PRESS 2010 Rodney’s Vineyard Syrah 92 Points/Cellar Selection - This is an

2011 Santa Barbara County Syrah 90 points/Editors’ Choice - The cool-climate origins of this wine

2011 Ashley’s Chardonnay 93 points - A big step up and a brilliant

excellent Syrah, but you’ll want to cellar it because it shows great aging potential. It’s rich and dense in blackberry jam and cassis flavors, with mocha and bacon notes that add to the complexity. The tannins are profound, but fine; give it at least six years.

Chardonnay, the 2011 Chardonnay Ashley’s gold/green tinged color is followed by a steely, pure 2011 that has classic white peach, citrus blossom, mineral and white flower-like aromas and flavors as well as a lively, focused and elegant palate. Building in richness in the glass, yet with no loss of focus or purity, it is top flight stuff and, for the quality, is a great value. Drink now–2016.

2011 Sierra Madre Vineyard Chardonnay Limited quantities available!

92 points - The most perfumed and fruit-driven, the 2011 Chardonnay

Sierra Madre Vineyard shows hints of tropical fruit and floral undertones, medium body and a supple, finesse-driven style. Approachable and delicious, it should impress for 1–2 years. Drink now–2015.

2011 Bien Nacido Vineyard Chardonnay - Sorry … sold out! 92 points - More masculine and mineral-laced, the 2011 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard offers up classic golden fruits, crushed stone, charcoal and toasty notes to go with a rich, structured and firm feel on the palate. It, too, is a superb effort. Drink now–2016.

2011 Clone 115 Pinot Noir 91 points - More elegant and complex, with less richness and

more focus, the 2011 Pinot Noir Clone 115 is loaded with complex underbrush, crushed flowers, forest floor and sweet red berry fruits. Medium-bodied and textured, with a firm, focused core, it opens up beautifully in the glass, so decant if drinking anytime soon. It will continue to evolve gracefully through 2021. Drink now-2021.

2010 The Big Easy 91 Points - With loads of upfront appeal, the 2010 The Big Easy

dishes out plenty of chocolaty dark fruits, leather, ground pepper and asphalt aromas to go with a full-bodied, voluptuously textured palate. Seamless, beautifully balanced and even elegant, with clean aromas and flavors, it will continue to deliver the goods for another 5-6 years, if not longer. Drink now-2019.

are revealed immediately in the freshly crushed black and white pepper aromas. In the mouth, it’s extraordinarily rich in blackberry jam and cassis, with the chocolaty, roasted meat notes that frequently characterize a good Syrah. Although it’s pretty tannic, it’s appealing now, and should develop for 4-5 more years.

New Release!

90+ Points - More masculine and firm (which is the hallmark of this vineyard), the 2011 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard offers up mineral-drenched aromas of black cherries, ground pepper, flower garden and gun flint on the nose. Medium-bodied and structured on the palate, with notable tannic grip, it should be given another 1–2 years in the cellar and drunk over the following decade. Drink 2015–2021.

2011 Rodney’s Vineyard Viognier 90 Points - The 2011 Viognier Rodney’s Vineyard is slightly

richer and more complete, with plenty of orange blossom, citrus oil, sappy flowers and hints of peach all emerging from the glass. Balanced and with good acidity and plenty of mid-palate depth, it’s a classy, textbook Viognier to drink over the coming couple of years. Drink now–2015.

2011 Pommard Clone Pinot Noir 90 Points - The most Burgundian of the Pinots, the 2011 Pinot

Noir Pommard Clone has an earthy, underbrush-slanted core to go with sweet berry fruits, rose petal and hints of minerality. A medium-bodied, structured effort that has outstanding definition and purity, it, too, will be better in another handful of years and have a decade of longevity. Drink 2015–2021.

2010 Rodney’s Vineyard Syrah 90 Points - More serious, concentrated and layered, the 2010

Syrah Rodney’s Vineyard has knockout black currant, toasted spice, chocolate and leafy herb aromas and flavors all soaring from the glass. Rich, full-bodied and upfront, yet still clean and beautifully drinkable, it will offer immense pleasure over the coming 4-5 years or more. Drink now–2018+.

FESS files Fall Holidays

Harvest with a Bang

I

H

don’t know if it’s just me, but it feels like the transition between summer and fall happened overnight here in Santa Barbara. I love this time of year when we enjoy cool, crisp mornings and crystal clear days. Halloween is upon us, and this holiday makes me think of all the fun times Laureen and I used to have taking our kids trick or treating Addie the mighty lion through Los Olivos. Now we enjoy tagging along and watching the grandkids go door to door filling their bags with candy. I think I’m going to have to learn to drink Red Bull to keep up! Hope you all have a great fallholiday season, and thank you for continuing to enjoy Fess Parker wines!

Best,

arvest started with a bang this year! We were not yet finished with bottling when all of the Pinot Noir in Santa Rita Hills came knocking on our door. This was ten days earlier than last year, and more than two weeks earlier than 2011. We had a warm, dry spring and summer with a tropical heat wave the first week of September. All of this combined to create a vintage where all of the varieties wanted to be picked at once. Pinot Noir was first, with Viognier and Chardonnay hot on its heels. Syrah was not much behind and the winery was getting filled up. Luckily a cooling trend moved in and allowed us to catch our breath. I always welcome those cool, foggy mornings during harvest. Not only was this harvest early, but it was big! We saw bigger berries and heavier clusters than usual, but the grapes still possessed wonderful flavors Blair Fox and concentration. We also bought a new piece of equipment for this harvest. It is a post de-stemmer berry sorting shaker table. So now, not only do we hand sort all of the clusters, but we also sort the individual berries. Some may think this extremely costly and time consuming, but we are willing to do whatever we need to do to make the absolute highest quality wine! Speaking of the sorting table … I better get back to it!

Cheers from all of us in the cellar,
