Hawaii State Assessment Program

This report describes the school and its setting; provides information about the school's administrators, teachers, students and facilities; summarizes progress made based on the school's improvement plan, and reports student achievement results along with other vital signs.

School Description Eleele School resides on 14 acres of land with a breathtaking view of the ocean and Hanapepe Valley. Its facilities include seven permanent classroom buildings, four (4) portable classrooms, a library, an administrative building, a new cafetorium, and an old cafetorium. The old cafetorium serves as a general purpose building for assemblies and community programs. The entire facility is networked with fiber optics and has the capacity for both local and wide area communications. Administration, faculty and staff work on developing an atmosphere of ‘ohana, and maintaining a safe environment where students and parents feel welcomed. The lush and spacious campus provides an inviting and peaceful place where students can learn and play. Programs are created to assist students toward meeting academic, personal, and community goals. Students who attend the school come from the surrounding areas of 'Ele'ele, Hanapepe, and Kaumakani. Eleele Elementary School Community Council, E Kuilima (working together on a given task), is composed of representatives from our administration, faculty, staff, parents, student body, and community.

School Setting Community Profile The Community Profile information updated in this school report reflects selected 2010 demographics for the High School Complex (HSC) area in which this school resides. Profile data are based on the 2010 U.S. Census, the American Community Survey (ACS) 2006-2010 five-year estimates (centric to 2008), and incorporation of Hawaii’s HSC boundary areas with updated 2010 Census geography. Figures for educational attainment and median household income are sample estimates obtained from the ACS, adapted to conform to HSC geography, and should be considered rough approximations of census counts. School Status and Improvement Report

School Improvement Summary of Progress `Ele`ele Elementary School has embarked on an ambitious plan to implement a variety of initiatives starting in the 2011/2012 school year. Hawaii joined forty-four other states and three territories in adopting the more rigorous Common Core State Standards. The lower grades began implementing the Common Core State Standards during the 2011/2012 school year. Along with the upper grades, they have been participating in an examination of the Common Core State Standards with the assistance of a variety of resources. All teachers in all grades have attended the State DOE-sponsored workshops in Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition, Kauai Complex resource teachers have worked with all teachers on an ongoing basis in unwrapping the standards. Grades 3 – 5 will join the lower grades in implementing the more rigorous Common Core State Standards in the 2012/2013 school year. The school’s leadership team has attended and participated in several work sessions with Steve Ventura, a consultant with Doug Reeves’ The Leadership and Learning Center in the State DOE mandated data team process, prioritizing and unwrapping the Common Core State Standards and creating common formative assessments. The school has been and will continue working in conjunction with the other schools in the complex. Work is slated to continue through next school year. Another group in the school has engaged in year-long coursework that gave instruction and practice in creating performance task assessments. These types of assessments will be used as a component of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium’s replacement for the Hawaii State Assessment in the near future. These performance task assessments represent a significant change from the typical testing format in the Hawaii State Assessment. Performance tasks require students to apply knowledge instead of simple recall of knowledge. The whole school also received professional development in the area of persuasive writing in the Fall of 2011. The reason for this training was to help prepare students for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium assessment component of argumentative writing. As with the performance task assessments, this is also a significant addition to the testing format found in the Hawaii State Assessment. The final major initiative the school engaged in the 2001/2012 school year was an ongoing process of continuous improvement with the Data Teams process as provided by Targeted Leadership Consulting. This consulting group is working with the schools in the West Complex. This process of continuous improvement incorporates a professional development cycle in addition to the Data Teams cycle of evaluating student data and progress, and adjusting instruction and interventions accordingly. All initiatives are designed to enhance students’ educational achievement and prepare them for the future assessments that will measure that achievement. Those initiatives are also designed to assist teachers in the transition from the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards to the more rigorous Common Core State Standards.

School facilities inspection results From the 2011 school year school facilities inspection data are no longer available at the state level. Department schools are still required to do an annual assessment of its facilities in the following areas: Grounds, Building exterior, Building interior, Equipment/Furnishings, Health/Safety and Sanitation. All department schools should have their annual inspections completed by the second quarter of the school year. Historically the majority of the department schools attained inspection assessment points in the following ranges, 9-15 earning a "Satisfactory" rating and 16-18 points earning the highest "Very Good" rating.
