BLUEBERRY Blueberries are easily grown by the home gardener but do need an acidic soil pH of about 4.5 and no higher than 5.2, Use flowers of sulphur to lower the pH, adding acid peat, or mulching with pine needles will also lower the PH. Berries can be eaten fresh, cooked in pies, muffins, jams and hot fruit sauces. All Blueberries @ $18.00 CENTURION A rabbit eye type. Ripens mid Feb. to early April so considered a late season variety. An excellent cropper, producing large clusters of medium sized fruit (12-14mm). Crisp aromatic and spicy flavour. Pollinate with Tifblue and Southland. MISTY

A high bush variety with a mild sweet flavour. Medium to large sized berries. Best results when planted with another variety. Easily grown and adapts well to most conditions.

O’NEAL Southern high bush type. An early season variety ripening over 4 weeks. A low chill variety and suitable also for Northern Districts Waikato, North. Berries are medium blue, large sweet and relatively firm. Great tasting variety. PETITE BLUE A high bush variety, high yielding, and smaller tasty berries. Summer ripening fruit, low chill variety. Pollinate with O’Neal. SOUTHLAND A Rabbit eye type. Develops huge shiny berry clusters in summer on a high yielding bush. For the best flavour, leave to ripen on the bush. Pollinate with Centurion or Tifblue. TIFBLUE A Rabbit eye variety – and one of the most outstanding blueberry’s ever grown. The fruit are large, light blue and ripen late in the season. It is vigorous and very productive and hardier than many Rabbit eye types. Pollinates with other Rabbit eye types. Which Blueberry should I grow? As a general rule Northern high bush suit gardens Waikato south as they have a high chill requirement and flower in mid spring. (Dixi, Bluecrop and Atlantic) SORRY due to demand all sold out in winter. Southern high bush varieties are best grown in warmer parts of New Zealand (Waikato North), their late winter flowers are less likely to be hit by frost. They ripen October-December) (Misty, O’Neal, Petite Blue) Rabbit eye types Flower in early spring so need to be protected from frosts. But they are much more tolerant of drought, heat and less than ideal soil conditions. (Centurion, Southland, Tifblue)

BRAMBLES All brambles are listed below and priced at @ $14.00 BLACKBERRY – They bear fruit on 2 year old canes, when these have fruited cut these out at the base and tie one year shoots down for fruiting the next year.

THORNLESS As mentioned a thorn-less blackberry which is not inclined to take over the garden. Long fruit laterals produce good crops of luscious blackberries, medium in size and jet black when fully ripe. Harvest is from early February until late March

BOYSENBERRY - Habit 1.5 m high and spreads. They fruit on 2 year old canes. BAY SURPRISE Starts fruiting pre Christmas and carries on for approximately 6 weeks. A thorny plants unlike the Mapua but with lovely long dark fruit ideal for eating fresh, jamming and spectacular mixed with apple as an apple/boysenberry crumble, delicious.

Super sweet deal 2 for $20.00 of the Boysenberry Bay Surprise. MAPUA

A wonderful boysenberry to grow as it is almost thorn less and the fruit have an outstanding flavor. Ripening after the other boysenberry from January to February.

RASPBERRY Generally only leave 4-5 canes to produce fruit per plant. Early = December ripening, Mid season = January/February and Late season = March into April CLUTHA Summer fruiting, (Dec/Jan) medium sized red shiny fruit easily removed. Good yields. Suitable for Central and Southern districts. FAIRVIEW An early to mid season variety (December through January). The fruit are large, light red well flavoured berries. Bears heavy crops. GLEN PROSSEN A newer Variety of Scottish decent. Quite a sweet tasting fruit that produces just after Christmas. A single cropper that requires a cold winter for fruit to set. Has a great growth habit for the home gardener. A big cropper. HERITAGE A lovely variety for the home gardener to grow as it is an autumn or late season cropping variety. It fruits in March onwards. Lovely dark red fruit. Easy care as when it is finished fruiting just cut those canes that have fruited back down to ground level. LEWIS

A mid season summer fruiting variety with very good yields. It produces moderate numbers of medium vigour canes with few spines. The fruit is medium to large, medium red very firm and shiny. The fruit is easy to pick is a double cropper and also suited to a warmer climate..

QUALICUM An early to mid season variety (December) it is a heavy cropper of large, firm medium red fruit with excellent flavour, good shelf life. Shows resistance to Botrytis. SKEENA

An excellent variety of Raspberry with almost thorn less 'canes' and bright glossy berries with an excellent flavour. Bred with good resistance to fruit rot. The fruit ripens in early summer.

TULAMEEN A mid season variety which carries on fruiting for a long time. It has good yields and moderate upright cane growth. The fruit are attractive bright red, large to very large in size, show good firmness. Fruit flavour and shelf life are excellent. SOUTHLAND A variety which is grown commercially, considered to be the sweetest and tastiest of all raspberries. It is a strong grower and produces heavy crops of large, firm, roundish fruit which fruits in late December. Does best in cooler districts.

TAYBERRY

This Bramble is a cross between a Blackberry and a Raspberry and originates Scotland. It’s berries are delicious sweet and aromatic large fruit which are best eaten fresh. The fruit are easy to pick and best done when the berry colour is a deep maroon. Plant in sun/semishade in a deep acidic soil.

CITRUS – All citrus are @ $30.00 each GRAPEFRUIT

GRAPEFRUIT – CUTLERS RED Large fruit with a distinct flavour, ideal for breakfast, drinks or preserves. Deep orange coloured rind. Large amount of fruit produced in December. GRAPEFRUIT STAR RUBY Fruit are large, juicy yellow skinned, with red flesh. They have a strong pleasant flavour. The tree is moderately frost tender, large crops of fruit in August.

LEMON

LEMON - MEYER A very popular lemon for the home garden. More cold tolerant than other varieties. The lemons are medium in size, thin skinned, frost tolerant and have sweetly fragrant flowers.

We have a lovely strong well branched grade of Meyer lemon some in fruit Spring Special @ $20.00 each, every home should have a lemon LEMON - YEN BEN A prolific bearer of thin skinned juicy fruit and has their main crop in July.

LIME

- TAHITIAN Tolerates a wide range of soils. Fruit resemble a smooth-skinned lemon, seedless and very acid and ripen mainly in spring. KAFFIR A low growing evergreen shrub mainly used for its highly flavoured leaves particularly in Asian dishes. Ideal in containers but, water well. It has unusual 2 lobed leaves. MANDARIN MANDARIN – CLEMENTINE medium sized dark coloured, sweet flavoured fruit. They are thin skinned without many seeds. A heavy producer of fruit in late winter. 2 Metres. MANDARIN - SATSUMA A very popular, sweet seedless easy to grow and peel variety. The fruit ripens in winter on a highly ornamental tree. Fruit may become dry if left too long on the tree.

ORANGE - Citrus sinensis ORANGE – NAVELINA Large oval-shaped fruit are juicy with excellent flavour, produced in July-August. Frost tender so needs a warm sunny sheltered site. Mature height 3 metres. ORANGE _ NEWHAL NAVEL Large oval-shaped fruit, sweet and juicy, heavy producer from May-June. ORANGE - WASHINGTON NAVEL A high quality orange with seedless fruit which has excellent flavour and is sweet and juicy. The fruit mature in winter (July/August) Moderately frost tender. TANGELO - Citrus reticulata x C. paradisi Height 4 x 3 metres TANGELO - SEMINOLE A vigorous and high yielding fruit tree with lush green foliage. Fruit are large, smooth and glossy with deep red coloured fruit. Seminole has high juice and a rich sweet flesh.

DWARF CITRUS – Dwarf rootstock height 1.5-2 metres LEMON - MEYER Medium sized fruit, thin skinned, frost tolerant & have sweetly fragrant flowers. LIME – KEY A vigorous grower (1.5-2 m) dense growth and with decent thorns!!! The fruit is juicy and great for Key Lime pie, ripens July to December. *** Something a bit more unusual**** LIME - TAHITIAN Fruit resemble a green smooth-skinned lemon, seedless and very acid, spring ripen. ORANGE – SEVILLE A SOUR Orange with very bitter tasting fruit, superb for marmalades and preserves. The blossom is highly perfumed and the plant will stand light frost.

CURRANTS

They prefer morning sun and it’s important to not let them dry out, add organic matter as mulch.

MAGNUS – BLACK Moderately, vigorous, hardy upright bush, big fat even sized berries ripening mid Dec/Jan. Yields up to 4kg per season. Black currants are notably high in Vitamin C, and can be selectively harvested taking the first ripe fruit and then allowing the whole truss to mature, picking the fruit over a period of time. $15.00

DOVYALIS

A sub tropical apricot. The fruit is produced during much of the warm season at various intervals. The fruit has an intense, sour but rich flavour reminiscent of apricot and tamarind with orange skin and yellow-orange flesh. This soft distinctive apricot flavour makes a wonderful chutney. It can be eaten raw or used in cooking. It grows into a large tree, can handle -3 degree frost. Evergreen. $15.00

ELDERBERRY

ELDERBERRY ‘ADAM” A fast growing, early producers of large bunches of red/black berries, they require high moisture and prefer a fertile soil. Flowers are great for making elderflower lemonade or Champagne. The berries are good to eat and make excellent cordial or wine as well as having medicinal properties. Grows to a height of 2-3 metres. $15.00 LACINIATA – Fern or Cut leaf Elder A delicate fernlike foliage makes this a very attractive plant in the garden with the added benefit of lovely flower heads in spring and berries in the autumn. Elders are favoured for medicinal properties. $15.00

FIGS

All $18.00 each ADRIATIC Late, large round green skinned figs with dark red very sweet pulp. Huge reliable crops of good for dessert, jam, wine and bottling. It is not suitable for Southern districts. These figs were boiled down to make a fig “cake” that was used for sweetening in the days of the early settlers, before “white sugar”. Ripens in April. BROWN TURKEY A heavy producer of large conical shaped fruit that are light amber/pink in colour. The fruit ripens in March-April and has a full rich flavour, enjoy fresh, cook or jam. . MISA

A large late season fig with a short neck, slightly bell shaped with green skin & deep red flesh. It does not appear to carry a breba (early crop) to maturity.

MRS WILLIAMS A sweet fig with dark amber skin and amber to red flesh. Breba crop is in December and the second crop in late February to March. GOOSEBERRY INVICTA

This variety has the RHS award of Garden Merit. The large berries are veined, semi-transparent

green tending to yellow when ripe. Fruit ripen in Dec. Expected yields of these large flavourful fruit at maturity are up to 4kg per bush. The fruit can be used for culinary purposes but also delicious eaten fresh when fully ripe. Resistant to powdery mildew. $18.00

PAX

A more upright variety than invicta & almost thorn less when matures, heavy crops of red berries, showing good disease resistance. Excellent flavour when eaten fresh. $18.00

CAPE GOOSEBERRY – Psydium An herbaceous perennial with highly decorative foliage (frost tender). The fruit are bright orange and fruit over a long season from February until October. They are ideal for children to grow as easy care and the fruit come in its own individual wrapper. $10.00 MYRTLEBERRY – Ugni Molinae Also known as Cranberry and Chilean Guava A neat creeping, evergreen shrub with small leathery leaves that often turns red. The fruit are scarlet red, round in shape and are similar to Cranberries. Fruit taste is sharp but pleasant and they contain a significant proportion of vitamin C. The uses for the cranberry type berry are great and they are a very versatile fruit being used in pies, made into jelly, and eaten raw. Easy to prune, as the natural compact growth requires little more than a light trim to maintain shape. $15.00

PASSIONFRUIT BLACK - Passiflora edulis A large black eating passion fruit, which contains a sweet fragrant pulp that surrounds numerous black seeds. The vines bear fruit after about 15 months and ripen between Feb/march. Passion fruit grow best in a sunny frost-free site protected from cold wind. They need a support such as a trellis. Good drainage is required to avoid root diseases and do best in a loamy soil that has organic matter added. $12.00 TAMARILLO RED Tamarillo’s are subtropical, they need a frost-free, sheltered microclimate. Best eaten raw but great stewed, bottled and frozen or made into chutney and jam. Oval red fruit produced.$12.00 WORCESTORBERRY (Ribes divaricatum) Covered in flowers ready to fruit A deciduous spiny shrub that grows to about 2 metres high. The dark purplish fruit which appear around Christmas time can be eaten raw or cooked. It has the flavour between that of a gooseberry and a blackcurrant. . $15.00

AVOCADO – HASS

A medium sized oval fruit with a thick, blackish, leathery skin, creamy flesh with superb flavour. A prolific cropper from midsummer to autumn. The fruit contain at least 20 essential vitamins and minerals. Plant in a warm sheltered frost free site with good drainage. No pollinator needed $40.00
