Children will learn about the importance of water safety, what to do in an emergency and learn about the dangers of the sun, sea and sand. • Talk about how children can stay safe around the water, at the swimming pool and on the beach. • Ask the children if they know why physical activity, such as swimming, is good for your well-being. • Children could explore basic emergency aid procedures and learn what to do in order to get help in an emergency. • Discuss with the children the dangers of the sun, sea and sand. The activities below will help children to learn about importance of water safety and what to do in an emergency.
• Children could design a water safety poster using shells and other natural objects. • Ask the children to find out about the different flags used at the beach as well as they different warning signs used at the swimming pool. Red warns that the water is unsafe, red and yellow means it is safe to swim and black and white flags indicate an area for boats and surfers, but not an area for swimmers. • Children could write a persuasive letter to their headteacher telling them why they should be allowed to go on a school trip to the seaside. They could include their knowledge of water safety at the seaside. • Children could present their findings about water safety and the sea rescue service in a school assembly or to children in a different class to spread the word about the importance of staying safe near the water!
