“I have travelled to 38 countries all around the world with over 7 mainstream travel companies. Wild Frontiers has a fresh new approach to travelling which has given me one of the most interesting and enjoyable holidays I have ever had” Jean Walters

Welcome to the latest Wild Frontiers brochure Discovering that most of our previous publications were often out of date before the ink was dry on the page – with destinations being added and subtracted, prices fluctuating and itineraries developing – we realised just how inflexible the printed word can be. With the wonders of modern technology and the fact that the internet is now available in almost every home, we are able to convey huge amounts of information (which can be kept up-to-date at the push of a button) to our clients in a convenient and ecologically sound way. As such there seems little point these days in producing huge, glossy brochures.

“In the world of adventure travel, Wild Frontiers are true pioneers” Lyn Hughes, Editor. Wanderlust Magazine

Therefore, please see this not as a traditional brochure outlining everything we do, but more as a calling card, to illustrate the kind of company we are and the experiences we offer. It is a tool to help you understand the essence of our trips and one that will hopefully inspire you to visit our website, where you’ll find a whole host of interactive features, from destination information to slideshows, client testimonials, travel blogs and videos, and, of course, all of our trip details and prices. We hope you enjoy it!

Who We Are

How it all began…

WILD FRONTIERS is a multi-award-winning adventure travel company specialising in stylish and original tailor-made holidays and small group tours to some of the most interesting countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

When I set out from London on my motorbike to drive across Africa in 1991, I had little idea where my travels would lead… just Cape Town I presumed. But three books, a TV film and many miles later, my passion for adventure and a desire to share these experiences with others, led me to setting up Wild Frontiers.

Founded in 2002 by the acclaimed adventure travel writer Jonny Bealby, Wild Frontiers is a company ‘run by travellers, for travellers’, and our reputation has been forged by creating exciting itineraries that combine true off-the-beaten-track travel with a unique blend of style and adventure. In January 2010, Wild Frontiers joined forces with the tailor-made, cultural travel company, Silk Road and Beyond, who are now operating within our specialist tailor-made department. This merger has bought together two like-minded companies, and ensures that our clients benefit from the wealth of knowledge our new team of highly specialised staff can provide, now all located under one roof.

Since then, we’ve aimed to offer genuine travellers access to the worlds’ most incredible destinations. These are the places I found the most beautiful, fascinating and rewarding on my own adventures, and those that our guides are equally passionate about. We are firm believers that travelling is all about the experience and it’s the finer details - the places you stay, the transport and route that gets you there and the people you meet along the way - that make the trip. As such we aim to uncover the lives of the people through exploring their landscape, history, culture and cuisine and ultimately leave our clients with the unforgettable experience of having journeyed beneath each region’s surface and discovered the heartbeat within. Jonny Bealby

Wild Frontiers Difference As a young and innovative company, Wild Frontiers is delighted to have been voted one of the ‘Top 10 Tour Operators’ by Wanderlust readers for 3 years in a row. When National Geographic Adventure Magazine awarded us a similar accolade earlier this year, we were equally thrilled. Personal Service & Expertise Our London office is manned by experienced expedition leaders and every trip we run stems from their firsthand knowledge - in short, we run the kind of holidays that as passionate travellers, we like to do ourselves. When you ring our office, you can be guaranteed to chat to someone that knows the region and the terrain and is able to offer sound and practical advice. When creating bespoke, tailor-made itineraries our specialist travel consultants will take you though all the options available, giving you a personal insight into what there is to see and do in each place, plus invaluable recommendations on the more practical matters such as the most interesting accommodation available and advice on tipping. Authentic Experiences Our unique, original itineraries – be they for small group travel or individually created for our tailor-made clients – allow you to take journeys that venture beneath the surface of the region. Unlike the plethora of ‘world specialists’ who purport to know a hundred destinations, we concentrate on the locations we know and love. We don’t source our itineraries from other agents, nor do we run the same tour over and over (thus creating a ‘tourist circuit’, spoiling an untouched

5

region). Instead, we rarely run any group tour more than a couple of times a year and they are on routes we have discovered for ourselves, meaning we are able to give a truly authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience. Be the First Our style of travel is all about exploration, and nothing excites us more than opening up new routes to genuine travellers. We keep abreast of new destinations and are often the first to return to places that have vanished from the tourist map. We were the first back into Pakistan after 9/11, the first to return to Kashmir after a decade of tourist isolation, and the first to run a commercial travel trip to Afghanistan for almost 30 years. Since then we have helped bring Colombia, Yemen and Georgia back into the tourist fold, specialising in groundbreaking reconnaissance trips and imaginative expeditions. Small Group Size On our escorted tours, we believe it is imperative to keep the group sizes small. Most trips are limited to an average maximum of 12 travellers, thus giving you more access to fragile cultures, better opportunities to interact with local people, and the knowledge you are making less of an impact while there.

“Wild Frontiers journeys offer great personal insight and a genuine responsibility to the vulnerable people they visit.” Ed Douglas, The guardian

We are frequently asked what makes Wild Frontiers different from other tour operators. Below are a few of the factors that we believe set us apart from our competitors and form the reasons as to why our clients travel with us again and again… Cost of Tours We believe in an honest, upfront pricing structure so you know exactly what the tour will cost before you book. On our group tours we avoid local payments, ‘optional extras’ or forcing our clients to go through the annoying procedure of splitting every meal bill. Our tours are provided on a predominantly full board basis, with mineral water, government permits, entrance fees and transport all included. Added Value We also realise to be a successful small travel organiser it’s imperative we deliver the best experience we can through whatever facilities are available to us. • Accommodation: On all of our holidays we aim to provide you with the best accommodation available. By best we do not necessarily mean most expensive but most interesting, characterful and convenient: this might mean spending a night in a four poster bed in a royal palace or on a yak fur rug in a nomad’s yurt. • Transport: Your transport is also an important part of your holiday experience and as such we aim to provide the most comfortable, interesting and varied transport possible. As such you might find yourself in

open-topped jeeps in Pakistan, a converted Soviet army truck in Kyrgyzstan, a toy train in India or on a camel in the Sahara. • On our tailor-made tours we aim to provide a service value that is hard to match. On arrival in India for example we now provide our clients with a local mobile phone with all the numbers you might need pre-programmed. With our personal knowledge of the properties we use we are often able to secure the best rooms, and organise special events unique to us. Responsible Travel Awarded the prestigious 5 star RT status by AITO (Association of Independent Tour operators), responsible tourism has always been an integral part of our company ethos and our adventures are designed with the local people, culture and eco-system in mind.

Jonny Bealby – Founder and MD Jonny’s extensive experience of Africa, Asia and more recently South America, is born of his passion for the diverse peoples and cultures. An acclaimed author, travel journalist and lecturer to the Royal Geographical Society, he divides his time between the office, guiding and searching out new adventures.

Key Personnel We believe our staff and guides are our greatest asset. Often having lived and worked in our destinations they have a depth of knowledge and experience that continually enables Wild Frontiers to provide unique, unforgettable adventures. Here are brief biographies of a few… Emma Place – Head of Group Tour Sales After studying Art and Design at Uni, Emma backpacked through the Far East and Australa for a year. On her return to the UK in 2007, Emma joined Wild Frontiers as a part of the sales team, working her way up to the dizzy heights of Head of Sales. During her time with WF, Emma has ventured to Syria, India and Central Asia.

7

Marc Leaderman – Head of Operations After working with Explore Worldwide for 10 years in more than 30 countries, Marc joined Wild Frontiers to head up the logistics team. Kat Hart - Guide Travel is the only thing Kat ever wanted to do. As soon as she was physically able she ran away to India, where she continued her martial arts studies and fell in love with the Andaman Islands. Throughout her travels Kat has repeatedly and overwhelmingly found her heart in Africa. Kat now spends her time sailing and tour leading in her quest for a “life less ordinary”.

Mette Stein – Guide Mette spent 16 years traversing Africa, with side trips to the Middle East & Central Asia. She studied Art History & Archaeology at SOAS, and is an active campaigner for responsible tourism practices.

Our Type of Holidays Wild Frontiers specialises in tailor-made holidays and small group escorted tours, with set departure dates. The ethos of Wild Frontiers is to provide unique and stylish tours that combine the highlights of the region with some of the lesser known wonders. Where many claim to get ‘off-the-beatentrack’, our genuine passion for exploration means that we are constantly sourcing out new places and experiences which our clients then benefit from.

Tailor-Made Holidays Private Journeys With the merger of Silk Road and Beyond, and the creation of our specialist tailor-made department, for the discerning traveller, Wild Frontiers is now ideally placed to offer the very best bespoke holidays on the market. By using our local guides, contacts and expert knowledge of the regions to which we travel - literally down to the best time of day or day of the week to visit certain sites, the best local restaurants and even the most exquisite hotel bedrooms - we can help you create a totally unique and unsurpassable tailormade holiday. So if you’re planning a holiday with a little added spice, want to take your family on the journey of a lifetime or simply prefer to travel on your own, with a partner or a few close friends, Wild Frontiers now specialises in creating tailor-made holidays to suit your individual needs.

11

Our Private Journeys offer carefully constructed holidays to exciting destinations, on pre-designed itineraries, based on a set number of people travelling. These holidays, shown on the website, are essentially our favourite itineraries, utilising our favourite hotels, with suggested sightseeing programmes, offered on a fixed price basis. These exclusive tours include private English-speaking guides and a private vehicle with driver throughout. Enjoy the convenience of being able to stop when you wish, travel at your own pace and concentrate on the sights, activities and experiences that interest you. To give the best value, we have designed these trips with a full schedule but for a more relaxed holiday you can easily add extra nights at any point, drop activities as you wish or modify the itinerary.

Group Tours

Private Groups

Running a limited number of departures a year, we focus mainly on cultural tours, but also run specialist trekking, horse riding, activity and chill-out trips. We opt for quality rather than quantity, using guides with a passion for travel and knowledge of their particular region. Always using the road less travelled, we get you into the homes of the locals – be they princes or shepherds – and many of the secret places that will make your trip unique. We believe that a small group size is imperative for this kind of travel and we therefore keep our average maximum number to 12.

If you have a group of friends or relatives, or are part of a club or organisation, and would like to travel on a private tour organised by Wild Frontiers – either using an existing WF itinerary, guide and departure date or by tailor-making a trip of your own, we’d be happy to help. By arranging your own group you can qualify for significant discounts.

Understanding that some of the best times are had through self-exploration, we don’t cram every day with group activities but leave you plenty of time to explore or relax as you wish. There are no flag-waving guides with us – we offer specialist group travel for the independently minded traveller. Ultimately our escorted group tours are journeys that we have loved as writers, explorers, travellers and photographers, and which have been designed to offer authentic and memorable experiences in some of the most remote and intriguing regions of the world.

Wild World

Wild Culture

Since inception, Wild Frontiers has been committed to producing the most innovative and groundbreaking holidays on the market. Whether you are looking for serious adventure, or a more relaxing and luxurious experience, we have always strived to offer something different and memorable.

Our cultural tours focus on many aspects of a country such as the classical and archaeological and its culture and landscapes and tend to visit some of their lesser known parts often in remote rural locations. We arrange comfortable accommodation for these trips in boutique hotels, guesthouses, lodges or local style accommodation. Our cultural tours operate in most of our 55 destinations from Libya and Syria to Uzbekistan and Laos. (TM, GT & PJ)

In our Wild World portfolio we have put together the very best collection of original holidays, targeted to specific audiences, and hope that this will help to inspire and guide you to find a trip that is perfect for you. Some of these holidays may be angled solely for the tailor-made clients, while others might only be possible in groups. But whichever category appeals to you, we are confident that in our Wild World there will be an inspiring experience waiting for you. Key: TM – Tailor-made GT – Group Tour PJ – Private Journey

“Every time I go on a trip with Wild Frontiers I don’t think it can get any better but it does. I have just come back from an achingly good trip to Iran and can only console myself by thinking about my next jaunt. I can’t recommend them highly enough.” Juliette C.

Wild In Style

Wild Beaches

With an increase in amazing properties and remarkable experiences popping up in the most unlikely of places, we are now in a position to offer exceptional holidays, of the highest standard, in some of the world’s most extraordinary locations.

As our staff and guides travel the globe, we are discovering a number of beach holidays, which lend themselves perfectly to pre or post trip extensions.

While most of our competitors prefer to play things safe, by offering their clients tried and trusted hotels, we like nothing more than discovering something a bit different, exposing our clients to an incredible experience as well as a comfortable stay. As such we invest a great deal of time and resources, researching new products and sending our staff to check them out. So whether it’s a new camp in the Okavango Delta, a renovated castle in Rajasthan, a tango course in Buenos Aires or a luxury walk in the Himalayas, we will work with you to provide the very best holiday imaginable. (TM & PJ)

“Why choose Wild Frontiers? Because Jonny Bealby and his team give 100% enthusiasm, flawless organisation and a great itinerary.” Tim Milwood

For example, if you are travelling in India on either a group trip or tailor-made holiday, you might like to spend some relaxing down-time in Goa, Kerala or even further afield on the Lakshadweep or Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Similarly if travelling to Botswana why not spend a few days R&R on an amazing tropical paradise off the Mozambique coast. With knowledge of some stunning beach properties from East Africa to South East Asia we can offer magical beach retreats, well off the beaten track. (TM)

Wild Romance In the past, traditional romantic holidays - be it honeymoons, anniversaries or simple amorous sojourns - entailed lying on palm-fringed beaches, sipping cocktails and sharing romantic moments as the sun goes down. However, in the immortal words of Bob Dylan, ‘the times they are a-changing.’

As we get more adventurous and luxury springs up in the most unlikely of places, couples are dusting off their beach towels and turning their romantic holidays into adventurous, one-off ‘trips of a lifetime’; the kind of dream trip they can look back on and tell their grandchildren about.

From ‘Star beds’ beds in Kenya, to yak fur rugs in Kyrgyzstan, or fairytale palaces in India to luxury estancias in Argentina, with the in-depth knowledge we have of our locations, and the secret romantic places they hold, we are ideally placed to give you something a little different. So if you’re planning your honeymoon, or simply want an exciting holiday where romance is the key, let us offer you something different. (TM & PJ)

“Riding through the Andes was one of the most amazing things I have ever done.” Jamie Flint

Wild Horses For equine enthusiasts we believe there are few better ways of witnessing the wonders of nature than on horseback. To be up in the mountains, drifting through the tall grass, across crystal streams and wild open steppe lands, with only the eagles and the nomads for company, is a truly uplifting experience. Likewise, to ride across the Andes with local gauchos or through Indian villages where few westerners have ventured, to gallop over the North African deserts or witness the extraordinary landscapes of the Okavango Delta from the saddle, are experiences that are sure to stay with you for a very long time. We currently have horse riding holidays in Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Morocco, Botswana, Rajasthan, Georgia, Mozambique, Ecuador and across the Andes from Chile to Argentina - and this number is constantly on the rise… mainly as Jonny Bealby – author of Silk Dreams, www.wildfrontiers.co.uk Troubled Road: On Horseback through Central Asia – is rather partial to these trips!

And with former champion-jockey Richard Dunwoody working closely with us we are constantly on the lookout for saddling up some new adventures. At present the majority of our horse treks are geared toward experienced riders, but we also have special departures suitable for novices and those wishing to hone their riding skills. (TM, GT & PJ)

Wild Life Every destination we offer has certain elements that add to the overall experience of travel, be it spectacular scenery or rich heritage and culture. As part of our portfolio, we are delighted to offer a number of destinations that lend themselves perfectly to the nature lover, and to those looking for an authentic wildlife experience. From viewing desert adapted elephant and black rhino on the dry plains of Damaraland in Namibia, to stepping over marine iguanas and sea lions on the beaches of the Galapagos islands, we have put together a series of trips that will excite and inspire anyone with a passion for biodiversity. Little can compare to crossing the Okavango Delta on horseback, riding amongst the big five and sleeping out under the stars. Alternatively, take a tiger safari in one of India’s national parks or go whale watching off the tropical shores of Sri Lanka. From 5* luxury safaris to complete wilderness experiences, Wild Frontiers offers trips to suit all interests, tastes and budgets. (TM & PJ)

Wild Walks and Treks Knowing that some of you have neither the time nor the inclination for long trekking holidays, but would still like to explore some of the world’s most beautiful, remote and interesting mountain ranges on foot, we have put together a portfolio of stunning adventures focused around – but not solely comprising – a good mountain walk. At present we have Wild Walks in the Georgian Caucasus, the Kashmiri Himalayas, the Simiens of Ethiopia, the Taurus Mountains of central Turkey, the Talesh Mountains of Iran and the Hindu Kush in Northern Pakistan, as well as lengthier treks in Afghanistan and Nepal. Wild Child Knowing how our clients love to experience all things ‘wild’, we have decided that it’s never too young to start your Wild Frontiers journey. With that in mind we have chosen some of our favourite places and given them a unique family twist. Whether you are taking your first big adventure together as a family or maybe returning to old haunts with older children, we have something that should appeal to new and seasoned travellers alike, and make your family holiday an experience to remember. With a couple of group tour exceptions – alternative Christmas and Easter in Rajasthan – all the trips are tailor-made to your own specification so you can

choose which accommodation and transport as well as activities and excursions will suit your family best – so hopefully avoiding the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ scenario! If learning how to cook a knockout curry, riding a camel, camping out under the stars, face painting an elephant or eagle hunting appeal, then we’ve got plenty to keep you and your kids occupied. (TM & PJ)

“This Summer’s African adventure in Botswana and Mozambique was a boy’s paradise. From tracking the world’s most dangerous predators, to galloping across flood plains and even extreme fishing for supper... they loved it! Best of all, they didn’t have to wash for days!” Nick Bullen

Wild Recces

Wild Expeditions

Whilst continuing to focus on our tried and trusted destinations, we are always on the lookout for exciting new locations and itineraries to add to our portfolio. Whether through our guides interests, our own information or your requests, we like to offer the most novel and original trips, which means constantly developing new ideas. Every year we are delighted to offer our intrepid clients the chance to accompany us on our recce trips as they are invaluable in helping design and refine itineraries for future trips. (GT & PJ)

In 2008 we launched a series of extraordinary expeditions on classic ancient routes, where the itinerary is dictated not through an office in London, but by the events of the day. With many members of the WF team cutting their teeth in exploratory adventure travel – as travel writers, polar explorers and expedition leaders – we are keen to return to our roots, getting out into the wilds of this incredible earth, and taking you with us…. So far we have ridden horses across the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, trekked in Afghanistan’s remote Wakhan Corridor and joined a Tuareg camel train across the sand seas of the Sahara. Soon to come is the mystical journey to Nepal’s Crystal Mountain and the epic river journey along the Congo River through Africa’s dark heart. (GT & PJ)

“Blazing the trail across the High Pamirs, the epicentre of the epic Great Game, was a truly amazing experience. What could be more exciting than investigating the lost routes of some of the world’s most daring explorers and spies!” Duncan Grossart

The Wild Frontiers Foundation In order to facilitate an enduring support structure for the communities we visit, Wild Frontiers has set up a charitable foundation through which we can channel funds to both existing aid agencies and our own development projects. In addition to organising ethically sensitive tours, having our own charitable foundation allows us to raise money – through the cost of our tours, charity trips and fund raising events – which can then be used to fund various projects to help build sustainable futures for some of the world’s poorest people.

Wherever possible, we arrange for our clients to visit these projects to see for themselves where and how this money is being spent. This is a very exciting development for us and something we hope in time will become a major part of our organisation.

Wild Frontiers currently has 12 partner organisations working on projects in countries in which we run our tours. Many of these have an educational focus as we believe the best way to a brighter future is to educate the young.
