A.L.R. (RAILE, Arthur Lyon, pseudonym of Edward Perry Warren). A Tale of Pausanian Love. London: Cayme Press (1927). Edward Perry Warren (1868-1928) was a wealthy American anglophile who was educated at Oxford and subsequently settled near Lewes with his longtime “soul mate” John Marshall along with what became the “Lewes Brotherhood” of aesthetes. He published several volumes of Uranian prose and poetry under the pseudonym Arthur Lyon Raile and was a major proponent of Hellenic paederastic philosophies.This, his rarest volume, is a Uranian novel set in Oxford and incorporates his philosophy of Socratic love, referencing John Addington Symonds, Pater and others. Printed at the Cayme Press by Henry Scott Tuke’s nephew, Philip Sainsbury. Quite rare with only one institutional copy at the British Library. A very good copy in red fabric boards, spine lightly sunned, light discolorations on covers, occasional light spotting, several pages roughly opened with small tears and one chip, with the corresponding loss on the following page and easily restorable. (ALCIBIADE). Dissertation sur l’Ouvrage Intitule L’Alcibiade Fanciullo a Scola. Paris: Jules Gay (1861). 78pp.The first appearance in French of this disquisition on the authorship and history of infamous pederastic treatise, Alcibiade fanciullo a scola. The publisher, Jules Gay, issued the rare text in Italian and in French several years later and was condemned for the book in 1868.The present edition was translated by M. Gustav Brunet, who has added a “postface” and notes containing a vast amount of material on the subject.of pederasty and sodomy. Ashbee (Index) 29. Not listed in Pia. One of 254 numbered copies. Uncommon. A lovely copy in 1/4 morocco and marbled boards and endpapers, with heraldic bookplate on front pastedown. $850.

ALERA, Don Brennus. The Underground Haunt: The Adventures of two Flagellants from the private diary of the Baron de M**** a flagellant of note. Sceaux: Select Bibliothèque (1912). The first (and only) translation of Le Repaire Souterrain: Aventures de deux flagellants d’après le journal intime du baron de M***, flagellant de marque.The final pages include a listing of all the other Select publications, with a cautionary note that other pirated editions are “entirely without value and devoid of all interest.” A very good example of a rare book, original wrappers present, several line illustrations, bound in a 1/4 morocco binding with gilt decorations, raised bands, marbled endpapers. $300.

ALIBERT, François-Paul. La Prairie aux Narcisses. Marseilles: Les Cahiers du Sud (1927).Very good example of these gay poems, with a homoerotic frontispiece by Manolo. One of 21 special numbered and initialed copies on Hollande (after 11 on Madagascar). A near fine copy in wrappers. $150.

ALIBERT, François-Paul. Marsyas ou la Justice d’Apollon. Carcassone: Pierre Polère (1922).An early work by this gay writer much admired by André Gide. One of six special copies (VIII) printed on Japon impérial (after two on Whatman). Laid into the book is an original 1p. TLS from the author regarding the circumstances of publication of the book, several letters from the publisher of the book regarding this and other books by Alibert, as well as a prospectus for the book.Very good in original orange wrappers. $325.

BARNEY, Natalie Clifford. Nouvelles Pensées de l’Amazone. Paris: Mercure de France (1939). Poems and assorted writings by the American lesbian who maintained a Parisian literary salon.Very good in original wrappers. $25.

[BARNEY, Natalie Clifford]. Je me souviens.... Paris: Sansot [1910]. An intensely personal prose poem written by Barney to her onetime lover Renée Vivien created for the sole purpose of wooing her away from Baroness Hélène Zuylen de Nyevelt in 1904. The original copy was presented to Vivien and did achieve its goal, albeit briefly, and the two reconciled and traveled together to the island of Lesbos.They lived together for a short time and talked about starting a school of poetry for women like the one which Sappho, according to tradition, had founded on Lesbos some 2,500 years before.The reconciliation was short lived, however, and Vivien returned to the Baroness before a steep decline in her emotional life lead to her early death in 1910. Barney published this book anonymously after Vivien’s death as a tribute to the love that the two shared.A near fine copy in original wrappers, housed in a custom clamshell box. Quite uncommon $1000.

BEISTEGUI, Carlos de. Collection of Monnaies & Médailles d’Alsace formée par Henri Meyer. Paris: Rollin et Feuardent (1902). 8vo. 32 plates. A quite rare catalog of coins and medals donated by Carlos de Beistegui to the Bibliothéque Nationale. Beistegui assembled another collection later in life, also donated to the French state. Very good, but covers browned and spotted, stamps of the Encyclopédie Bénedictine throughout. Inscribed by Beistegui on front endpaper. Rare. $275.

Milan and Paris (1964). The sale of the contents of the famed Palazzo Labia in Venice, home to the aesthete’s famous masked balls. Over 700 lots listed, with text in Italian and French. Very good in illustrated wrappers. Uncommon. $225.

BERANGER P.- J. Les Chansons Erotiques. NP: Aux dépens d’un amateur (1923). 163pp. Béranger’s erotic poetry is presented with 16 quite explicit hand-colored engravings, several of which are explicitly homoerotic. One of 250 numbered copies on vélin blanc de Montgolfier. Although not mentioned, the artist is Virot. An uncommon and outstanding book of erotic imagery. Very good in original wrappers, light wear to head and tail of spine. Pia 202. Dutel 1193. $850.

BERNOUARD, Francis [François]. Des Roses sous la bruine. Paris: Arthème Fayard (1905). The first book published by Bernouard (1884-1948), who went on to become an accomplished publisher, author and typographer. He began his publishing career in 1909 and was an early friend of Cocteau’s with whom (along with Paul Iribe), they collaborated on the magazine “Le Mot.” They maintained a lifelong friendship and Bernouard published several of Cocteau’s most innovative works.This copy has an original portrait of the author tipped onto endpaper and also bears a long dedication poem to Eugene de Briquerelle. Rare, original wrappers present, bound in 1/2 marbled boards and endpapers, leather spine with decorative dentelles, light wear to edges. $650.

BEY, Fazyl (Edmond Fazy). Le Livre des Beaux–Traduit du Turc par un Pacha à Trois Queues. Paris: Bibliothèque Internationale d’Édition (1909).An uncommon collection of 43 short essays and poetry about young men from around the world. Variously attributed to Gide, Pierre Loti and several others.Very good in original wrappers, bound in an attractive 1/4 morocco binding. Pia 435. $450.

BLAKESTON, Oswell. How to Make your own Confetti. London: Trigram Press (1965). A collection of unabashedly gay poems, printed on various colored papers and illustrated by Max Chapman. One of 50 special numbered copies, signed by both the author and artist.Very good in very good illustrated jacket with only light edgewear. Uncommon. $125.

BOARDMAN, Ruby. Mimi of Mogador: Text and Drawings. Paris: Privately Printed (1936). sm. 4to., 32pp, 3 plates. A curious collection of lesbian poems and prose, along with three portraits by an American expatriate who lived in Paris in the inter-War years. One of 500 numbered copies, although considerably scarcer than this would imply. A very good copy in wrappers. Uncommon. $200.

BOSC, Jean. Les Isolés: Moeurs Maritimes [Le Vice Marin: Confessions d’un Matelot]. Paris: Pierre Douville (1905). An edition of this gay novel which appeared under a different title because of a scandal created by the original edition. Bosc notes in an “avis au public” tipped onto the front endpaper that hypocritical reviewers and distributors refused to announce the book as originally issued because of concerns about its scandalous content.The book went through a number of editions, all of which are quite uncommon. This copy refers to an “11é mille” issue. Original wrappers, a bit browned and edgewear, spine a bit fatigued. $175.

Paris: Les Bibliophiles Fantaisistes (1912). lg. 4to. 110pp. Memoirs of Cambridge life, society life in London and Paris, “fumeurs d’opium,” etc. Boulestin contributed to Fersen’s short-lived journal “Akademos” with similar material. Very good in wrappers, some staining to endpapers. $110.

BROOKS, Cecil. The Musicians and other Sketches. London: Privately Printed (1901). 107pp. An uncommon collection of stories by this young musician who died young while traveling in Italy, introduced with a touching memoir by Charles Kains Jackson. Brooks was an acquaintance of Henry Scott Tuke as well as Kains Jackson and may have been part of the Uranian group of poets, although little remains of his writings save the material collected here.Very good in green buckram boards, spine label a bit worn and several stray marks to the covers, browning to endsheets. $325.

BROWN, Richard Blake. Youth’s Comradeship- Being the Unpublished letters of a public school boy. . An original 167 page typed manuscript of a novel written by Brown while an undergraduate at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1922, told through a series of letters (to “Julian”) and a play. The novel concerns a public school boy and his “particular friendships” and the assorted intrigues related thereto. The novel was never published, but is bound in blue boards with a leather spine label, and bears the author’s signature, a signed and dated photographic portrait is tipped onto the front pastedown, and there is a notation that the work was written in July-August of 1922. Laid into the book is a 2 pp ALS from Martin Secker to said “Julian” regarding the estate of Richard Blake Brown. Brown was an eccentric Anglican clergyman who wrote a number of Firbankian novels and was a member of the gay subculture in London. $750.

A quite uncommon illustrated work by the prolific writer on sexual matters.We find no institutional holdings.Very good in original illustrated wrappers, small chip to front wrapper, bound in rather worn 1/2 marbled boards, spine sunned. $150.

COCTEAU, Jean. Jean Cocteau: Portraits d’amis et autoportraits. Paris: Mentha (1991). 4to. A lovely edition of eighty line portraits by Cocteau of Louise de Vilmorin, Jean Marais, Colette, Boni de Castellane, Josephine Baker, Radiguet, Proust, Marie Laure de Noailles and many others.Very good in stiff wrappers. $65.

CAUFEYNON, Dr. [Jean Fauconney]. Scènes d’Amour Morbide. Paris: Paul Fort (ND). A quite uncommon novel about lesbianism and homosexuality by the author of numerous works in the field.Very good in wrappers, photographic frontispiece and illustrations throughout.This appears to be the first edition, pre-dating the Librairie Artistique edition, also quite uncommon. No institutional copies found. $150.

CHARLES-ETIENNE. Les Épices Libertines. Paris: Éditions Curio (1926). 253pp. A collection of erotic essays by the prolific novelist. A very good copy in original wrappers, one of 25 copies on large paper of the édition de tête, inscribed by the author to his compatriot Albert Nortal in the year of publication. $175.

COCTEAU, Jean. Le Mystère de Jean l’Oiseleur. [Paris: Edouard Champion (1925)]. 4to. Perhaps Cocteau’s greatest illustrated book, consisting of thirty-one self-portraits, created while he was undergoing a disintoxication program for his addiction to opium.The drawings were produced as he stared relentlessly into a mirror for hours on end, attempting to come to terms with his chronic addiction and still mourning the loss of his beloved Raymond Radiguet. Many of the images also include text, some of it written backwards, creating a surrealistic effect. Limited to 130 copies (and 10 on Japon), the sheets are laid into illustrated wrappers, with a decorative cardboard loose cover, as issued.This copy is initialed by Cocteau on the colophon page. A beautiful copy of a superlative work of personal insight, created during the most creative period of Cocteau’s life. $3200.

CHUBB, Ralph. The Heavenly Cupid, or The True Paradise of Loves. Fair Oak: Published by the Author (1934). 188pp. (15” x 11”). Very good in corduroy boards, green morocco spine and tips, light wear. Number 5 of 43 copies, this example is one of seven copies of the special colored copies with frontispiece and title in color. Reid A10b. Originally entitled “The Book of Loves” this is perhaps the most overtly pederastic of all of his books with numerous drawings of nude boys. According to Reid’s biography of Chubb, a number of Chubb’s own experiences with boys have been integrated into the prophesies expounded upon in the book. Having recently suffered a backlash for his activities in the local community, Chubb includes the following proviso in the text: “In the matter of sex honesty I have dealt more tenderly with current prejudices and superstitious ignorances than I should naturally choose to do.” Ninety-six illustrations in all.The colored image of the boy on the frontispiece is signed and dated by Chubb. $12,500.

COCTEAU, Jean. Le portrait surnaturel de Dorian Gray: pièce Fantastique en 4 actes et 5 tableaux tirée du “Portrait de Dorian Gray,” roman d’Oscar Wilde. NP: ND. The original carbon typescript of this dramatic interpretation of Wilde’s classic by Cocteau. The play was never published or produced during Cocteau’s lifetime and was only published in 1978.This seventy-one page typescript is from the collection of Jean Marais (purchased at the recent sale of his collections) and is undoubtedly an early state of the play. Unbound sheets, very good. $325.

COCTEAU, Jean. Les Parents Terribles. Paris: Le Monde Illustré (11 December 1948) #37, 30pp. The dramatic adaptation of Cocteau’s famous novel which starred his lover Jean Marais. The cover of this issue of “Le Monde Illustré: Théatrical & Littéraire” bears an original drawing by Cocteau dedicated to Marais, using his pet name “Jeannot.” Very good, covers a bit rubbed, light crease, small chip on rear cover. From the collection of Jean Marais. $450.

COCTEAU, Jean. Maison de Santé. Paris: Éditions Briant-Robert (1926). 4to. One of Cocteau’s more interesting books, consisting of thirty-one line drawings composed while he was undergoing de-toxification for his longtime addiction to opium.The drawings are often surreal images depicting himself, sailors and dream images that are among his best work. Despite the limitation of 500 copies, the book is quite uncommon. One of an edition of 180 numbered copies on Arches, signed by the author on the colophon, as well as the front cover (not called for). A very good copy in contemporary 1/4 purple leather (lightly sunned in spots) and marbled boards and endpapers, original wrappers present. $850.

One of the earliest books of which we are aware relating to the Third Republic’s obsession with morals, particular concerning sexuality.The author surveys all forms of vice, including pédérastie, prostitution, sapphism, houses of prostitution, etc Bound in 1/4 morocco and marbled boards, light edgewear, original wrappers not present. Printed by Philip Sainsbury, Henry Scott Tuke’s nephew. One 450 copies issued.Very good in sewn wrappers that have modest edgewear and browning. $175.

CONGER, Richard, et al. ONE Magazine. Los Angeles (1972). 4to. The final four issues of the long-running gay magazine, which appeared in a larger format after the demise of the journal in 1965. Contributions by Jim Kepner, Dorr Legg, among others, as well as photographs and artwork.Very good in illustrated stapled wrappers. $85.

A memoir of sorts, with assorted reflections on life with an extensive discussion of gay personalities and literature, sympathetically referencing Gide, Renée Vivien, François Porché, Ulrichs and many others. Quite rare.Very good in original wrappers, a bit browned and spotted. $250.

COULANGHEON, J.-A. L’Inversion Sentimentale–La sagesse pathètique. Paris: Mercure de France (1901). An uncommon book by this respected writer, who died before he reached thirty. CUNARD, Nancy. Thoughts about Ronald Firbank. New York: Albondocani (1971). An amusing portrait of Firbank, with an Introduction by Mirian Benkovitz. One of 126 numbered copies, printed letterpress on mustard colored Fabriano paper and hand-sewn in wrappers. A fine example. $85. CURIOSA. Étrennes aux fouteurs ou calendrier des trois sexes. A Sodome et a Cythere: Et se trouvent plus qu’ailleurs, dans la poche de ceux qui le condamnent [ND]. A later reprint of this uncommon erotic work, originally published in 1790. Not referenced in any of the standard bibliographic texts, the text also contains a violent diatribe against Marie-Antoinette and the French court. This edition appears to date from the late 19th century. Good in rather marked and stained later fabric boards, internally very good with occasional light browning. $85. D’ARSCHOT, Philippe. La Nuit sur Mytilene. Paris: Éditions Jean Crès (1935). An uncommon lesbian novel, with an introduction by Mario Meunier. Inscribed by the author on front endpaper, part of which has been excised.Very good in wrappers, small hole on rear cover. $85. DAVEY, Norman. Desiderium-MCMXV-MCMXVII. Cambridge: Heffer & Sons (1920). The author's first book of poetry, much of which is homoerotic in tone. Very good in boards, bookplate on front endpaper, small label chip.Young 906. Uncommon. $100.

DELLUC, Louis. Chez de Max. Paris: L’Édition (1918). 284pp. Memoirs of the famous French tragedien, who befriended Cocteau at a young age and helped to launch his career as a poet. Illustrated throughout with 24 drawings of Jean Lorrain, Robert de Montesquiou, Henri Bernstein, Sacha Guitry, Sarah Bernhardt, Edmond Rostand and others by Cappiello, de Losques, Lucien Laforge, etc. One of only thirty numbered copies on Japon (after 12 on Chine), this copy is also adorned with a warm inscription from the author on a title page from another addition which is tipped onto endpaper. A very nice copy in original decorated wrappers. $425.

Heretobefore these relationships have been shrouded in mystery and the letters contribute substantially to the understanding of Douglas and his life and work. Introduction by Michael Allan. DUPLAY, Maurice. Adonis Bar. Paris: Albin Michel (1928). An uncommon gay novel set in a Montmartre gay bar which accurately reflects the decadence of the 1920s through the eyes of the bar’s owner Horace and his much younger lover. Very good in marbled boards, original wrappers not present. $85.

EROTICA. Catalogue de Photographies Galantes: Stéréos—Gravuresé—Livres Erotiques. NP:ND (ca. 1907). 16pp. A quite rare catalogue of erotic books, photographs and “articles spéciaux” with more than 200 items listed, including many quite rare books on homosexuality. The catalogue bears no name or address, but was most likely the collaboration of Alphonse Gallais, Paul Fort and perhaps others active in this field in the early 20th century.The photographs listed include every conceivable pairing “”Modern’ pederast;” “MinonMinette folies amoureusese;” “orgies Montmartoises,” etc.), with descriptions of each set. Very good in original wrappers. $400.

A collection of poems, may with veiled homoerotic themes, including “Love That Never Told Can Be,” “A Song of Friends,” etc. Very good in green cloth boards, a printed photographic portrait of the author has been tipped onto endpaper. Signed and dated by the author on title page. $85.

ESSAC, Jean d’. Lettres Riomoises. Rêves et souvenirs. Chamalières: Chez l’auteur (1944). Romantic adventures from the author of Billy: Idylles d’amour Grec en Angleterre, illustrated throughout by Essac with numerous tipped-in drawings and vignettes. One of only 132 numbered copies issued. Near fine in wrappers, light edgewear. Rare. $375.

FELLOWES, Daisy. Cats in the Isle of Man. London: William Heinemann (1929). One of several novels written by the fashion icon and editor of Harper’s Bazaar magazine. Fellowes was an heiress of the Singer sewing machine fortune and largely raised by her aunt,Winnaretta (Princess Edmond de Polignac).This is one of 25 special copies printed for presentation and bears the name of her aunt and is signed by Fellowes on the justification page. A very good copy in black beveled boards, top edge gilt, deckled edges. $375.

52. FERSEN (Jacques d’Adelswärd). Et le Feu s’éteignit sur la Mer..... Paris: Leon Vanier [1909]. Fersen’s novel about Capri that caused great consternation among the denizens of the island and prompted legal action which prevented his return to the island for some time. Many of the characters in the novel were thinly veiled portrayals of local residents, most of whom took unkindly to their portrayals. A lovely copy in original decorative lightly browned wrappers. One of Fersen’s more uncommon books. $750.

FERSEN, [Jacques d’Adelswärd]. Messes Noires—Lord Lyllian. Paris: Vanier (1905). 2nd ed. Fersen’s semi-autobiographical novel about the decadent Lord Lyllian,” a breathtaking mixture of truth and fiction” according to the scholar Will Ogrinc. Fersen includes among his cast of characters not only Oscar Wilde and Alfred Douglas, but Friedrich Krupp, Péladan, Robert de Montesquiou, Jean Lorrain and many others. The author’s legal battles with his own “messes noires” happened several years before this novel was published and Fersen had retreated to Capri. A very good copy in the very appealing wrappers designed by Claude Simpson, modest browning to covers. The mention of a “deuxieme edition” on title page may be fictive. An English translation of the novel, issued by Elysium Press, was published in 2005. $825.

Donald Friend (1915-1989) was one of the most important Australian artists of his generation, known particularly for his studies of young men and boys. Robert Hughes, writing in the mid-1960s, described him as “one of the two finest draughtsmen of the nude in Australia,” and noted his humanism and lack of sentimentality. He spent much of his life in the Far East and settled for many years in Bali. This edition, a precursor to his epic work, Bumbooziana, includes a quantity of witty and highly original portrayals of various methods of coitus. The second edition of Gide’s classic text on homosexuality, issued in a very small edition of only 21 copies printed on Chandelle papers, none for which were for sale.This influential work has remained in print since its original publication and remains one of the cornerstones of modern gay studies and was considered by the author to be his most important work. Originally appearing anonymously and with the title abbreviated simply as “CRDN” in an edition of 12 copies in 1911, both editions are among the rarest works on human sexuality. This edition was enlarged by Gide from two Dialogues in the original edition to Four Socratic Dialogues and a Preface, and appeared with the entire title, but without the author’s name, which only appeared in the first trade edition published several years later. A beautiful copy in a full crimson morocco binding with gilt ruling on covers and spine, signed by Semet and Plumelle, with gold titling, edges gilt, silk endpapers and a morocco and marbled paper chemise, slipcased, original wrappers present. This copy is numbered 20 and bears the ex libris on front endpaper of Sabatier (and another). Quite rare- we sold the Peyrefitte copy of the first edition some years ago, but this is the first example of this edition we have encountered. Only two OCLC copies located. $8500.

HEGEDUS, Adam de. Hegedus (1906-1958) was a Hungarian born, naturalized British citizen who wrote a number of works of fiction, essays and an autobiography as well as a pseudonymous gay novel (The Heart in Exile by Rodney Garland). Included here is a group of three manuscript diaries, covering the period 4 June 1932 to 14 July 1948, a total of approximately 350 leaves, the first two volumes being largely concerned with his time in London, plus occasional trips to Venice, Nice, Paris (where he befriended André Gide), and Hungary, the third volume (7 May 1946 to 14 July 1948) recounting his time in New York, plus occasional visits away including Chicago and California, a short section in Hungarian, but mostly in English, a few typed letters and other ephemera pasted in or loosely inserted, the text written in an uninhibited style giving details of writing projects and plans including newspaper articles and books, friends, parties, and other social engagements. He recounts meetings with Somerset Maugham, William Plomer, Louis Golding, Harold Nicholson, the Duchesss of Sermonetta, and many others, including assorted aristocrats and politicians.There is considerable attention paid to his attempts to have books and articles published, as well as political issues related to the war and its aftermath. Many references to his assorted girlfriends and extensive descriptions as well of cruising for sailors and other male companions. Very good in contemporary limp and canvas backed boards, some soiling and wear. $950. HENRY-MARX. Ryls: Un Amour hors la Loi. Paris: Ollendorf (1923). One of the most important pre-War gay novels written in France.The novel has strong revolutionary elements of anarchism, and captures the spirit of the age, including vivid descriptions of the drag balls of Paris. The protagonist, an academic, falls in love with his friend Didier, but the relationship is complicated by Didier’s sister Hélène, who also loves Ryls. All of the works have explicitly homosexual themes and were published towards the end of his life when he became more open about his homosexual inclinations, but nonetheless insisted on such works being published without his name. Included are the following, a complete set of the “Museé Secret” collection, each of which is hand -numbered “III” from an edition of only four of the édition de tête, the total edition being limited to only 47 copies. All are beautifully printed on Japon and bear various cover illustrations by an unknown hand. We find no institutional holdings for any of the books. Paris: Goupil (1913). 247pp. Montesquiou’s lavish hommage to the Comtesse de Castiglione, with whom he maintained a lifelong fascination. Castiglione, the flamboyant Italian courtesan who was mistress to Emperor Napoleon III of France, was the most photographed woman of her age and the subject of much controversy for her role as an agent in several court intrigues. It is reported that she only appeared at night in her declining years, spending her days inside her Place Vendôme apartment, from which all mirrors were banned. Leipzig: Matthes (1864). 72pp.The second of Ulrich’s important and pioneering pamphlets on homosexuality, “Inclusa” presents his scientific theory of homoerotic desire in which he argues that “urnings” (the term he coined to describe homosexuals), are attracted to other men because they are hermaphrodites of the mind. Even though they have male bodies, their souls are female so they are naturally drawn to male sexual partners. He argued furthermore that the punitive laws of the German state against homosexuals were thus unjust. This pamphlet and its predecessor “Vindex” were confiscated by the authorities and censored throughout Prussia. An important gay rights document and one of the cornerstones of modern gay studies. The Baroness Hélène de Zuylen de Nyevelt, a member of the Rothschild family, was a lover of Renée Vivien, with whom she wrote a number of books (under the penname Paule Riversdale). This volume, a novel written after their relationship ended (Vivien died in 1909) appears to be the last book published by her under this name and is quite rare. A very good copy, wrappers not present, bound in a rather curious unmarked binding with green stiff paper boards. $325.

The colophon on this example notes (in Prieto’s hand) that the book is “numero cuatro” printed for Lionel Bradley, Esq. Laid in at the rear of the edition is an original pencil sketch of a male nude by Prieto, which also bears a penciled sketch on verso. A lovely production by an under-appreciated artist. The author (1876-1932) was one of the most prominent gay activists and publishers in pre-Nazi Germany. He founded the Bund für Menschenrecht E.V. (BfM), the largest German gay rights organization, which is reputed to have had 48,000 members by 1929. He also published a number of important gay weeklies and monthlies, including Zeitschrift für Menschenrecht; Insel, Magazin der Einsamen; Das dritte Geschlecht; and Die Freundin, Wochenschrift für ideale Frauenfreundschaft. RAFFALOVICH, Marc-André. Uranisme et Unisexualité. Lyon and Paris: Stock and Masson (1896) 363pp. Raffalovich’s landmark study of homosexuality which created a furor in the medical establishment when it appeared. Raffalovich wrote the book to condemn what he considered the “fatuous” French medical opinion about sexual inversion, which concluded that male “inverts” were effeminate degenerates.The idea was so preposterous to Raffalovich that he coined a new term, “unisexuality,” for sexual attraction between men. An uncommon edition of a very important treatise on homosexuality. Very good in original publisher’s binding, corners a bit bumped and covers lightly worn. $850.

RIVERSDALE, Paule. (Renée Vivien & Hélène de Zuylen de Nyevelt). L’être double. Paris: Alphonse Lemerre (1904). Riversdale was the pseudonym adopted by Renée Vivien (née Pauline Mary Tarn) and Baroness Hélène de Zuylen for several publications that they collaborated on during their six-year love affair. Zuylen, a wealthy member of the Rothschild family was married and had several children, but the romance with Vivien remained an important part of their lives (Vivien considered herself married to the Baroness) until Zuylen ended the relationship in 1907. Vivien, shocked and humiliated by the withdrawal of Zuylen left Paris to travel in Japan and eventually died in 1909, severely depressed over her failed relationships. L’etre double is one of two novels produced by the couple. A very good copy in original wrappers, with cover illustration by Levy-Dhurmer. An uncommon collection of French legal documents relating to the arrest and prosecution of Ernest Merlet, a 24 year old arrested in Paris 1869 for “une folie mercourt” and indecencies with a boy named Eugene Lesaille. Included are a 32 page bound holograph “Extrait des Procedures deposes au Greffe de la Cour Imperiale de Paris, Assises de la Seine” titled “Procedure Merlet” and dated 1869 .The indictment lists the details of the offense with great specificity and the boy’s statement is also included. In addition, there are 22 pages of documents related to the case, including a holograph document entitled “Cour Imperiale de Paris chamber des mises en accusation” (4pp) which presents more details; a printed document signed by a judge relating to Merlet; a 4 page holograph court document entitled “Acte d’accusation contre Merlet” with more details and identifying the crime as ‘attentat a la pudeur, sans violence” a violation of art. 331 of the code; an interesting collection of holographs notes relating to the case, referring to some of the literature in the field. One note refers to “Faustin Helie, tome IV, p. 260” which notes “peut-être §331 aurait-il du distingué contre les simples actes de pudeur et d’obscenité et la defloration de l’enfant.” Several other pages refers to legal antecedents, whether the activity was habitual, etc., and cites Tardieu and references to pederasty; a printed list of the jurors in the case and other legal papers. Such collections of legal dossiers are quite uncommon. $1400.

New York (1924).The first, and extremely uncommon, anthology of homosexual literature to be published in America.The author, a graduate of Columbia University, compiled the anthology anonymously and remains somewhat of a mystery today. His identity has been revealed by the research of several scholars (notably Timothy d’Arch Smith and Donald Mader) and the story of the anthology has been discussed in the only reprint of the edition (Coltsfoot Press, 1978). The anthology commences with works from ancient Hebrew literature and progresses through the poetry of the 1920s. Included are a selection of known Uranian poets, such as Digby Mackworth Dolben, Edward Cracroft Lefroy, Edward Emmanuel Bradford, John Gambril Nicholson, John Moray Stuart-Young, Edmund John, “Philebus” (John Leslie Barford) and John Addington Symonds.There are also some surprising contributions from more traditional poets, such as Ernest Myers,William Alexander Percy, James Fennimore Cooper, Jr., Victor Starbuck, Katherine Mansfield, Willard Wattles, as well as the anthologist himself. Described by Timothy d’Arch Smith as a “startlingly thorough and well-informed anthology” it remains a classic in the field of gay literature and a cornerstone of collecting in the field. According to a prospectus issued by the anthologist, the book was issued in an edition of 150 copies, but relatively few are known to exist. The 2nd Earl of Castlehaven was convicted of abetting the rape of his wife and of committing sodomy with his male servants and the trial was a spectacular sex scandal, resulting in the execution of Castlehaven and his servants. Included with this publication is another sensational trial from 1699 involving adultery and divorce of Henry Duke of Norfolk. NP (1936). 4to., 2 vols., 37pp & 67pp.Two volumes of Verlaine’s erotic works, “Amies” dealing with lesbian poems and “Hombres” presenting homoerotic poetry, both lavishly illustrated with original watercolors by “Brutus,” a pseudonym for Laszlo Barta. “Amies’ contains 21 erotic illustrations and “Hombres” contains 38 watercolors, all highly eroticized images. Both volumes are bound together in a full vellum binding, the front and rear covers of which also contain original watercolor images. Both editions are limited to only 15 numbered copies (both examples being “15”).The illustrator was a Hungarian painter born in 1902 and he became a naturalized French citizen and did illustrations for a number of books and theatrical works. He appears to have used the pseudonym “Brutus” for his occasional erotic works, of which this appears to be his masterpiece.The editions are both extremely rare and are bound in vellum, top edge gilt, red jacket with spine label (light wear), slipcase is a bit scratched and worn. WESTON, Patrick (Gerald Hamilton). Desert Dreamers- A Novel of Friendship. London: At the Sign of the Tiger Lily [1914]. 112pp.The extremely rare first edition of this gay novel set in Algeria, written by the eccentric Hamilton, who later gained fame as “Mr. Norris” in Isherwood’s Berlin novels.The book is surprisingly forthright in its depiction of homosexual love and was reputedly suppressed upon publication, only to be republished in 1966 under the author’s name.The original prospectus for the book is also present, which describes the book as possessing “a psychological interest not surpassed by such a work as Tim or Dédé or The Garden God.”The story revolves about the passionate relationship of Julian, a “strong English lad” and the Arab boy Tayeb, who was “unconscious of anything but his own happiness.” A beautiful copy in the original jade colored illustrated boards, with illustrated endpapers and frontispiece, very light wear to spine. The prospectus notes that the sole agent for the distribution of the book was C.W. Beaumont, who later published several books under his own imprint and became very involved in the dance world. Quite rare, we find only two institutional copies. $4500.

Saunders (1921). 48pp. These letters by Apollinaire, Stuart Merrill, Edouard Berts and several others relate to the “scandalous” conjectures about an “orgy” that was conducted at Whitman’s funeral and about Whitman’s “inversion.”They appear here for the first time in English and are prefaced by a note on the controversies by the publisher. This copy bears the following notation on the endpaper from the publisher: “To the British Society for the Study of Sex Psychology” and also bears several printed stamps of the Society, as well as a successor library. Very good, bound in buckram boards, ex-library tags and small stamps. One of only 35 signed and numbered copies, printed for friends of the publisher. This is Saunders’s first publication on Whitman- he later composed a number of works and became an authority on the subject. Uncommon. $325.

The first french translation of this pornographic novel, originally published in London in 1893 and attributed to Oscar Wilde by some.The novel is significant in that it is one of the earliest pieces of English-language pornography to explicitly deal with a homosexual relationship . the work centers on the passionate and ultimately tragic affair between a young Frenchman named Camille de Grieux and the Hungarian pianist René Teleny. This edition is supplemented by a bibliographical notice composed by CharlesHenri Hirsch, a French bookseller who ran the Librairie Parisienne in London, wherein he reveals Wilde’s involvement in the matter and the history of the publication of the work.One of only 300 numbered copies, both volumes are in very good condition, with only light offsetting to endpapers.
