding how long rectification will take inform Senior Leadership.

1.5.2 Faecal Contamination Diarrhoea / Vomit In all cases where it is apparent that diarrhoea has entered the pool, the following action must be taken:  The pool must be cleared of swimmers immediately.  Inform the Swimming Teacher/Pool Plant Operative/Reception (EXT: 213/202/226)  Showering of each individual must take place.  The pool must be kept at free chlorine levels at the top of recommended operating limits. The relevant flocculent should be added  During the pool closure disinfection of surrounding areas and changing facilities must take place to avoid any cross contamination.  The pool is to be closed until the following day. The pool door should be lock and “pool closed” signs displayed.  A backwash must be completed the next morning. Chlorine levels need to be reduced to normal operating levels. Before allowing anyone to swim.

1.5.3 Solid Stools     

Inform the Swimming Teacher/Pool Plant Operative/Reception (EXT: 213/202/226) Section off the area. Remove the soiling and dispose of via nearest toilet waste, the standard disinfection process should be able to cope with any bacterial infection in the pool. Ensure that the chlorine residuals are at the highest recommended level. Continue bathing

1.5.4 Major Blood Spillage     

Close and evacuate the pool Inform the Swimming Teacher/Pool Plant Operative/Reception (EXT: 213/202/226) Wear protective clothing (apron, gloves) to clear spillage Dispose of any waste in yellow bags and place in clinical waste bin Disinfect the area

If the spillage has occurred in the pool follow the steps above for Faecal Contamination Diarrhoea / Vomit

If the water is cloudy or has a milky appearance then the pool is to be closed and not opened until tests have taken place and the situation has been rectified.

1.6 Structural Failure If there is any sign of structural failure whilst the pool is in use, close immediately and follow procedure of emergency evacuation, also alerting management straight away.

1.6.1 Window Breakages If there is a window that is broken or cracked, clear area of students and staff immediately and close pool until all glass has been cleared and the window has been mended.

1.7 Chemical Spillages and Fires All chemicals are risk assessed and COSHH assessed to ensure that the risk of chemical leaks or fires is reduced. In the event of a leak or fire the following actions should be taken

1.7.1 For Small Scale Spillages   

Ensure that the correct personal protective equipment is worn Soak up any spillage up with the spill kit / Absorbent granules located in chemical shed “A” or collect any contaminant if solid. Seek advice authority from the COSHH data sheet on how to correctly dispose of the material. COSHH sheets are located near to the chemical and in the changing room cupboard (to the left before entry to the pool)

1.7.2 For Large Scale spillages     

If possible and safe to do so, stop the source of the spill as soon as possible and prevent contamination of watercourse. Activate the fire alarm and call the fire brigade; Try to control spills and leaks (when it is safe to do so); Evacuate the site, and if necessary nearby premises. Inform the National Environment Agency

1.7.3 Fire Fighting Follow procedures for large scale spills.  Ensure that you have the pool chemical grab pack for the fire service. (located in the pool emergency box)

1.8 Pool Circulation Emergency  

Evacuate the pool Press the isolator switch on poolside by the fire exit to shut off the pool pump 9

1.9 Over Crowding and Unacceptable Behaviour Procedures 1.9.1 Overcrowding If the swimming pool becomes overcrowded take immediate action to reduce the numbers the recommended level.

1.9.2 Disorderly Behaviour (Inc. Indecent Behaviour)     

Ask the person to refrain from such behaviour and explain politely but firmly that it is not acceptable on the premises. If person persists, ask them to leave the pool / area. If no response, call the Senior Leadership and await instructions. Ensure as far as possible the safety of other customers. Make note of incident, time and description of offenders.
